Emerging Biomaterials for Maxillary Sinus Augmentation: From In Vitro Insights to In Vivo Clinical Translation.

Maxillary sinus augmentation is a key procedure for rehabilitating the atrophic posterior maxilla and enabling predictable implant-supported restorations. Although autogenous bone remains the biological gold standard due to its osteogenic potential, its clinical use has declined because of donor-site morbidity, limited availability, and increased surgical burden. Deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) is currently the most widely used substitute, providing excellent biocompatibility and long-term volumetric stability. However, its inert nature, limited bioactivity, and slow resorption have d

Infraorbital extension of odontogenic infection mimicking dacryocystitis.

Odontogenic infections may occasionally extend superiorly into the infraorbital region, producing periorbital findings that mimic dacryocystitis and complicate diagnosis. A medically compromised woman with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and ischemic cardiomyopathy presented with a 15-day history of progressive right infraorbital swelling initially suggestive of dacryocystitis. Radiographic evaluation demonstrated multiple infected teeth in the maxillary dentition, and clinically, a fluctuant palatal swelling was noted. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed infraorb

Oral surgeons' postoperative follow-up practices after Oroantral communication closure.

INTRODUCTION: Oroantral communication (OAC) is an abnormal passage between the oral cavity and maxillary sinus, most commonly occurring after extraction of posterior maxillary teeth. Untreated defects can lead to chronic sinusitis or progress to an oroantral fistula, complicating oral rehabilitation. Although surgical closure techniques are well described, evidence on postoperative follow-up care is limited. This study assessed oral surgeons' follow-up practices after OAC closure and factors influencing confidence in postoperative management. METHODS: An anonymous online survey was distribute

Maxillary sinus volume and septa morphology in relation to dentition status: a cone-beam computed tomography-based three-dimensional analysis.

BACKGROUND: The maxillary sinus shows considerable anatomical variation influenced by dentition status and craniofacial factors. Understanding these variations is essential for surgical planning and implant dentistry. This study aimed to evaluate maxillary sinus volume and septa morphology in relation to dentition status, age, and sex using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and semi-automated segmentation. METHODS: CBCT scans of 84 patients (168 maxillary sinuses) were retrospectively analyzed. Sinus volumes were measured using ITK-SNAP, while septa presence, location, orientation, and heig

A Case of Extensive Maxillary Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw With Wound Closure Using a Pedicled Buccal Fat Pad.

Reports of extensive medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) with pedicled buccal fat pad wound closure without tissue reconstruction are rare. We present the case of a 78-year-old man with prostate cancer and extensive MRONJ on the left side of the maxilla. The patient was treated with denosumab for the multiple bone marrow and lymph node metastases. Aggressive resection of the infected bone should be considered to prevent the spread of the infection if it extends into the maxillary sinus. In cases of extensive removal of decayed bone, jaw reconstruction is necessary to address th

Radioanatomy of the Silent Sinus Syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Silent sinus syndrome (SSS) arises from negative pressure in the maxillary sinus through occlusion of the ethmoidal infundibulum. Convexity of the surrounding bone towards the lumen and a hypoglobus can occur. It may endanger surrounding structures during endoscopic sinus surgery. This research identifies and quantifies radiological changes in inferoposterior anatomical structures associated with SSS. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series study. SETTING: Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans of 23 patients with SSS who were treated at the University Hospital

Nonsurgical orthodontic treatment of a bilateral scissors bite by bodily tooth movement through the maxillary sinus.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral scissor bite is a rare malocclusion. For adult patients with skeletal disharmonies, orthognathic surgery is usually adopted for correction. Non-surgical orthodontic treatment is more difficult and rarely reported. During orthodontic treatment, it is necessary to reposition malpositioned molars. However, in some patients, excessive pneumatization of the maxillary sinus allows the molar roots to extend into the sinus cavity. This significantly increases the difficulty of moving the molars. CASE PRESENTATION: This case reports an adult patient with transverse maxillary hyper

Impact of Infratemporal Fossa Clearance on Survival in Advanced Buccal Mucosa Cancers.

INTRODUCTION: Buccal mucosa cancers are the most prevalent oral cavity cancers in South Asia, often attributed to widespread tobacco use. The current NCCN guidelines generally advise against primary surgery for locally very advanced (cT4b) buccal cancers involving the masticatory space and infratemporal fossa (ITF). However, some surgeons have adopted an aggressive surgical approach for T4b oral squamous cell carcinoma, involving composite resections and ITF clearance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective analytical survival study of 91 patients with very locally advanced buccal muc
