UNLABELLED: Piercing has become more and more popular among adolescents. The procedure is generally performed by unqualified professionals and carries its risk. Non-sterilized material or inappropiate hygiene increases the possibility of perichondritis and celulitis. The disease is characterized by erythema of the auricula pinna, unbearable pain and fever. Left untreated, the condition progresses with edema along the auricula and abscess formation that may result in ischemic necrosis and a cauliflower anesthetic deformation. The most common bacteria is Pseudomonas aeruginosa. In cases with abs

Few studies have so far addressed the prevalence and risk factors for contact sensitization in the general adult population; however, many such studies have been conducted in hospitals. We present the prevalence of contact sensitization in a general adult population and its relationship to potential risk factors like smoking, ear piercing and atopic diseases. 1236 adults (44.2% men and 55.8% women) were randomly selected from a cross-section of the population in Sør-Varanger municipality, Norway, and patch tested with TRUE Test (Pharmacia, Hillerød, Denmark). Contact sensitivity to at least 1

Right-sided endocarditis usually involves the tricuspid valve, predominantly in intravenous drug abusers, in patients with anti-arrhythmic devices or central venous lines, and in patients with skin or genitourinary infection and with congenital heart disease 1. We describe a case of a 15-y-old patient, who had tricuspid valve endocarditis in a morphologically normal valve after having his ear pierced, without history of parenteral drug addiction and vascular catheter use. Progression of vegetation size and development of tricuspid valve regurgitation in spite of the intensive antibiotic treatm

We report what is, to our best knowledge, the first case of pyogenic spondylitis following ear piercing, a common and popular cosmetic procedure. The spondylitis was adequately treated with antibiotics and brace. The value of additional diagnostic measures in differentiating between spondylitis and discitis is discussed.

While body piercing has been practiced for many centuries, the popularity of this body art has increased vastly in recent years. It is estimated that up to 51% of college-age individuals in the United States have ear piercing or other forms of piercing or tattoo. Although perceived as a relatively safe practice, medical complications, mostly resulting from bleeding and infections, occur in 17% of all cases after piercing. The case is reported of a patient with native mitral valve endocarditis after tongue piercing, resulting in acute mitral valve insufficiency that required valve replacement.

Keloids are abnormal wound reactions of connective tissue. Auricular keloids can develop as a result of, e.g., otoplasty, ear piercing, or skin trauma. A wide variety of therapeutic options exists, including surgery as primary treatment. Furthermore, there are medical, physical, radiotherapeutic and experimental options. The present paper focuses on the different techniques including the therapeutic outcome and quality rating for each chosen pathway. In addition to the experience of the university hospitals, a thorough review of the literature was performed in order to update and compare today

Keloids are a frequent finding after physical trauma. Keloids of the pinna (helix and antihelix) as a complication of ear-piercing are the most difficult cases. Clinicians have tended to avoid the surgical approach, preferring local conservative treatment with corticosteroids or other treatments. We report use of intrakeloid resection and a form-pressure device to treat pinna keloids and avoid recurrence. The purpose is to maintain the form of the folds of the pinna. The recommendation for this therapy is to maintain the pressure at 24-30 mmHg, and the duration of the form-pressure therapy in

BACKGROUND: Auricular or high helical ear piercing is an increasingly widespread fashion trend that is associated with an increased risk of potentially serious post-piercing complications such as auricular perichondritis.
CASE REPORT: An 11-year-old girl developed severe auricular perichondritis following piercing of the upper helical cartilage of her ear at a hairdressing salon. Four days post piercing, she returned to the same salon for a haircut during which the pierced site was manipulated. She presented to her family physician and was treated unsuccessfully with oral cephalexin. She was

BACKGROUND: The popularity of high ear piercing has led to an increased incidence of perichondritis. Damage to the relatively avascular cartilage will make the ear prone to infection. The literature suggests that a piercing gun, mainly used by jewellers to pierce the lobule, may give excessive cartilaginous damage. Therefore some authors favour the piercing needle, as used in piercing studios. But until now, no comparative histological studies have been performed.
PURPOSE OF STUDY: To evaluate the extent of damage to ear cartilage using different piercing techniques.
METHODS: Twenty-two fres

Earrings are very popular jewelry and ear piercing is performed in very young children. Complications that have been reported in the literature are mainly dermatologic, ranging from embedded foreign body to pressure sores in the post-auricular region. During panoramic radiographic evaluation, precise examination of this area can be used to determine the presence of foreign bodies. In this case, a patient referred to our clinic with panoramic film for an impacted third molar who was not aware of an earring clip impacted in her ear lobe is presented.

