Automatic Detection of Sinus Membrane Thickness Using a Hybrid Deep Learning Model Integrating Multiple Attention Mechanisms.

Background/Objectives: In dental implant surgeries, automatic detection and classification of maxillary sinus membrane thickening from Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) images used for diagnosis and treatment planning, using an artificial intelligence-based system, will both reduce specialists' error rates and enable faster processing. Therefore, in this study, a unique model was developed to automatically detect maxillary sinus membrane thickening from CBCT images. Methods: The first step of the developed model is data preprocessing. Then, feature extraction is performed using the backbone

Over-insertion of orthodontic mini-implants in the maxilla: A systematic review of maxillary sinus, nasal floor and incisive canal perforations.

OBJECTIVE: Orthodontic mini-implants (OMIs) provide skeletal anchorage but may be over-inserted, perforating the maxillary sinus, nasal cavity, or incisive canal. This systematic review evaluated the frequency and consequences of such over-insertion in the maxilla. METHODS: This systematic review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD420261377587) and followed PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Livivo, Cochrane, and Google Scholar were searched for studies reporting prevalence and complications of maxillary OMI over-insertion. Of 98 records, 7 studies were included. Two reviewers independently selected and

Z-classification: an anatomy-based ridge-sinus-zygoma classification and decision funnel for zygomatic implantology.

OBJECTIVES: The rising demand for zygomatic implants (ZIs) in contemporary dental implantology underscores the need for an anatomy-based categorization system and a surgical decision-making panel that takes into account anatomical, biomechanical, and prosthetic factors to determine the final surgical strategy. This article proposes a new Z-Classification, the anatomical division of the maxillo-zygomatic complex. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The classification was developed from the authors' clinical experience of 882 ZIs placed in 234 patients across two centres over a ten-year period. According to

Ectopic Maxillary Third Molar with a Large Odontogenic Keratocyst in Roof of Maxillary Sinus - A Case Report.

Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) are aggressive odontogenic cysts with a high recurrence potential. Maxillary sinus involvement is exceedingly rare, and association with an ectopic third molar located near the sinus roof is rarer still. A 26-year-old female presented with vague midfacial fullness and an unerupted maxillary third molar. Panoramic radiography and CBCT revealed an ectopic 18 near the superior sinus wall enveloped by a well-defined radiolucent lesion of higher soft-tissue density than typical dentigerous cysts. The lesion showed scalloped borders, cortical thinning, and anteroposter

Foreign body-associated maxillary sinus aspergillosis caused by Endomethasone extrusion: diagnostic challenges, biological mechanisms, and surgical management.

Extrusion of endodontic sealers into the maxillary sinus is an uncommon but clinically significant complication, particularly when biologically active zinc oxide-eugenol-based materials are involved. Their persistence within the sinus may impair mucociliary clearance and sustain chronic inflammation. This report describes a 25-year-old woman with persistent unilateral maxillary pain following root canal treatment and subsequent extraction of the involved tooth. Cone-beam computed tomography revealed a well-defined radiopaque foreign body within the maxillary sinus associated with mucosal thick

Ectopic maxillary third molar associated with an odontogenic keratocyst in the maxillary Sinus presenting as refractory unilateral sinonasal symptoms: a case report with implications for early dental diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Ectopic teeth in the maxillary sinus are relatively rare, most commonly seen in the third molars, often accompanied by odontogenic cysts and presenting with symptoms similar to chronic sinusitis, which are easily misdiagnosed or overlooked. CASES: A 24-year-old female patient presented with purulent nasal discharge and recurrent swelling of the right side of the face for 2 years. Despite multiple courses of antibiotic treatment, her symptoms showed little improvement. Clinical examination revealed the absence of the right maxillary third molar. Panoramic x-ray showed a tooth-like

Semi-Automated Segmentation on Computed Tomography Datasets for Three-Dimensional Reconstruction and Volumetric Analysis of the Paranasal Sinuses in Alpacas (Vicugna pacos) and Their Anatomical Variations.

Understanding the anatomy of alpaca (Vicugna pacos) paranasal sinuses is essential for accurate interpretation of diagnostic imaging and surgical planning, especially given the species' susceptibility to dental disease and associated sinusitis. However, detailed anatomical and volumetric data on alpaca sinuses remain limited. This study aimed to characterise the volumetric properties and anatomical composition of the paranasal sinuses in alpacas using semi-automated segmentation of computed tomography datasets, with the goal of supporting clinical practice in veterinary medicine. Seven adult a

Pneumocephalus Without Visible Fracture Preceding Subdural Empyema: A Delayed Emergency Department Diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Subdural empyema is a rare, rapidly progressive intracranial infection that may follow sinusitis, craniofacial trauma, or contiguous facial infection. Early findings may be subtle, and delayed recognition in the emergency department can result in neurologic deterioration. CASE REPORT: A 16-year-old male presented approximately 2 hours after minor blunt frontal trauma after striking his forehead against a car hood. Because he vomited twice, cranial computed tomography (CT) was performed and showed no visible fracture, acute intracranial pathology, or paranasal sinus opacification.

Fatal Presumed Rhino-Orbito-Sinus Mucormycosis in a Child With Fanconi Anemia: A Case Report.

We report the case of a 10-year-old male patient with bone marrow aplasia secondary to Fanconi anemia who was initially admitted for febrile purulent tonsillitis (no throat culture was performed before antibiotic initiation). Despite several courses of broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy, the clinical course was marked by persistent fever and progressive right-sided orbitofacial cellulitis. Imaging revealed extensive involvement of the right maxillary sinus with orbital extension. The appearance of a necrotic black palatal lesion (eschar) in the setting of profound immunosuppression is highly ch

Electrophysiological Properties and Mechanical Sensitivity of Trigeminal Ganglionic Neurons That Innervate the Maxillary Sinus in Mice.

The maxillary sinus is frequently implicated in facial pain syndromes arising from infection, neoplasia, dental procedures, and, importantly, migraine, which can mimic "sinus headache" and contribute to misdiagnosis and inappropriate antibiotic use. Despite the clinical burden of chronic maxillary sinus pain, the sensory neuron subtypes that convey nociceptive and mechanosensory signals from the sinus mucosa remain incompletely defined. In this study, trigeminal ganglion (TG) neurons innervating the maxillary sinus (maxillary sinus TG neurons) were retrogradely labeled with the fluorescent dye
