BACKGROUND Hemangiomas are relatively common in the head and neck but rarely involve the external auditory canal (EAC). Surgical approaches for EAC hemangiomas vary, and optimal surgical management remains unclear. CASE REPORT We present 2 cases of hemangioma involving the EAC. Case 1 involved a 68-year-old man who presented with a sensation of fullness in the left ear. Case 2 involved a 62-year-old woman who presented with right-ear fullness, hearing loss, and persistent tinnitus. Preoperative assessment included otologic examination, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and corre

A 69-year-old man with acute promyelocytic leukemia in molecular remission and no detectable PML::RARA transcripts in his peripheral blood cells developed acute otitis media. After 10 months, tympanomastoidectomy was performed for suspected secondary cholesteatoma. A histological examination confirmed extramedullary relapse with PML::RARA-positive cell infiltration. The patient achieved a second molecular remission after treatment with arsenic trioxide. Our findings suggest that (1) a diagnostic sample may be obtained from mastoid air cells rather than from the middle ear cavity, (2) molecular

IMPORTANCE: The nasal diverticulum (ND), a blind cutaneous pouch extending from the nasal vestibule (NV), is unique to Equidae. Although anatomical and histological descriptions of the ND are available for horses and donkeys, detailed studies in zebras remain limited.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate and characterize the anatomical and histological features of the ND in zebras and compare these findings with those observed in other species.
METHODS: Silicone casts of the NDs were prepared from two of three female Grant's zebra carcasses for anatomical measurements, followed by dissection for gross

Diphyodonty (the presence of two generations of teeth) characterizes extant mammals and has long been regarded as pivotal to the evolution of other mammalian traits, including precise occlusion and determinate growth. Nevertheless, our understanding of the pattern of dental replacement in Mesozoic mammals is incomplete. Here, we report a nearly complete skeleton of an Early Cretaceous eutriconodontan that is the only mammal to our knowledge that appears to have multiple generations (polyphyodonty) at some loci in the four tooth types. In the auditory apparatus, its ossified Meckel's cartilage

BACKGROUND: Lobular capillary hemangioma (LCH), also known as pyogenic granuloma (PG), is a benign vascular lesion typically associated with minor trauma or irritation, predominantly occurring in the oral cavity and in females. Its sinonasal occurrence, particularly in males, is rare, and an association with remote childhood trauma remains a speculative hypothesis. Clinically, it must be differentiated from other vascular sinonasal lesions such as angiofibroma, hemangioma variants, and malignant mimics.
CASE PRESENTATION: This rare case report descripts a highly unusual case of an inflammator

Cholesteatoma, an abnormal accumulation of keratinized squamous epithelium in the middle ear, occurs as a locally invasive but histologically benign lesion. Its capacity for bone erosion leads to significant complications, including hearing loss, facial nerve paralysis, and intracranial infections. Chronic inflammation is central to its pathogenesis, with proinflammatory mediators like TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 activating signaling pathways, such as NF-κB, JAK/STAT, and MAPK. These pathways contribute to epithelial hyperproliferation and extracellular matrix degradation mediated by Matrix Metallo

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Isolated congenital middle ear malformation (CMEM) contributes significantly to congenital hearing loss and growth problems. This study aims to compare 0.1-mm isotropic ultra-high-resolution CT (U-HRCT) and conventional high-resolution CT (HRCT) for assessing isolated CMEM, using surgical exploration as the standard.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This single-center retrospective study included patients with surgically confirmed isolated CMEM who underwent U-HRCT or HRCT from January 2015 to April 2025. Middle ear abnormalities were identified based on operative outcomes and 4

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: CT imaging of submillimeter middle ear prostheses-vital for postsurgery treatment-requires high spatial resolution. This study evaluated the impact of spatial resolution for the visualization of prostheses using photon-counting detector (PCD) CT, energy-integrating detector (EID) CT, and EID-CT with attenuating comb filters.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-one middle ear prostheses of different makes were placed within a head phantom and scanned on a PCD-CT (NAEOTOM Alpha), 2 dual-source CTs with comb filters (Force and Flash), and a dual-layer CT without comb filter (75

