Predictors of quality of life in individuals with non-traumatic unilateral transtibial amputation.

PURPOSE: Quality of life is a crucial outcome in evaluating adjustment to prostheses for individuals with non-traumatic lower limb amputation (LLA). This study aimed to identify prostheses-related factors that predict the quality of life in people with non-traumatic, unilateral, transtibial amputation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study surveyed 168 people who have experienced non-traumatic, unilateral, transtibial amputations and use prosthesis. They completed the 12-item short-form (SF-12) health survey and the comprehensive lower limb amputee socket survey (CLASS). We did co

Hearing Aid Amplification Schemes Adjusted to Tinnitus Pitch: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background/Objectives: Hearing aids can be used as a treatment for tinnitus. There are indications that this treatment is most effective when the tinnitus pitch falls in the frequency range of amplification of the hearing aid. Then, the hearing aid provides masking of the tinnitus. Alternatively, it has been suggested that a gap in the amplification around the tinnitus pitch would engage lateral inhibition and thereby reduce the tinnitus. Methods: To test these ideas, we conducted a randomized controlled trial. Patients were fitted with hearing aids using three different amplification schemes:

The"symbiotic"regulation approach in bimodal hearing adults.

PURPOSE: Patients with bimodal auditory stimulation represent an expanding group of cochlear implant users in many countries. The hearing results reported in the literature for subjects with bimodal hearing are controversial and often only evaluate hearing aids that are simply synchronized with their cochlear implant ("synchronized" regulation) and sometimes even adapted independently of the cochlear implant ("classic" regulation). This study aims to verify that the innovative "symbiotic'' regulation of the cochlear implant with an integrated hearing aid and dedicated fitting formula allows to

Exploring the patient experience and perspectives of taking part in outcome measurement during lower limb prosthetic rehabilitation: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Outcome measurement provides clinicians, services and funders with useful information. However, little is known about the experience of participating in outcome measurement during lower limb prosthetic rehabilitation from the patient's perspective. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two participants who underwent lower limb amputation within 5 years, and had experience of taking part in outcome measurement during prosthetic rehabilitation, were recruited from UK limb fitting centers and social media. Data were collected using focus groups and interviews and analysed using reflexive themat

A digital process to replicate the socket-foot alignment in below-knee running specific prostheses.

A well-fitting socket and a fine-tuned foot alignment are crucial elements in a running-specific prosthesis to allow Paralympic athletes with below-knee amputation to express their full competitive potential. For this reason, once a satisfactory socket-foot configuration is established after dynamic alignment, it is fundamental to reproduce the same conditions when constructing the definitive carbon fiber socket, and when renewing or constructing a back-up prosthesis, without dismantling the original. In addition, to cope with emerging needs of the athlete, it would be beneficial to implement

An adaptive prosthetic socket for people with transtibial amputation.

It is essential that people with limb amputation maintain proper prosthetic socket fit to prevent injury. Monitoring and adjusting socket fit, for example by removing the prosthesis to add prosthetic socks, is burdensome and can adversely affect users' function and quality-of-life. This study presents results from take-home testing of a motor-driven adaptive socket that automatically adjusted socket size during walking. A socket fit metric was calculated from inductive sensor measurements of the distance between the elastomeric liner surrounding the residual limb and the socket's inner surface

Prosthetic fitting and mortality after major lower extremity amputation.

BACKGROUND: Studies suggest that ambulation after major lower extremity amputation (LEA) is low and mortality after LEA is high. Successful prosthetic fitting after LEA has a significant quality of life benefit; however, it is unclear if there are benefits in post-LEA mortality. Our objective was to examine a contemporary cohort of patients who underwent LEA and determine if there is an association between fitting for a prosthetic and mortality. METHODS: We reviewed all patients who underwent LEA between 2015 and 2022 at two academic health care systems in a large metropolitan city. The expos

Automated transtibial prosthesis alignment: A systematic review.

