Complications of one-step button percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy in children.

To assess the complications of one-step button percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (B-PEG) and determine risk factors for developing stomal infections or gastropexy complications. A retrospective study of 679 children who underwent a B-PEG procedure in a single tertiary care center over a 10-year period to December 2020 was conducted. Patient characteristics, early complications (occurring ≤ 7 days after the procedure), late complications (> 7 days after the procedure), and outcomes were collected from medical records. A list of potential risk factors, including age at procedure, prematurity,

CT Fluoroscopy-Guided Percutaneous Gastrostomy in the Palliative Management of Advanced and Relapsed Ovarian Cancer: The Charité Experiences and a Review of the Literature.

Peritoneal carcinomatosis-associated malignant bowel obstruction is a common feature that merits more attention in advanced and recurrent ovarian cancer. Decompressive gastrostomy is one of the most preferred methods to palliate distressing symptoms and maintain patients' quality of life. We retrospectively identified 31 patients with ovarian cancer-associated MBO, who underwent decompressive CT fluoroscopy-guided percutaneous gastrostomy (CT-PG) between September 2015 and April 2023 at our institution. A systematic literature review was conducted for CT-guided gastrostomy in ovarian cancer. P

What to consider for successful administration of oral liquids via enteral feeding tubes? a case study with paediatric ibuprofen suspensions.

Administration of medications via enteral feeding tubes (EFTs) is a common practice for children who cannot swallow properly. Although liquid formulations are the preferred dosage forms for this route of administration, little attention has been paid to the amount of drug that reaches the site of absorption after administration via an EFT. This systematic in vitro study aimed to identify formulation parameters and administration approaches that are critical for successful dose delivery via EFTs. For this purpose, drug recovery after administration of three different paediatric ibuprofen suspen

Management of acute sloughing of the esophageal lining in patients with dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa-A series of six pediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB) is a subtype of an inherited skin disorder characterized by skin and mucosal fragility due to collagen VII (COL7A1) gene mutations. Esophageal strictures leading to chronic dysphagia and acute episodes are well recognized complications within this subtype. Sloughing of esophageal mucosa and the treatment of this emergency have heretofore received limited attention in the EB literature. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical records of the patients who had an acute episode of sloughing of the esophageal lining between 2008

National trends in gastrostomy in older adults between 2014 and 2019 in Japan.

AIM: Previous studies have shown temporal trends in the number of gastrostomies until 2016, but the recent trend is yet to be analyzed. This study aimed to evaluate temporal trends in gastrostomy (mostly percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy) in older adults in Japan in more recent years. METHODS: We extracted data on the numbers of gastrostomies and swallowing function assessment prior to gastrostomy, using the national aggregated open data (NDB Open Data) from 2014 to 2019. RESULTS: Adults in their 80s accounted for the largest portion of gastrostomy during the study period. A decreasing tre

A novel technique for the treatment of radiation-induced acquired esophageal atresia in patients with head and neck cancer.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Dysphagia is a common complaint for patients after radiation therapy for head and neck cancer. Chronic dysphagia ensues when the radiation-induced injury matures into a fibrotic stricture, with the severity of symptoms paralleling the degree of stenosis. Most patients experience progressive dysphagia that prompts medical attention before complete esophageal obliteration. Rarely, patients present late with inability to clear their secretions because of complete obstruction, also termed acquired atresia. These patients represent a challenge and require aggressive and unconve

Case report: Dravet syndrome, feeding difficulties and gastrostomy.

Dravet syndrome (DS) is a developmental and epileptic encephalopathy associated with variants in the voltage-gated sodium channel alpha 1 subunit (SCN1A) gene in around 90% of individuals. The core phenotype is well-recognized, and is characterized by seizure onset in infancy, typically with prolonged febrile seizures, followed by the emergence of multiple seizure types that are frequently drug-resistant, developmental delay, and intellectual disability. Comorbidities are common and include autism spectrum disorder, gait impairment, scoliosis, and sleep disorder. Feeding difficulties and weigh

Anesthetic management of ventricular-peritoneal shunt implantation in osteogenesis imperfecta type IIB: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a rare congenital disorder, has a risk of bone fracture and progressive bone deformity. OI type II is the most serious subtype, and very few reports on its anesthetic management exist. Patients face several anesthetic difficulties, of which easy fracturing of OI-affected bones is critical. Herein, we report our experience with the anesthetic management of a patient with OI type II. PATIENT CONCERNS AND DIAGNOSES: Through genetic testing, a 14-month-old girl (height: 45 cm, weight: 3.9 kg) was diagnosed with OI type IIB due to COL1A gene abnormality.

Jejunal Volvulus Around Gastrostomy Tube: An Exceptional Complication in Cerebral Palsy.

BACKGROUND Cerebral palsy may be accompanied by gastrointestinal disorders. Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube placement is an increasingly performed procedure in these patients. While PEG tube feeding can result in weight gain and a decrease in aspiration episodes, this insertion of a PEG tube is not without complications. Specifically, intestinal volvulus following PEG tube insertion is an exceedingly rare complication. CASE REPORT A 34-year-old man with cerebral palsy was brought to the emergency department with a history of recurrent vomiting. He had a history of PEG tube inser
