Group Therapy Simulation in PMHNP Education: A Pilot Event.

OBJECTIVE: Growing mental health issues and workforce shortages highlight the need to train competent psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners. Limitations in clinical placements and curriculum demands hinder psychotherapy training and exposure. Educators created a simulation to boost graduate students' exposure to group therapy. METHODS: While simulations improve psychiatric education, costs and staffing needs pose sustainability challenges. To address this, this pilot used volunteer undergraduate nursing students portraying simulated patients in place of paid standardized patients. RE

Hopelessness and suicidal urges in daily life: An ambulatory assessment study in individuals with borderline personality disorder.

Suicidal crises are common among individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD), yet their short-term dynamics remain insufficiently understood. Hopelessness is a key proximal risk factor for suicidal ideation and behavior, but it remains unclear how momentary cognitive hopelessness is linked to acute suicidal urges in everyday life and whether this association is moderated by lifetime severity of rapid-onset suicidal crises sensu acute suicidal affective disturbance. To address these questions, N = 231 treatment-seeking individuals with BPD completed up to 13 smartphone-based assessme

Emotion regulation difficulties in daily life: Assessment, dynamics, and links to stress-affective states and traits.

Emotion regulation difficulties play a major role in general well-being and most psychopathologies, yet their everyday dynamics remain unclear. We adapted the State Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale for ecological momentary assessment and examined how such difficulties unfold in daily life. This entailed how they can be assessed, how they fluctuate over time, and how they are embedded in dynamic stress-affective contexts. In a preregistered study (N = 227; 6 surveys/day for 10 days; collected 2023-2024), adult German participants reported on stressors, affect, and the State Difficulties

Cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression as processes of change in transdiagnostic guided self-help cognitive behavioral therapy for adults with internalizing distress: Disaggregating within- versus between-person variability.

OBJECTIVE: Processes of change in cognitive behavioral therapies (CBTs) remain frequently debated, perhaps due to methodological difficulties in conducting rigorous process research. We investigated two contrasting emotion regulation strategies, cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression, as processes of change in CBT disaggregating within- from between-person changes. METHOD: We examined whether week-to-week changes in cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression (Emotion Regulation Questionnaire) predicted subsequent changes in distress (Kessler-6 Psychological Distress Scale) and

What happens after being not-on-track? Patterns of change, profiles and prediction of at-risk patients.

OBJECTIVES: Clinicians often struggle to accurately identify patients at risk of treatment failure. Feedback-informed treatment offers real-time outcome monitoring to help detect and address potential treatment failures early. This study examined patterns of change among not-on-track (NOT) patients during feedback-informed treatment, explored how patients' characteristics related to these patterns, and assessed the feasibility of predicting them. METHOD: Data from 573 NOT patients in a university outpatient psychotherapy clinic were analyzed. Growth mixture modeling identified distinct change

Twelve-month follow-up of parent-based child anxiety treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) is an efficacious parent-based treatment for child anxiety disorders. Little is known about the maintenance of treatment gains following SPACE, and no comparative follow-up studies have been conducted. We address both gaps by examining child anxiety severity up to 12 months following SPACE and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). We also examine whether reductions in family accommodation of child anxiety are maintained through follow-up in both treatments. METHOD: Participants were 125 mother-child dyads enrolled in a rando

Person-oriented and context-oriented goals in job coaching at the workplace.

PURPOSE: The aim of this job coaching study was to explore and describe goals of coachees (employees with a severe disability) and the companies they were employed in by examining goals, whether these changed from beginning to end, and if these were reached or skipped. METHODS: Sixty-two case files of job coaching were analysed qualitatively. Job coaching is an intervention on the job for employees with severe disabilities. The intervention had a duration of several months, and included training of the person as well as adjustment of the workplace. Goals were formulated by the coach in the be

Stimulation uncertainty reveals distinct mechanisms of sensation seeking and impulsivity.

Sensation-seeking is often described as a tendency to pursue novel and stimulating experiences, yet such options are often uncertain as well. This creates a central ambiguity where choices that appear to reflect attraction to stimulation may instead reflect tolerance of uncertain outcomes, or an interaction between the two. Across two experiments, we tested how expected stimulation and stimulation uncertainty shape reward-guided choice. A reanalysis of a previous operant sensation-seeking dataset suggests that stimulation uncertainty explained behaviour better than expected stimulation. Subseq

Therapeutic alliance and predictive validity of reflective functioning in conjoint mentalization-based treatment for borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Few studies have investigated the therapeutic alliance in treatment of patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD), particularly regarding alliance in group psychotherapy. This study aimed to investigate the development of therapeutic alliance in a 3-year outpatient mentalization-based treatment (MBT) program for BPD combining individual and group psychotherapy, and to examine whether reflective functioning (RF) predicted alliance development. METHOD: Patients with BPD or significant sub-threshold borderline personality pathology were included, with baseline data from 47 pa

Improving Motivation and Treatment Uptake Behaviours of Patients With Eating Disorders Using Patient Narrative Videos: Results of a Pilot Randomised Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Patient narratives are personal stories of affected persons regarding their illness/recovery journeys. This study assessed the potential uses of patient narrative videos to address the current treatment gap in a clinical sample of patients with eating disorders (ED). METHODS: Using a 4-arm randomised controlled pilot trial, n = 91 female patients with an ED watched a (patient) narrative video featuring (1) lived experiences with ED, (2) psychotherapist experiences of ED, (3) lived experiences with a somatic condition, or (4) no video. Main outcomes included treatment motivation an

Treatment- and sham-related improvement and associated factors in non-invasive brain stimulation studies in treatment-resistant schizophrenia: a systematic review and meta-regression analysis.