This comprehensive systematic review critically analyzes the current progress and challenges in automating transtibial prosthesis alignment. The manual identification of alignment changes in prostheses has been found to lack reliability, necessitating the development of automated processes. Through a rigorous systematic search across major electronic databases, this review includes the highly relevant studies out of an initial pool of 2111 records. The findings highlight the urgent need for automated alignment systems in individuals with transtibial amputation. The selected studies represent c

"A good socket fit can make you or break you": A multimethod study to explore the perceptions and experiences of socket fitting among people with lower-limb loss in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Iterative design and modification are used to manufacture lower limb prosthetic sockets that meet users' needs while also fulfilling safety and mobility criteria. Greater understanding of the expectations of prosthesis users regarding prosthetic fit as well as their experiences at the time of socket fitting is needed. OBJECTIVES: Describe lower limb prosthesis user perceptions and experiences of socket comfort and discomfort during their last fitting and compare this to their expectations for a perfectly fitting socket and their satisfaction with the socket they had fitted. Design, construction, and evaluation of the BeneFit socket: An adjustable temporary socket for a transradial prosthesis.

INTRODUCTION: Upper limb prosthetics aim to restore function and aesthetics of a lost arm and/or hand, which affects a growing population. A "Golden Period," the first month after the amputation, has been identified as the optimal time when a prosthesis should be fitted to amputees to maximize their chances for a fast and successful return to their daily life. This time window is often surpassed because of delays in approvals by health insurance companies and time requirements for producing personally customized and costly sockets. This study aims to develop an adaptable and versatile temporar

Scoring system for diagnosis and pretreatment risk assessment of neuroblastoma using urinary biomarker combinations.

The urinary catecholamine metabolites, homovanillic acid (HVA) and vanillylmandelic acid (VMA), are used for the adjunctive diagnosis of neuroblastomas. We aimed to develop a scoring system for the diagnosis and pretreatment risk assessment of neuroblastoma, incorporating age and other urinary catecholamine metabolite combinations. Urine samples from 227 controls (227 samples) and 68 patients with neuroblastoma (228 samples) were evaluated. First, the catecholamine metabolites vanillactic acid (VLA) and 3-methoxytyramine sulfate (MTS) were identified as urinary marker candidates through compre

A new removable connecting device for MARPE expander with non-common path of insertion.

OBJECTIVES: Maxillary transverse deficiency is a common malocclusion frequently observed in orthodontic clinics. Miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) not only produces greater skeletal expansion but also offers advantages such as simple miniscrew implantation without flap elevation, enhanced patient comfort, and an expanded age range and indications for palatal expansion. However, the fixed connection between the expander and the miniscrews makes the expander difficult to remove, significantly hindering its clinical application. This study aims to employ a non-common path of inse

Denture relining using digital replication method: A dental technique.

The aim of this report was to digitize traditional denture relining using a digital duplication method, in addition to assessing the wear resistance of three-dimensional (3D) printed denture teeth. A complete denture was relined using light body impression. The denture with impression was scanned yielding a standard tessellation language file that was designed to print the denture base and teeth. The printed teeth were fitted into the sockets of the printed denture base and then bonded using auto-polymerized acrylic resins, followed by finishing and polishing. Dentures were inserted and fit an

Ill-fitting prosthesis is associated with an increased risk of elevated blood pressures.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies focused on the benefits of adequate prosthodontic treatment, while few studies have investigated the prosthodontic-related risks to health. As a modifiable oral health indicator, the association of ill-fitting prosthesis (IFP) with hypertension has not been fully explored. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 158,659 adults in Beijing (2009-2017) receiving intra-oral examinations and blood pressure measurements. Logistic regression models were applied to assess the association of IFP with the prevalence of hypertension, systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≧ 140 m

Enhancing music recognition using deep learning-powered source separation technology for cochlear implant users.

Cochlear implant (CI) is currently the vital technological device for assisting deaf patients in hearing sounds and greatly enhances their sound listening appreciation. Unfortunately, it performs poorly for music listening because of the insufficient number of electrodes and inaccurate identification of music features. Therefore, this study applied source separation technology with a self-adjustment function to enhance the music listening benefits for CI users. In the objective analysis method, this study showed that the results of the source-to-distortion, source-to-interference, and source-t
