Volumetric Assessment of a Soft-Tissue Tumor Using Smartphone Light Detection and Ranging and Neural Radiance Fields: A Single Case.

Accurate volumetric assessment of soft-tissue tumors is essential for surgical planning and outcome monitoring. Although computed tomography (CT) is the standard, it involves radiation exposure and infrastructural dependency. Smartphone-based light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors with neural radiance fields (NeRFs) offer a portable, noninvasive alternative, yet clinical applications remain underexplored. We report the case of a 75-year-old man with a long-standing posterior cervical lipoma. Pre- and postoperative 3-dimensional data were acquired using conventional CT and a smartphone-bas

Patient-reported symptom assessments and early chemotherapy discontinuation in routine gastrointestinal cancer care.

PURPOSE: Early chemotherapy (CTh) discontinuation in gastrointestinal (GI) cancer patients can compromise treatment effectiveness and worsen outcomes. Monitoring and addressing patient-reported symptoms may reduce early discontinuation. Yet, evidence of baseline symptoms routinely collected in standard clinical practice remains limited. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included adult patients with GI cancers who received CTh at Mass General Brigham between 01/2019 and 01/2024. The patient-reported outcome version of the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events assessed 12 sympto

Health Insurance and Trauma Outcomes: The Impact of Coverage on Survival and Recovery in Craniomaxillofacial Injuries.

Introduction Health disparities, particularly those related to insurance status, significantly impact trauma outcomes. Craniomaxillofacial (CMF) trauma patients without insurance often experience worse outcomes due to limited access to care and delayed treatment. This study examines the effects of insurance coverage on outcomes such as length of stay (LOS), survival, and surgical site infections (SSIs) among CMF trauma patients in Puerto Rico. Methods An institutional review board-approved retrospective analysis was conducted on 1,165 CMF trauma patients treated at the Puerto Rico Medical Cent

Investigation of oral bromelain supplementation on the healing of skin flap reconstruction after Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) for non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs).

INTRODUCTION: Non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs) are the most common malignancies and Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) with flap reconstruction is the treatment of choice. This study aims to investigate the effect of bromelain on the healing of skin flaps following MMS for NMSCs. METHODS: In a single-center, parallel-group, single-blinded randomized clinical trial, 60 patients with NMSC who underwent MMS and flap reconstruction were assigned (1:1) to either an intervention group receiving bromelain (1500 mg/day, Rataheal™) for 15 days postoperatively or a control group receiving standard care a

Infantile Myofibroma of Scalp.

Infantile myofibroma (IM) is the most common congenital fibrous tumor of infancy, originating from fibroblasts and myofibroblasts and present at birth in approximately 50%-60% of cases. Solitary IMs most often develop in the head and neck, less frequently on the trunk or extremities, and usually have an excellent prognosis in the absence of visceral involvement. Clinically, IM appears as a painless, firm, bluish-purple, freely mobile nodule and may occasionally show ulceration or skin atrophy, clinically mimicking hemangioma. Imaging typically shows well-defined masses with low-flow or periphe

The Chinese carpet flap for anterior cranial fossa reconstruction in cases of depressed frontal fractures: 10 years' experience at a tertiary referral center.

Frontal sinus fractures account for 5–15% of facial injuries and endanger adjacent vital structures. We retrospectively analyzed 89 depressed frontal sinus fractures reconstructed with a pericranial flap (PCF) harvested in 29 of them at a tertiary center between 2014 and 2024 (MFM.IRB.ID code: R.25.08.3314). Most patients were young men (mean 18.3 ± 4.1 years); mechanisms included falls (42.7%) and motor-vehicle collisions (39.3%). Fracture types were isolated anterior table (n = 54), combined anterior/posterior tables (n = 35), and nasofrontal outflow tract (NFOT) involvement (n = 8). Using a

Multimodality detection of early relapse in radically treated high-risk HPV-negative head and neck squamous cell carcinoma: study protocol for a prospective multicentre UK cohort study (HERD).

INTRODUCTION: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the seventh most common cancer globally, with over 12 000 new cases annually in the UK. Despite aggressive radical treatment, approximately 50% of patients with locally advanced (stage III/IV), human papilloma virus (HPV)-negative disease relapse within 2 years, often in the first year. Although current post-treatment follow-up schedules are recommended by clinical guidelines, imaging surveillance is led by symptoms after the initial 3 months and reliable biomarkers for early relapse are lacking. Consequently, recurrences are frequ

Outpatient surgical management of head and neck keratinocyte cancers in a regional centre: an updated analysis of costs and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Australia has the highest global incidence of keratinocyte cancer. Surgically managing keratinocyte cancers in regional Australia presents geographic and economic challenges, which necessitate cost-effective resource allocation. Previous work has outlined the cost benefit for outpatient day surgical excision of head and neck skin lesions that can be closed primarily. We expand on this analysis with the inclusion of graft and local flap reconstructions. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was completed in a single regional centre across 24 months from July 2022 to June 2024. Patient

How Far Can We Push the Limit in Palliative Surgery? A Case Report of Massive Chondroblastic Osteosarcoma of the Maxilla.

Surgical management of head and neck sarcomas presents significant challenges, particularly in advanced stages where curative options are limited. In such cases, palliative care becomes essential to alleviate symptoms and enhance the patient's quality of life. When chemoradiation therapy fails to provide adequate symptom control, palliative surgery may be a viable option. We report the case of a 24-year-old male diagnosed with an extensive and aggressive maxillary chondroblastic osteosarcoma. Despite multiple chemoradiation regimens, the disease progressed rapidly. Due to the substantial deter
