Exoscope-Associated Upper-Limb Rather than Neck Postural Changes During Frontal Sinus Procedures in Bifrontal Craniotomies.

Objectives: Exoscopes decouple viewing from eyepieces and may improve surgeon ergonomics. We compared upper-limb and neck posture during microscope- and exoscope-assisted frontal sinus procedures in bifrontal craniotomies. Methods: Five surgical cases involving five surgeons yielded 12 paired microscope-exoscope posture observations. Eight pairs from four cases met image-selection criteria and underwent angular measurement using ImageJ version 1.54g and RULA-inspired partial postural assessment. Results: Upper arm elevation decreased from 67.3 ± 6.9° under the microscope to 53.5 ± 5.2° under t

3D Imaging of the Comparative Anatomical Structure of the Ossa Cranii in Some Ruminants.

Three-dimensional comparative descriptions of the ossa cranii across representatives of the Camelidae, Giraffidae, and Bovidae remain limited despite their relevance to comparative veterinary anatomy and clinical practice. Given the distinct structural variations and functional adaptations of these families, a descriptive comparison of ossa cranii morphology is needed to advance anatomical knowledge and establish species-specific reference data. This study compared the principal ossa cranii of camel, giraffe, cattle, sheep, and goat to identify conserved anatomical features and species-specifi

Morphometric Characterization of Frontal Sinus and Outflow Tract Anatomy: Implications for Surgical Planning.

Introduction The frontal sinus and its outflow tract are integral to sinonasal physiology and play a key role in the development of chronic rhinosinusitis. Their complex anatomy often poses challenges in endoscopic sinus surgery. This study aimed to provide a morphometric characterization of the frontal sinus and its drainage patterns to support safer and more effective surgical planning. Methodology A descriptive cross-sectional cadaveric study was conducted on 30 hemisections derived from 15 formalin-fixed cadaveric head and neck specimens at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIM

Efficacy of Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Preventing Infections Following Frontal Sinus Fracture Management: A Retrospective Analysis.

Frontal sinus fractures (FSF) can lead to detrimental intracranial infections, yet there is variability in the literature regarding the efficacy of antibiotic prophylaxis. This study aims to provide guidance on the role of prophylactic antibiotics in mitigating infection following FSF. A retrospective cohort study was conducted from January 2018 to December 2022 comparing the incidence of infection between patients managed with versus without antibiotics. Patients with FSF diagnosed by CT scan and at least 18 years old were included. Our primary outcome was the incidence of infection following

A case of a paranasal sinus mucocele of the frontal sinus invading the anterior cranial fossa and orbital wall.

This report details a rare case of a frontal-ethmoid sinus mucocele with concurrent invasion of both anterior cranial fossa and orbital wall, manifesting primarily with ophthalmologic symptoms. A 64-year-old woman presented with right periorbital swelling accompanied with mild pain, photophobia, and epiphora. Endoscopic sinus surgery revealed extensive destruction of the skull base bone. Intraoperative findings included an intact dura mater without cerebrospinal fluid leakage. Histopathology identified a benign mucocele lined by respiratory epithelium. This case represents an exceptional prese

Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance, Cross-Sectional Anatomy, and 3D Volume Rendering of the Nasal Cavity and Paranasal Sinuses of the Alpaca (Vicugna pacos).

Understanding the anatomy of the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity in alpacas (Vicugna pacos) is limited by scarce published data. This prospective cadaveric study aimed to enhance the interpretation of clinical cross-sectional imaging and expand knowledge of normal anatomy using computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), macroscopic cross-sections, and 3D reconstructions (Amira v5.3.3; Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waltham, MA, USA). Seven alpacas (median age 3.9 years; five males, two females) underwent CT and MRI. Frozen anatomical slices were obtained from three heads, and si

Case Report: Nasal acinic cell carcinoma in a cat: clinicopathological and immunohistochemical characterization of a rare neoplasm.

Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) is a malignant epithelial neoplasm characterized by serous acinar differentiation and is most described in the salivary glands of humans and domestic animals. In animals, ACC is rare and its occurrence in the nasal cavity of cats is exceptionally uncommon. This case describes the clinical presentation, gross pathological findings, histological features and immunohistochemical profile of a nasal acinic cell carcinoma in a 14-year-old domestic shorthair cat. The animal showed chronic unilateral nasal discharge and epiphora. Bacteriological culture of nasal secretions

Pneumosinus dilatans frontalis: a cause of headaches mimicking chronic sinusitis-a case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Pneumosinus dilatans (PD) is a rare condition characterized by abnormal enlargement of one or more paranasal sinuses without changes to the sinus walls, with the frontal sinuses (pneumosinus dilatans frontalis) being the most commonly affected. To our knowledge, descriptions of pneumosinus dilatans frontalis (PDF) are limited to a cluster of cases, which restricts the development of appropriate diagnostic and management strategies. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 23-year-old Ethiopian man who has been experiencing intermittent nasal obstruction and headache localized to

Osteoplastic Flap to Approach Frontal Sinus Diseases.