BACKGROUND: The magnitude and determinants of treatment effects in non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) trials for treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) remain unclear, and sham improvements are suggested to dilute them. We aimed to quantify sham-related improvement, NIBS-related improvement, NIBS-sham differences, and factors associated with each. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of rater-blinded randomized controlled trials comparing NIBS with sham in TRS. Random-effects models estimated pooled standardized mean changes (SMC) from baseline for sham and NIBS arm

Longitudinal associations between plasma oxytocin levels and borderline personality disorder symptoms in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a complex disorder associated with severe interpersonal instability and common relationship problems. Oxytocin has emerged as a candidate neuropeptide, with cross-sectional studies showing reduced levels in individuals with BPD. Longitudinal data - particularly in adolescents - remain scarce, leaving unresolved whether changes in oxytocin reflect treatment effects, developmental processes, or reciprocal influences with symptom trajectories. The present study examines the longitudinal associations of oxytocin and the number of fulfilled crite

Examining the performance of the International Trauma Questionnaire with clinical checks in a multinational European sample.

BACKGROUND: The International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ) is a widely used self-report measure of PTSD and Complex PTSD (CPTSD). 'Clinical checks' - brief follow up questions verifying respondent comprehension of the symptom item - have recently been developed for the ITQ to reduce false-positive diagnostic cases. This study tested whether the ITQ with clinical checks generates psychometrically sound scores and adds clinically relevant information to standard symptom assessment. METHODS: Data (N = 5,070) were collected using quota-based sampling procedures from adults living in five European c

Effect of music on short-term pain perception during peripheral intravenous cannulation.

BACKGROUND: There is no general consensus on which music genre is most effective for a specific condition. The impact of music on subjective pain perception during intravenous cannulation for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan was investigated. METHODS: 204 patients were assigned to one of four groups: listening to Mozart, favorite music, relaxation music, or no music (control). Pain was assessed using the Visual Analogue Scale at four time points. RESULTS: Favorite music significantly reduced pain perception both 30 s and 2 min after puncture while Mozart showed a trend towards reduced

Spatial-numerical associations survive spatial frequency equalization in an adult unimanual SNARC task.

The origins of spatial-numerical associations (SNAs), such as the SNARC (Spatial-Numerical Association of Response Codes) effect, remain debated. The Brain's Asymmetric Frequency Tuning (BAFT) hypothesis recently proposed that non-symbolic SNAs may arise from hemispheric asymmetries in spatial frequency (SF) processing, rather than reflecting a genuine spatial representation of number. Here we examined whether SNAs persist even in adult human cognition when both SF cues and, crucially, bimanual response confounds are eliminated. Participants performed a Go/No-Go non-symbolic magnitude comparis

Dopamine signaling via astrocytic D1 receptors regulates nucleus accumbens synaptic remodeling and cocaine seeking.

D1-type receptor (D1R)-mediated dopaminergic signaling within the nucleus accumbens shell (NAcSh) is essential for forming adaptive circuit changes that embed persistent memories associated with drug seeking and craving. While D1R is expressed in both NAcSh neurons and astrocytes, the specific contribution of astrocytic D1R to drug-related circuit plasticity remains poorly understood. Here, we demonstrated in mouse NAcSh slices that D1R agonists increased astrocytic Ca2+ activity, an effect that was attenuated by astrocyte-specific D1R knockdown. Furthermore, selective knockdown of astrocytic

The sociopolitical dimension of attachment: differences in attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance between East and West Germans.

BACKGROUND: Attachment is a universal, cross-cultural basic need, which, however, is defined, satisfied and shaped differently in each socio-cultural context. Germany with its history of two divided states and their different sociopolitical environments offers an unique opportunity to study their impact on attachment behavior. METHODS: Attachment behavior was assessed in a representative sample (N = 2,328) using the dimensions of attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance in couple relationships of the Experiences in Close Relationships questionnaire (ECR-RD 12). Differences between East and

Intercultural pathways to indigenous mental health: the integration of ayahuasca in community care in the Yaqui intercultural medicine clinic in Sonora, Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous peoples experience substantial mental health and substance use disparities while remaining underserved by conventional healthcare systems. Despite growing evidence for psychedelic-assisted therapies, Indigenous knowledge systems and Indigenous-led models of psychedelic care remain underrepresented. This paper describes the establishment and implementation of the Yaqui Intercultural Medicine Clinic in Sonora, Mexico, an Indigenous-led, community-based program integrating ayahuasca within an intercultural therapeutic framework. METHODS: We present a community case study d

Prevalence and Associations for Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Among Paediatric Cancer Patients in Norway: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

In Norway, 7,400 individuals diagnosed with childhood cancer before the age of 18 are alive today, facing lasting burdens from the disease and its treatment. This study investigates the prevalence of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use among children with cancer in Norway, based on parental reports. It also examines the types of CAM modalities used, their perceived effects, safety, and associated demographic and cancer-related factors. An online cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2021 in collaboration with the Norwegian Children's Cancer Society. The study utilised a modified
