OBJECT: To assess the prevalence and the incidence of the anti-HCV and HBV markers in extracorporeal dialysis patients.
METHOD: From 1990 to 1993, every six months, anti-HCV and anti-HBV markers were determined in 88 dialyzed patients, in 24 health workers from the Nephrology and Dialysis Departments and checked with 4143 blood donors. ALT values were also checked monthly.

The documentation was analysed of 123 haemodialysed patients dying in the years 1984-1990 in nine extracorporeal dialysis centres in the Provinces of Bielsko, Czestochowa and Katowice. Among the dying haemodialysed patients were 61 men and 62 women. The mean age of these patients was 43.7 +/- 1.0 years. The mean time from starting the haemodialysis therapy to death was 29.2 +/- 3.9 months. This prospective study evaluated a protocol for hemodialysis without anticoagulation in a diverse group of hospitalized patients in unstable condition with relative contraindications to anticoagulation. The influence of low-sodium dialysate (126 mmol/l) on plasma levels of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and PGF2 alpha, plasma renin activity (PRA) and arterial blood pressure was investigated in 16 patients on maintenance hemodialysis.
