Hyperthermia is a totally different modality from existing treatment modalities. Between June 1982 and March 1983, 11 patients with aggressive recurrent respiratory papillomatosis were treated with alpha or human leukocyte interferon (IFN) that was produced by and purchased from the New York Blood Center, Inc. Hyperthermia is selectively toxic to neoplastic tissue. Since August 1981, 357 patients with incurable tumors in various body areas have been treated with chemotherapy and radiofrequency hyperthermia (RFHT) with adjuvant metronidazole at this center. 20 patients with myasthenia gravis (MG), refractory to anticholinesterase and steroid therapy, underwent plasma exchange therapy combined with immunosuppressive drugs and lymphocytapheresis. In 7 patients with bone and soft tissue sarcoma super-selective angiography with chemotherapy was performed. Both showed a low rate of complications. In 2 patients we saw a total and in 3 a subtotal tumor-regression. A residual tumor was eliminated after systemic chemotherapy. Beside the tumor vessels treated in the first session, we found other initially unimportant ones. These showed increased size during subsequent angiography and allowed further injection of chemotherapeutic agent into the residues of the tumor. We found that each part of the tumor has its own separate blood supply.

The cytoplasmic glucocorticoid-receptor (GR) content was analyzed in peripheral leukocytes from 52 nonselected patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Fourteen patients with aggressive juvenile papillomatosis were treated with systemic administration of alpha-type interferon (IFN). Sequential half-body irradiation (HBI) to be delivered in two sessions was used in 18 consecutive patients with metastatic Ewing sarcoma who relapsed after radiotherapy and multidrug chemotherapy. Thirteen patients with inoperable squamous cell lung cancer were treated by a protocol combining multiple chemotherapy with radiotherapy.
