INTRODUCTION: In France, 4866 cases of tuberculosis were reported in 2023, of which 5.3% involved children. The pediatric population is at higher risk of developing severe forms (miliary or meningeal tuberculosis). The BCG vaccine is effective in protecting young children against these severe forms. It is recommended for a targeted pediatric population, but vaccine coverage remains insufficient. Early prevention through identifying eligible newborns in maternity care could help improve vaccination coverage among high-risk populations.
OBJECTIVE: This study assessed caregivers' knowledge of BC

BACKGROUND: This study was performed to explore the predictive factors for mortality among patients with tuberculosis undergoing directly observed treatment, short-course (DOTS) therapy and to develop a clinically applicable visualization tool for mortality risk prediction.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 9270 patients (8884 survivors and 386 deaths, yielding a mortality rate of 4.16%) from 2014 to 2024, utilizing data from the tuberculosis management information system in Tianjin. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to identify independent risk factors, a nomog

BACKGROUND: Accelerated silicosis is an aggressive form of pneumoconiosis increasingly observed among young artisanal gold miners. In high tuberculosis (TB) burden settings, its diffuse miliary radiological pattern frequently leads to misdiagnosis as miliary TB, resulting in inappropriate management and delayed supportive care.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 24-year-old male artisanal gold miner in Uganda who presented with a five-month history of progressive dyspnea, cachexia, and fevers. A chest radiograph showed a diffuse miliary pattern, leading to a presumptive diagnosis of

Congenital drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) is a rare condition with no standardized treatment. Congenital TB itself is a life-threatening condition. The clinical manifestations can be nonspecific, particularly in preterm infants, which can further reduce diagnostic awareness. We report a case of a 32-week preterm baby with rifampicin-resistant TB. She was born with respiratory distress and early-onset jaundice, initially suspected of sepsis and admitted to the NICU. The infant initially showed clinical improvement at 3 days of life, but at 23 days of life, the clinical condition worsened d

A young woman presented with left hip pain for one week. She had been admitted to another hospital one month prior for right ankle pain and was undergoing treatment for septic arthritis with home IV antibiotics. Imaging of the left hip and right ankle was consistent with septic arthritis, but washout of the left hip and right ankle yielded negative gram stain and bacterial cultures. Due to persistent fevers, further imaging revealed miliary tuberculosis, and AFB testing of the washout fluid from the right ankle eventually resulted positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The patient was placed

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic tuberculosis is a rare entity. Most cases of pancreatic tuberculosis are documented in case reports. There has been no systematic analysis of the imaging characteristics of pancreatic tuberculosis, its association with abutting peripancreatic tuberculous lymphadenopathy, and its likely pathogenesis.
DATA SOURCES: A comprehensive search of pancreatic tuberculosis literature was conducted in MEDLINE, Embase and Scopus from 1978 to 2024. Manual searches of references in the published literature were also performed. The inclusion criteria for eligible cases comprised patien

An 88-year-old woman with back pain was found to have destructive changes at T9/T10 and diffuse micronodular pulmonary opacities suggestive of miliary tuberculosis. At two referring hospitals, six sputum smears and two interferon-gamma release assays were negative. Because the clinical and radiological findings remained highly suggestive of tuberculosis, three additional sputum smears were obtained after admission, leading to rapid microbiological confirmation that avoided the need for invasive diagnostic procedures. This case highlights the importance of maintaining clinical suspicion and rep

Disseminated herpes zoster (DHZ) in immunocompromised patients is uncommon but potentially life-threatening. Pulmonary involvement is particularly rare and can mimic miliary tuberculosis, complicating the diagnosis. We report herein a 51-year-old, male, Japanese patient with a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, and hidradenitis suppurativa in whom DHZ developed five months after he discontinued adalimumab therapy. He presented with a five-day history of fever, abdominal pain, and generalized vesicular eruptions. Chest computed tomography revealed smal

BACKGROUND: Hyper-IgE syndrome (HIES) is a rare primary immunodeficiency disorder distinguished by a triad of eczema, recurrent skin and pulmonary infections, and elevated serum IgE levels. The loss-of-function mutations in signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) result in STAT3-HIES, which is considered the prototype form of HIES. Patients with STAT3-HIES are susceptible to Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans, while Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection is rare, usually accompanied by multiple non-immunologic features including skeletal and connective tissue abnormali

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB), one of the leading infectious causes of mortality worldwide, may disseminate hematogenously and result in extrapulmonary manifestations. Spinal tuberculosis (ST) is an uncommon but serious form of extrapulmonary TB. In addition, TB may predispose patient to opportunistic infections, including Aspergillus species.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 62-year-old man presented with chronic back pain and sudden paraplegia. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of the chest demonstrated findings suggestive of miliary TB, which was supported by a strongly positive purified prot

UNLABELLED: While the COVID-19 pandemic led to important variations in numerous community-acquired bacterial infections, very few data concerning pediatric tuberculosis evolution during this period are available. We aimed to assess the impact of COVID-19 related non-pharmaceuticals interventions (NPI) and their lifting on the epidemiology of active tuberculosis in children in France. We conducted a national, population-based surveillance study in France. All patients under 18 years of age hospitalized for active TB between January 2014 and December 2023 were included. The primary outcome was t

Background and clinical significance: Gestational deciduosis is a benign, progesterone-related ectopic decidual reaction that commonly involves pelvic and peritoneal surfaces and usually regresses after delivery. Although generally asymptomatic, diffuse peritoneal deciduosis may present as multiple nodular implants and closely mimic peritoneal carcinomatosis, mesothelioma, or miliary tuberculosis, creating a challenging intraoperative differential diagnosis. Prompt histopathological assessment is essential to prevent unnecessary staging procedures or oncological treatment. Case presentation: A

Pott's disease, also known as tuberculous spondylodiscitis, accounts for 50% of all forms of skeletal tuberculosis. It is rare in children, especially in low-burden TB countries. We present a case of Pott's disease with miliary tuberculosis in a 22-month-old child. Furthermore, we provide an exploratory literature review of pediatric cases published in PubMed and Scopus between January 2000 and August 2025, including patients aged 0 to 17 years with confirmed or clinically diagnosed tuberculous spondylodiscitis. Sixty-four cases were included. Most cases (81.3%) involved children from highly e

Currently, Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection remains a major epidemiological health problem in developing countries. Although it primarily involves the lungs, this acid-fast bacillus can disseminate through lymphatic and hematogenous routes. Over the past decades, the incidence of tuberculosis has significantly decreased, and vaccination campaigns have protected against severe forms such as meningeal and miliary tuberculosis. However, elderly populations remain vulnerable due to the absence of vaccination in earlier decades and the effects of immunosenescence. Extrapulmonary tuberculo

Miliary tuberculosis is a severe form of disseminated Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection resulting from hematogenous spread of the organism. It is characterized by numerous small nodular lesions throughout the lungs and other organs and can involve multiple systems, including the gastrointestinal tract. The condition is associated with high morbidity and mortality, particularly when diagnosis and treatment are delayed. This case report describes a 31-year-old male who presented to Chino Valley Medical Center on November 11, 2025, with a five-month history of progressive weight loss, intracta

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global health issue, with an estimated 10 million new cases reported in 2019. While pulmonary TB is prevalent, extrapulmonary TB, including hepatic tuberculosis, poses significant challenges, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. Hepatic tuberculosis is rare, constituting about 3% of extrapulmonary TB cases and is often diagnosed in the context of miliary TB. Its diagnosis is complicated by non-specific symptoms and difficulties in differentiating it from other hepatic lesions on imaging.