UNLABELLED: In immunocompromised patients, persistent severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection carries the risk of prolonged viral shedding and emergence of new variants. To reproduce the key features of persistent SARS-CoV-2 infection and evaluate its transmissibility, mouse-passaged SARS-CoV-2 was administered intranasally to severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) rats deficient in Rag2 and Il2rg genes. The virus replicated in SCID rats for at least 6 weeks without causing severe symptoms. The main replication sites were the nasal cavity and trachea, and replic

OBJECTIVE: To investigate residual disease in congenital cholesteatoma (CC), focusing on its anatomical distribution, and to explore a risk-stratified surgical hypothesis.
METHODS: In this retrospective review, 72 children (72 ears; age ≤15 years) who underwent surgery for CC between January 2013 and July 2023 were included. The main outcomes were the cumulative incidence of residual disease after the initial surgery, estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method and stratified by Potsic stage, the anatomical distribution of residual cholesteatoma, and risk factors for residual disease.
RESULTS: A

BACKGROUND: The nasal cavity warms and humidifies inspired air to protect the lower respiratory tract. In cystic fibrosis (CF), thickened and dehydrated mucus alters airway surface liquid and may impair these conditioning functions, but the magnitude of these effects remains unknown.
OBJECTIVES: To quantify how mucosal layer thickness and surface dehydration influence intranasal temperature and humidity distributions in a 5-year-old child with CF.
METHODS: A subject-specific nose-to-oropharynx model was generated from MRI data and simulated using large-eddy simulation with coupled heat and w

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare three-dimensional displacements of the maxilla and mandible, and upper airway changes, following tooth-borne rapid palatal expansion (TB-RPE) (Hyrax) and tooth-bone-borne miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (TBB-MARPE). Additionally, the correlation between skeletal movements and upper airway changes was evaluated.
METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of a previous randomized clinical trial (RCT), recruiting patients with transverse maxillary deficiency and allocating them to TB-RPE or TBB-MARPE. Low-dose cone-beam computed tomography images ob

Otitis media with effusion is common in children with cleft palate because of persistent Eustachian tube dysfunction. It can lead to conductive hearing loss, which may affect language development. Regular otologic and audiologic monitoring, tailored to the child's age and level of cooperation, is therefore necessary. Management relies on monitoring combined with supportive measures, including adjustments to the school environment. Depending on the functional impact of the hearing loss, tympanostomy tube insertion, conservative measures, or even hearing aids may be considered. The expected hear

Computational models of the middle ear are typically developed within the linear range of the middle ear's response, which corresponds to typical sounds in daily life. Understanding middle-ear biomechanics under high-intensity sounds is also important for assessing potential auditory damage under adverse conditions. In this study, a finite-element (FE) model of the human middle ear plus the external ear canal is presented, employing a first-order Ogden hyperelastic material formulation and time-domain nonlinear analysis to capture nonlinear deformation of soft tissues and the resulting middle-

The present study describes the gross morphological features and morphometric characteristics of the respiratory apparatus of adult Spur-winged Geese (Plectropterus gambensis), a resident waterfowl species of the Sudano-Sahelian wetlands of Nigeria. Ten ethically obtained adult birds comprising five males and five females were used for this purpose. A standardized gross dissection technique was employed following euthanasia to examine the respiratory viscera. The paired slit-like openings of the nostrils were dorsolateral at the base of the upper beak. The nasal cavity was divided into two equ

BACKGROUND: As part of Uganda's COVID-19 emergency response, two districts along high-volume trucker routes linked to early clusters, Amuru and Tororo, were prioritized for hand hygiene (HH) interventions. While HH is a critical non-pharmaceutical intervention, tools to efficiently identify high-risk community locations during outbreaks are limited.
METHODS: We adapted the Population Connectivity Across Borders (PopCAB) tool, developed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to identify and prioritize high-risk community locations and healthcare facilities (HCF) and inform tar
