Coercive measures in mental health care can cause considerable stress for those affected. The long-term consequences for mental function have received little attention to date. Here, we present the case of an adolescent user who was frequently subjected to mechanical restraint. From a learning theory perspective, repeated restraint created an association between coercive measures and reducing internal tension that was maladaptive. This case study demonstrates that frequent coercive measures can have a negative impact on emotional regulation.

AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of this paper was to describe and trace the development of the "hysterical character" and the etiology of the concept of hysteria on the basis of the individual editions of Emil Kraepelin's psychiatry textbooks and to discuss the social, methodological and scientific factors influencing it.
METHODOLOGY: The 8 chapters about hysteria in the 1st to the 8th edition of Kraepelin's psychiatry textbook (published from 1883 to 1915) were analyzed, compared and examined for changes and their motivations for change.
RESULTS: In all 8 editions, hysteria was attributed to a pr

BACKGROUND: Pharmacotherapy is recommended as the first-line treatment for adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), yet some individuals show partial or inadequate response associated with adverse effects. These limitations have prompted interest in adjunctive or alternative interventions. Electroencephalography (EEG) neurofeedback is a non-pharmacological intervention for ADHD, which enables self-regulation of neural activity. This systematic review synthesised clinical, cognitive, and electrophysiological outcomes of EEG neurofeedback in adult ADHD, and examined standard versus

The rising number of patients with cognitive impairment underscores the urgent need to explore new protective factors and potential therapeutic approaches. Art therapy, particularly music therapy, is an increasingly prominent field. Music significantly influences brain plasticity, autobiographical memory, and emotional well-being, making it a valuable activity for enhancing cognitive functions. Numerous studies have demonstrated that music improves both specific cognitive domains and the overall cognitive landscape. Listening to music can elevate the expression of genes linked to neuroprotecti

BACKGROUND: The effects of mindfulness on personal development and positive self-related outcomes in learning and professional contexts have been studied extensively. However, the associations of positive psychology instruction with embedded mindfulness exercises with professional calling and self-concept clarity remain underexplored among medical students.
METHODS: The present study examined whether participation in such instruction was associated with changes in professional calling and self-concept clarity among 105 medical students at Shandong Xiehe University. The participants were divid

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence into psychiatric practice poses a profound yet under-examined threat to core clinical faculties. Drawing on 'cognitive debt', this article explores the 'atrophy' of the psychiatric encounter. By collapsing temporality and saturating uncertainty with instant information, artificial intelligence disrupts the capacity to tolerate ambivalence and dwell in the unknown. Referencing Jaspers' 'incomprehensible void' and Laing's 'ontological insecurity', the author argues that the current 'intoxication of immediacy' may recast psychiatrists as executors

Background: Prolonged Exposure (PE) is a first-line treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet its availability remains limited in France. To address this gap, a PE training programme was developed to build capacity among community mental health providers. Objectives: This study aims to examine the implementation of PE, changes in therapists' misconceptions, comfort about PTSD and knowledge regarding exposure therapy following training and to identify predictors of PE use at follow-up in a French sample.Method: Twelve 3-day PE trainings were delivered to a total of N = 200 clinicia

Transgender people often want to modify their voice to better match their gender identity and expression. Gender-affirming voice training can significantly improve their voice satisfaction, mental health, and quality of life, but is often inaccessible. In an NIDCD-funded grant, we therefore developed a novel website (TruVox) that is currently intended for transfeminine people and combines visual-acoustic biofeedback about vocal pitch and resonance with structured exercises. A clinical trial of TruVox was initiated but terminated by NIDCD before completion, and the current paper describes the m

Therapeutic songwriting is a well-established music therapy method, yet its application in specific linguistic contexts remains understudied. Cantonese, a tonal language with six distinct tones that change word meanings based on pitch, presents unique challenges to songwriting processes. Despite its relevance, therapeutic songwriting in Cantonese-speaking contexts has received limited research attention. This study explored therapeutic songwriting practices among Cantonese-speaking music therapists, including their demographic and professional characteristics, practices at key decision points,
