Temporal attentional bias to food stimuli in adolescent anorexia nervosa - an ERP study.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with substantial psychological and physical impairment and low recovery rates. A deeper understanding of its underlying mechanisms is therefore crucial. Cognitive models of eating disorders emphasize the role of attentional biases in the processing of food stimuli. However, only a few studies to date have examined the temporal dynamics of food-related attentional bias in adolescents with AN. METHODS: The present study combined the high temporal resolution of event-related potentials with the behavioral measure of the attentional blink in a rapid

Virtual Reality Therapy Assistants for Adjunctive Cue Exposure Training in the Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorder (VITAACue-AUD): Protocol for a Technical Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is associated with a substantial individual and societal burden. Cue exposure approaches can support treatment by targeting conditioned cue reactivity and high-risk contextual associations. However, routine implementation is limited by therapist time, scalability constraints, and the difficulty of reproducing ecologically valid drinking situations in standard care settings. Virtual reality (VR) and AI have been proposed as promising tools to support scalable and contextually rich interventions in mental health care. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop

The successor representation in high-risk drinking and alcohol-related contexts.

The successor representation (SR) is a reinforcement learning strategy which has been suggested to underlie nuanced forms of habitual behavior, rendering it a candidate mechanism for mental health conditions thought to involve habitual control, such as addiction. However, paradigms used to assess habits in humans cannot detect SR use. Together with the fact that they are usually conducted in disorder-irrelevant contexts, this may explain why the evidence for a hypothesized shift from goal-directed to habitual behavior in addiction is inconsistent. Here, we tested whether individuals with high-

Efficacy of measurement-based care (MBC) in routine child and youth behavioral therapy: A pragmatic randomized controlled trial.

Objective: This pragmatic randomized trial evaluated a low-frequency measurement-based care (MBC) approach in children and youth. Method: In the modified intention-to-treat sample (mITT), 317 children (6-10) and youth (11-17) were randomized to behavioral therapy with or without MBC; 169 completed the trial per protocol (PP). Outcomes were assessed by masked raters, therapists, caregivers, and youth. Results: Average MBC participation ranged from 69% to 87% across informants, while therapists discussed the report at least once in only 29.3% of cases. In the mITT analysis, masked ratings of tot

[Artificial intelligence in the early detection of psychotic disorders: opportunities and limitations of clinical implementation].

Early detection of psychotic disorders is complicated by nonspecific symptoms, heterogeneous trajectories and the limited ability of established clinical instruments to generate accurate individual-level predictions. Data-driven artificial intelligence can integrate complex clinical and biological data and achieves moderate to good predictive performance, which often declines on external validation. Despite substantial methodological advances, a marked translational gap between model development and clinical application persists, mainly due to limited generalizability as well as practical, eth

From gloom to bloom: osmanthus black tea essential oil alleviates anxiety in mice via modulation of the nose-brain axis.

Aromatherapy exerts mood-regulating effects primarily through inhalation, with the nasal microbiota playing a critical yet mechanistically undefined role in the nose-brain axis, especially in anxiety-related neurological disorders. In this study, osmanthus black tea essential oil (OBT) was examined for anxiolytic effects and potential mechanisms linked to the nose-brain axis. Volatile compounds with known anxiolytic properties, such as linalool, limonene, and α-terpineol, were identified in OBT. In a chronic restraint stress-induced anxiety mouse model, OBT inhalation significantly improved an

Tau isoform mapping across tissues and biofluids reveals a signature distinguishing Alzheimer's disease from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Blood phosphorylated tau 217 (p-tau217) accurately detects Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology but is also elevated in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), likely reflecting peripheral (big) tau released from muscle. Assays selectively measuring brain-derived (BD-) tau and BD-p-tau217 are therefore needed. We analysed serum BD-tau and p-tau217 in ALS (n = 139), AD (n = 101) and controls (n = 75) using direct immunoassays and after BD-Tau immunoprecipitation (BD-Tau-IP), and tau species in brain (n = 16), spinal cord (n = 11) and muscle (n = 10) by targeted mass spectrometry. With the direct imm

Management of fragile X-associated tremor ataxia syndrome: a review for clinicians.

