Shielding implications on secondary radiation doses in prostate cancer treatment.

Medical linear accelerators (linacs) require a physical structure designed to provide adequate structural support which ensures the safety of patients, operators and the general public. During a radiotherapy session, healthy tissues are exposed to radiation, even with these safety guarantees. This unwanted exposure may increase the likelihood of developing secondary cancer. This work uses the MCNP-5 code to computationally simulate a conformational 3D radiotherapy protocol for prostate cancer. Also, it investigates the potential effects of radiotherapy room shielding composition on equivalent

Hypofractionated radiotherapy in nine dogs with unresectable solitary lung adenocarcinoma.

Although lung lobectomy is the most common treatment option for dogs with solitary lung tumors, surgery often cannot be performed at the time of diagnosis. In this retrospective, case series study, we described the effects of hypofractionated radiotherapy for tumor mass reduction in nine dogs with solitary lung adenocarcinoma that were later considered for surgical resection, and we assessed the tolerability of the radiation protocol. Tumors were deemed unresectable by the attending veterinarian. The dose prescription was 7.0-12.0 Gy/fraction in four to seven fractions, administered weekly for

Hydrogel Nanosensors for Colorimetric Detection and Dosimetry in Proton Beam Radiotherapy.

Proton beam therapy (PBT) is a state-of-the-art radiotherapy treatment approach that uses focused proton beams for tumor ablation. A key advantage of this approach over conventional photon radiotherapy (XRT) is the unique dose deposition characteristic of protons, which results in superior healthy tissue sparing. This results in fewer unwanted side effects and improved outcomes for patients. Currently available dosimeters are intrinsic, complex, and expensive and are not routinely used to determine the dose delivered to the tumor. Here, we report a hydrogel-based plasmonic nanosensor for detec

Global metabolomic responses in urine from atm deficient mice in response to LD50/30 gamma irradiation doses.

Exposures to ionizing radiation (IR) may either be accidental or intentional, for medical purposes or even through terrorist actions. As certain populations emerge to be more radiosensitive than others, it is imperative to assess those individuals and treat them accordingly. To demonstrate the feasibility of rapid identification of such cases, we utilized the highly radiosensitive mouse model Atm-/- in the C57BL/6 background, and evaluated the urinary responses in 8-10 week old male mice at early time points (4, 24, and 72 h) after exposure to their respective LD50/30 doses [4 Gy for Atm-/- ,

Two-stage implant placement technique for the management of irradiated jaws: An animal study.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Radiotherapy results in diminished bone remodeling capacity and an elevated risk of osteoradionecrosis, which can negatively influence the survival rate of dental implants. Patients receiving radiotherapy are advised not to receive dental implants during or soon after completing their radiotherapy. PURPOSE: The purpose of this animal study was to investigate a 2-stage implant placement technique designed to diminish applied trauma on irradiated bone. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two groups of white New Zealand rabbits received radiotherapy in ascending doses (2, 4, 8 Gy), whil

A branching process model of heterogeneous DNA damages caused by radiotherapy in in vitro cell cultures.

This paper deals with the dynamic modeling and simulation of cell damage heterogeneity and associated mutant cell phenotypes in the therapeutic responses of cancer cell populations submitted to a radiotherapy session during in vitro assays. Each cell is described by a finite number of phenotypic states with possible transitions between them. The population dynamics is then given by an age-dependent multi-type branching process. From this representation, we obtain formulas for the average size of the global survival population as well as the one of subpopulations associated with 10 mutation phe

Vascular Complications After Radiotherapy in Head and Neck Free Flap Reconstruction: Clinical Outcome Related to Vascular Biology.

Radiotherapy as a risk factor for free flap failure has been widely debated. The purpose of this study was to investigate vascular complications in free flap surgery at a center advocating preoperative radiotherapy. On the basis of previous experimental studies, we also aimed to investigate temporal aspects of vascular complications in both arteries and veins. Furthermore, we aimed to study the effect of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), because irradiated microvascular recipient vessels are associated with impaired fibrinolysis.A retrospective review was conducted for 344 consecutive head a

Enterobius vermicularis infection of the liver in a patient with colorectal carcinoma with suspected liver metastasis.

A 68-year-old man diagnosed with cT3N2 adenocarcinoma of the rectum presented with a synchronous solitary liver metastasis on CT scan. Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy was started to downstage the primary tumour. Resection of the rectal tumour followed 3 months after the last radiotherapy session and primary resection of the isolated liver lesion was performed in the intervening period. Histopathological assessment of the liver lesion, however, showed no malignancy, but did reveal a necrotic infection due to Enterobius vermicularis. This parasite is frequently found in the intestines, but only ra

Evaluating the attendance of medical staff and room occupancy during palliative radiotherapy.

INTRODUCTION: Attendance of staff and use of resources during treatment have an impact on costs. For palliative radiotherapy, no reliable data are available on the subject. Therefore, the measurement of selected variables (staff absorbance and room occupancy) based on daily palliative irradiation was the aim of our prospective study. The analysis is part of a larger study conducted by the German Society of Radiation Oncology (DEGRO). PATIENTS, MATERIAL, AND METHODS: A total of 172 palliative radiation treatments were followed up prospectively between October 2009 and March 2010. The study was

Phototherapy 660 nm for the prevention of radiodermatitis in breast cancer patients receiving radiation therapy: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Breast neoplasms are the second most common type of cancer worldwide, and radiation therapy is a key component of their treatment. Acute skin reactions are one of the most common side effects of radiation therapy, and prevention of this adverse event has been investigated in several studies. However, a clinically applicable, preventative treatment remains unavailable. It has been demonstrated that application of a low-power laser can promote tissue repair. Therefore, the aim of this trial is to evaluate the effectiveness of an indium gallium aluminum phosphorus (InGaAIP) laser oper
