OBJECTIVE: Keloids occur commonly after trauma to the skin, with ear piercing being a well-known inciting event. We surveyed 32 patients with keloids resulting from ear piercing, to examine a potential relationship between age of piercing and keloid formation.
METHODS: A total of 32 consecutive patients completed a survey about ear-piercing and keloid formation. Fisher's exact test was used for data analysis.

We sought to determine the prevalence and associated characteristics of hepatitis A, B, C and D viruses and HIV infections in a prison in Durango, Mexico. Sera from 181 inmates were analysed for HAV antibody, hepatitis B core antibody (HBcAb), hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), HCV antibody, HDV antibody, HIV antibody and HCV genotypes. Prevalence of HAV antibody, HBcAb, HBsAg, HCV antibody, HDV antibody and HIV antibody were 99.4, 4.4, 0.0, 10.0, 0.0 and 0.6% respectively. AIMS: To describe a large series of children with anoxic-epileptic seizures (AES)--that is, epileptic seizures induced by syncopes.
METHODS: Retrospective case-note review in a tertiary paediatric neurology unit. For all 27 children seen with a definite diagnosis of AES between 1972 and 2002, a review of clinical histories, videotapes, and EEG/ECG studies was undertaken. Main outcome measures were: age of onset, frequency and type of syncopes; age of onset and frequency of AES; type and duration of induced epileptic seizures; effect of treatment of syncopal and epileptic components.

As body piercing is increasingly en vogue, complications are on the rise as well. Biopsies of such lesions can impose special problems to the reviewing dermatopathologist. We present two patients who developed papulonodular lesions at the sites of ear piercings. Earlobe keloid can form after cosmetic ear piercing, trauma, or burns, and it poses several difficulties in treatment and distinctive cosmetic implications. Granulomatous tissue reactions due to jewelry made of gold, silver, nickel and palladium are rare but nevertheless have been known for a long time. A female patient developed nodular infiltrates after having been pierced with ear stickers containing palladium. A contact allergic reaction could be demonstrated as the underlying cause by inducing similar histological changes following patch testing with palladium.

In Japan, gold dermatitis due to ear piercing increased in the early 1990s, but has subsequently become rare. To evaluate this clinical finding and to determine the frequency of gold allergy in Japan, we analysed the results of patch testing with 0.2% gold chloride from 1990 to 2001. 653 patients were tested from March 1990 to December 2001. 55 patients showed a positive reaction to gold (8.4%). We describe a case of relapsing polychondritis with laryngo-tracheal involvement, occurring after ear piercing in a 39-year-old woman. Polychondritis was clearly time-related to ear piercing.