Fragile X-associated tremor ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) is a multi-faceted and progressive neurodegenerative disorder that manifests clinically with action tremor, gait ataxia, parkinsonism, peripheral neuropathy, and cognitive and psychiatric features. The disease is highly heterogeneous and there are no FDA approved medications for FXTAS as a specific indication. As such, treatment is symptomatic and must be tailored to the specific needs of a given patient. This review provides expert opinion-based treatment recommendations for the core and ancillary clinical features of FXTAS. Movement disorde

Neurofeedback for Management of Musculoskeletal Pain: A Randomized Control Trial Using DOMS.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic musculoskeletal (MSK) pain is associated with maladaptive neuroplasticity, often reflected in altered alpha activity (8-13 Hz). Neurofeedback may offer a way to modulate this activity, yet most protocols target alpha activity during rest, despite movement being a common pain trigger. This study investigated whether neurofeedback during movement could modulate alpha activity and reduce pain in healthy individuals experiencing induced pain via delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). METHOD: This experiment was a randomized, two-armed, parallel-group trial. Twenty-nine partic

Towards Restoring Dopaminergic Balance in Fibromyalgia: The Untapped Potential of Nonpharmacological Interventions.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic syndrome characterized by widespread pain, cognitive dysfunction, and mood disturbances. Growing evidence suggests that dopaminergic dysregulation may play a role in the pathophysiology of FM, linking reduced dopamine function to altered pain perception, anhedonia, fatigue, and impaired cognition. While pharmacological treatments-such as duloxetine, milnacipran, and pregabalin-may influence dopamine only indirectly, dopaminergic agonists like pramipexole have shown partial efficacy. Nonpharmacological interventions, including exercise, mindfulness, cognitive beha

Vascular endothelial growth factor A induces proliferation of adult neural progenitor cells in non-neurogenic periventricular regions of the adult mouse hindbrain.

BACKGROUND: In addition to the well-established neurogenic niche of the ventricular-subventricular zone (V-SVZ) of the lateral ventricles, neural stem/progenitor cells (NPCs) have been identified in the periventricular regions (PVRs) throughout the adult mouse ventricular system. The potential role of these NPCs in neuroplasticity or neurorestoration, however, remains largely unexplored. OBJECTIVE: Given that vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) has been shown to promote stem cell proliferation in the V-SVZ, this study aimed to investigate VEGF-A effects on NPC proliferation in mid-

Glial-specific polygenic risk and mediterranean diet impact cognitive performance and dementia-related outcomes in the elderly.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) polygenic risk scores (PRS) reflect cumulative genome-wide genetic risk but lack cell-type specificity and functional context. METHODS: We examined the relationships between cell-type-specific ADPRS, domain-specific cognitive performance, and AD or amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) prevalence among elders. Secondary analyses evaluated additive and multiplicative interactions between ADPRS and adherence to Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), a known AD modifiable risk factor. Cross-sectional analyses were performed in a community cohort of 1,172 older ind

Development of a Behavioral Intervention, Increasing HPV Vaccine Uptake-Delivered in Dental Settings (HPV Vaccine Uptake-DDS).

We developed a behavioral intervention designed to address barriers faced by dental practitioners promoting the Human Papillomavirus vaccine to eligible patients. Guided by the Behavior Change Wheel; our approach included a rapid literature review and interviews with dental practitioners to identify and understand these barriers. We then applied the Capability, Opportunity, Motivation and Behavior model and the Theoretical Domains Framework to identify and specify draft intervention functions which were mapped to the Behavior Change Technique Taxonomy. These functions target key barriers, in p

Child Protection Competencies in Medical Education.

Background: Child maltreatment is a major global public health concern with severe physical, psychological, and developmental consequences. Physicians across many medical specialties may encounter affected children, making child protection an important component of medical education. However, many medical students and early-career physicians feel insufficiently prepared to recognize and manage suspected cases. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional online survey using self-developed questions among medical students at the University of Münster (September-November 2025). The survey assessed ex
