Improved Response Inhibition Through Cognition-Guided EEG Neurofeedback in Men With Methamphetamine Use Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Impaired response inhibition is the core cognitive deficit in methamphetamine use disorder (MUD), and methamphetamine cue reactivity is a major factor that reduces inhibition efficiency. The authors sought to use cognition-guided neurofeedback to deactivate methamphetamine cue-related brain reactivity patterns in men with MUD to improve their response inhibition. METHODS: A cognition-guided, closed-loop EEG-based neurofeedback protocol was employed. Methamphetamine cue-related brain activity patterns were identified offline using multivariate pattern analysis of EEG data from all c

Exploring Post-Retrieval Strategies to Reduce Drug Craving in Methamphetamine Use Disorders.

Post-retrieval interventions based on memory reconsolidation have shown promise in reducing addiction-related memories. However, research on methamphetamine (MA) use, particularly in humans, remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a post-retrieval intervention paradigm in managing methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) with 46 individuals from a compulsory drug rehabilitation centre. A single-blind design was employed, with participants randomly assigned to one of three groups: (1) retrieval-no intervention, (2) retrieval-extinction and (3) retrieval-cognitive task. The study

Interactive effect of BDNF rs10835210 polymorphism and childhood maltreatment on cognitive functioning in Chinese male patients with methamphetamine use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Patients with methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) are known to experience cognitive dysfunction. Our previous study was the first to demonstrate the negative impact of childhood maltreatment (CM) on cognitive function in MUD patients. Extensive research has highlighted the crucial role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene polymorphisms in cognitive function. However, whether genetic variations in BDNF interact with environmental factors such as CM to influence cognition remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the potential interaction between BDNF gen

DSCnet: detection of drug and alcohol addiction mechanisms based on multi-angle feature learning from the hybrid representation of EEG.

INTRODUCTION: Drug and alcohol addiction impair neurotransmitter systems, leading to severe physiological, psychological, and social issues. Electroencephalography (EEG) is commonly used to analyze addiction mechanisms, but traditional feature extraction methods such as time-frequency analysis, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and Independent Component Analysis (ICA) fail to capture complex relationships between variables. METHODS: This paper proposes DSCnet, a novel neural network model for addiction detection. DSCnet combines embedding layers, skip connections, depthwise separable convol

Running ameliorates methamphetamine-associated cognitive impairment by regulating hippocampal neurogenesis through the GSK3β/β-catenin pathway.

Physical exercise is a non-pharmacological therapy widely used in drug rehabilitation centers for treating methamphetamine (METH) addiction. METH causes cognitive impairment and suppresses adult hippocampal neurogenesis (AHN) in experimental animals. Exercise can improve cognitive dysfunction caused by various factors through the enhancement of AHN. However, little is known about the role of AHN and exercise in METH-induced neurotoxic injury. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether running could ameliorate METH-related cognitive impairment by promoting AHN in a low-dose METH addiction m

Abnormal regional brain activity associated with relapse in early abstinent methamphetamine-dependent individuals.

Methamphetamine (MA) can cause functional abnormalities in the brain. However, the correlations between the abnormal brain activity and relapse in abstinent MA-dependent individuals (MADIs) were still unclear. This study aimed to explore the changes of regional brain activation associated with relapse in early abstinent MADIs, which could provide potential neuroimaging markers for predicting the relapse susceptibility. Twenty-seven individuals who relapsed to MA within 1 year after abstaining from MA, as well as 28 healthy controls (HCs), were enrolled in this study. Resting-state functional m

Decision-Making Signatures of Methamphetamine and Alcohol Use Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Aberrant decision making is a hallmark of substance use disorders (SUDs), often impeding recovery. While uncertainty, which comprises risk and ambiguity, is central to real-world choices, its distinct effects in SUDs remain underexplored. In this study, we disentangle risk and ambiguity to identify context-specific impairments in methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD). METHODS: We used a Choice under Risk and Ambiguity task to examine uncertainty decision making (UDM) in 101 individuals with MUD, 56 individuals with AUD, and their respective healthy cont

Extraordinary canine potential - alternative service domains for working dogs: a review.

Working dogs are professionally trained canines that assist humans in various tasks, with a long-standing history. Their traditional roles primarily include military dogs, police dogs, herding dogs, and guide dogs. With societal progress and the diversification of human needs, working dogs have emerged in roles and applications far beyond the traditional fields they have historically been associated with. This review describes and analyzes these developing roles and explores the scientific basis, outcomes, and trends behind them. Common non-traditional areas of working dog applications include

Micheliolide alleviates oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation-evoked inflammation and ROS production in H9c2 cells.

Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury can lead to substantial cardiac damage and pose a significant threat to human health and survival. Micheliolide (MCL), a sesquiterpene lactone extracted from Michelia (Magnoliaceae), has been reported to exhibit anti-inflammatory, anti-fibrotic and anti-oxidant properties. However, the potential regulatory role of MCL in the progression of myocardial I/R injury remains unclear. In this study, we demonstrated that MCL improved cell viability in H9c2 cells subjected to oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R). Furthermore, MCL treatment signif