The osteoplastic flap (OPF) is a classic surgical technique that provides direct access to the frontal sinus and remains relevant despite advancements in endoscopic approaches. Originally described by Schönborn in 1894 and popularized in the mid-20th century by Montgomery and colleagues, OPF demonstrated high success rates in managing complex frontal sinus pathologies. OPF is indicated in refractory chronic frontal sinusitis, extensive mucoceles, benign and malignant neoplasms, complex frontal trauma, and cases requiring cranialization or combined neurosurgical access. Absolute contraindicatio

Frontal Sinus Diseases Followed by Untreated Medial Blow-Out Fractures.

Blow-out fracture (BOF) is a common orbital wall fracture caused by blunt trauma. Surgical repair is generally indicated in patients with significant enophthalmos or diplopia, whereas small fractures are often managed conservatively. Herein, the authors present 2 cases of frontal sinus disease arising in patients with untreated BOF. These cases highlight the importance of considering BOF not only as an ophthalmic concern but also as a potential cause of sinonasal complications. Timely surgical intervention and close otolaryngologic follow-up are recommended to prevent delayed sequelae such as

Frontal pneumosinus dilatans as a cause of delayed post-traumatic proptosis in a patient with chronic facial nerve palsy.

Pneumosinus dilatans (PSD) is a rare expansile disorder characterized by enlargement of an aerated paranasal sinus beyond its normal anatomic boundaries while preserving bony integrity. We report a 26-year-old man with progressive unilateral proptosis presenting 18 years after severe craniofacial trauma complicated by permanent sixth and seventh cranial nerve palsies. Examination demonstrated 5 mm axial left proptosis with paralytic lagophthalmos, lower eyelid retraction, and exposure keratopathy. Computed tomography revealed marked left frontal sinus enlargement (62.7% volumetric increase) wi

Frontal Cholesterol Granuloma in a Pediatric Patient: A Case Report.

Cholesterol granuloma (CG) is a benign expansile lesion caused by the breakdown of blood products and subsequent granulomatous reaction, most often found in pneumatized bones. Frontal sinus involvement is exceedingly rare, especially in children, and may mimic mucoceles, abscesses, or fungal disease on imaging. We present a 16-year-old male with a painful, progressively enlarging frontal swelling and headache. MRI revealed a lobulated lesion hyperintense on both T1- and T2-weighted sequences with peripheral enhancement, initially suggesting an abscess-like process. CT showed an expansile lytic

A prognostic model based on seven cell adhesion molecule-related genes to predict the prognosis of colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is useful to assess exocrine pancreatic function by combining rapid imaging acquisition with the administration of secretin, a gastrointestinal hormone that stimulates the secretion of bile and pancreatic juice. However, extensive data on this method are lacking. This study aimed to determine whether MRCP with secretin administration is able to simultaneously detect alterations of both the pancreatic ducts and exocrine pancreatic function. METHODS: All subjects older than 18 years who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and

cGAS‑STING pathway in digestive tract cancer: From molecular mechanisms to therapeutic applications (Review).

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic lymphoplasmacytic rhinitis (LPR) is a common inflammatory disorder of the nasal cavity in dogs due to unknown etiology. It is characterised by non-specific clinical signs, including nasal discharge, epistaxis and breathing problems. Diagnosis is usually based on the histopathologic identification of infiltrating plasmocytes and lymphocytes in the nasal mucosa and the exclusion of other underlying diseases. Treatment strategies include glucocorticoids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics and antifungal medications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the

Sinonasal Nocardia farcinica in a cat with comorbidities.

A 15-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was referred because of a chronic history of swelling over the right eye that had progressed to an open, exudative wound. The lesion had not responded to prolonged antimicrobial treatments that were chosen based on superficial culture results. Before this development, the cat had been diagnosed with International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) stage 2 chronic kidney disease with no other significant health issues. Computed tomography revealed fluid to soft-tissue attenuating material in the sinonasal cavities and concurrent bony lysis. Cytology

Adapting the Daily Inventory of Stressful Events for SMS Delivery: Recommendations for Research.

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a chronic and potentially sight-threatening disease. Topical corticosteroids (Cs) seem to be the only effective treatment for this condition, although severe side effects may occur owing to their prolonged use. More recently, cyclosporine (Cyc) eye drops have been reported as a valid alternative, but so far such treatment has only been successfully experimented for a short time and in small numbers of patients. The aim of our study is to evaluate the long term safety and efficacy of topical cyclosporine eye drops in children suffering from VKC. Over a perio