Keloid scarring is a benign hyperproliferation of fibrous tissue occurring at a wound healing site. Keloid formation related to the ear is generally the result of ear-piercing, mainly causing cosmetic disfigurement. We present an unusual case of keloid formation at a previous meatoplasty incision scar in a 10-year-old Caucasian with a modified radical mastoid cavity. This lesion prevented the cavity from self-cleaning and obstructed microscopic evaluation of the cavity. Treatment was successfully performed by surgical excision, with closure of the defect using supra-keloid skin flaps, followed

A 68-year-old man presented with 4 firm, flesh-colored, and slightly erythematous nodules located on the superior pole and lobule of each ear. Although reluctant to provide details, it was discovered he had pierced his ears approximately 10 years earlier, and the nodules developed at the sites of the piercings. Keloids were suggested clinically and the lesions were excised. Microscopic examination demonstrated epithelialized tracts surrounded by a granulomatous infiltrate of macrophages, lymphocytes, and plasma cells. Closer examination revealed minute brown-black particles within macrophages.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in healthy blood donors in Thailand
MATERIAL AND METHOD: We performed a case-control study of 435 HCV-seropositive blood donors and 894 HCV-seronegative blood donors as controls. The study was done with direct interview regarding demographic characteristics and risk factors. Odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated by using conditional logistic regression.
RESULTS: The final multivariable model included only the following independent HCVrisk factors: intravenous drug user (IDU) (OR = 61.5; 95%

Two cases of sarcoidal-type allergic contact granuloma due to metals in ear piercing are presented, the first to palladium (Pd) only, and the second to Pd and possibly also to other metals. Both the patients developed papulonodular lesions at the helices following ear piercing, which after 3-4 weeks, became more granulomatous and very resistant to treatment. Indeed, repeated intralesional injections with corticosteroids produced only a temporary regression of the lesions. Biopsies from the persistent granulomatous lesions from the helices in both the patients and the positive test to Pd in cas

Body piercing in young adults is on the rise in western countries and also in Korea. It is usually practised by non-medical persons, and therefore frequently entails local adverse events. Serious complications, such as septic arthritis or infective endocarditis, are occasionally reported, but infective endocarditis in patients with normal cardiac valve is rare. We experienced a case of acute S. aureus endocarditis after ear piercing. Thereafter we studied the status and complications of body piercing in college students of Korea based on a questionnaire survey, and revealed that the rate of ea

Body piercing has become a fashionable trend in western culture. High ear piercing is common among the adolescent population and complications from this procedure although uncommon can be permanently disfiguring. We describe a case of perichondritis after high ear piercing in an adolescent male. A review of the history of body piercing, complications, risk factors, and treatment is presented.

A 52-year-old woman presented with gradual painless enlargement of both earlobes. Indurated plaques were also present elsewhere. There was no evidence of a systemic granulomatous disorder. Histopathology showed foreign material associated with granulomatous inflammation. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive analysis of X-rays demonstrated foreign material composed primarily of copper. Deposition is likely to have been related to corrosion of copper-containing earrings, or from deposition at the time of ear piercing. The presence of clinically similar granulomatous lesions remote

Previous research conducted into the use of the human ear in the field of forensic identification has focused upon the use of grids and manual methods to measure and catalogue the different anatomical features of the ear. To date, few have considered the importance of the presence of ear piercings and their possible role in human identification. This study aims to highlight the common distribution of piercings of both ears in both genders and to explore the effect of piercings on earprints. The presence of a piercing may, in part, help to explain why partial and not whole earprints are sometim

Ear piercing has been widely performed for various reasons, but it may cause hypertrophic scarring and its attendant cosmetic problems and/or subjective symptoms, such as pruritus or pain. Many treatment methods have been applied alone or in combination, including surgical excision, steroid injection, compression, radiation, topical silicone application, and so on. Although each modality or combined therapy has its advantages and disadvantages, in the authors' opinion, compressive therapy combined with surgical excision is the most effective method in many respects. However, the peculiar shape
