Subunit-Based Reconstruction of a Composite Upper Lip Defect After Dog Bite Using a Mucosal V-Y Advancement Flap and Nasolabial Fold Rotational Flap.

Dog bite injuries involving the lips require careful reconstruction to restore both function and aesthetics. We report a case of a 64-year-old man with a composite defect of the upper lip after a dog bite. The defect involved the vermilion and extended to the adjacent cutaneous portion of the philtral column. Reconstruction was performed using a mucosal V-Y advancement flap for vermilionplasty and a nasolabial fold rotational flap for coverage of the cutaneous upper lip. This subunit-based approach restored both vermilion and cutaneous subunits using adjacent like-with-like tissue, resulting i

A review of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels for orthopedic applications.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a synthetic polymer that is increasingly being used in biomedical applications due to its biocompatibility, aqueous solubility, low toxicity, and tissue-mimicking properties. The physiochemical properties of PVA hydrogels are widely tunable and allow for a diverse range of tissue-specific applications and delivery methods. In this review, we evaluate the published information on the history of PVA with respect to its safety and efficacy as a biomedical device for orthopedic applications in articular cartilage, fibrocartilage, and intervertebral disc prosthesis. The r

Mechanical significance of power-law tapering in biological puncture structures.

Numerous biological taxa have evolved puncturing tools, such as teeth, claws, and spines, for penetration, predation, and defense. Despite differences in material composition and size, these tools exhibit remarkably similar power-law relationships between diameter and distance from the tip. Although the influence of power-law tapering on tool strength has been extensively investigated, its influence on deep puncture mechanics remains poorly understood. Here, we systematically examine the role of power-law conical geometry in puncture performance through combined theoretical and experimental an

Pathology of coral growth anomalies in the Maldives: insights from Acropora, Montipora, and Pachyseris.

Coral growth anomalies (GAs) are chronic skeletal lesions that alter coral morphology and functionality, yet their etiology remains poorly understood, particularly in understudied regions such as the Maldives. This study provides the first comprehensive pathological description of 15 GAs from the Maldivian Archipelago across 3 coral genera, Acropora, Montipora, and Pachyseris, with the last still lacking a histopathological characterization to date. Despite varying gross morphologies (either bosselated, umbonate, nodular, or fimbriated masses), all lesions microscopically exhibited basal body

Differentiation of Lipedema Nodules and Angiolipomas Based on the Ultrasound and Histopathologic Findings: A Case Series.

Hyperechoic subcutaneous nodules in lipedema may mimic angiolipomas but represent an inflammatory and hypoxic-ischemic process rather than a neoplasia, despite tissue expansion. As the painful nodules expand, biopsy is recommended to exclude cancer. In this context, ultrasound (US) has become a pivotal tool for diagnosing and managing these nodules when combined with histopathologic assessment. However, many professionals in the field still have limited knowledge of this topic. In the present case series, the US and histopathologic findings of hyperechoic nodules in two patients with lipedema

Enhanced axonal mitochondrial motility and neural activity-induced energy deficits destabilize synaptic transmission in models of bipolar disorder.

Synaptic communication requires mitochondria to supply ATP and buffer calcium at presynaptic terminals. In bipolar disorder, manic episodes are associated with elevated mood and neural activity, but the underlying cellular mechanisms remain unclear. Here we show that hiPSC-derived cortical neurons from donors with bipolar disorder exhibit increased axonal mitochondrial motility and frequent mitochondrial entry-exit transitions, reducing stable mitochondrial retention at presynaptic terminals. This destabilizes local ATP maintenance and calcium buffering, increasing synaptic variability without

Mechanically adaptive dual-crosslinked hydrogel integrated with metal-phenolic cell backpacks for active keloid therapy.

Keloids are invasive, highly recurrent fibroproliferative disorders. Clinical samples reveal a pathological pattern characterized by dysregulated extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling, reduced NK-cell infiltration, and elevated TGF-β1. Current monotherapies have limited efficacy, and local delivery systems fail to achieve deep penetration and sustained effects due to the dense ECM barrier. To address these, we propose an active strategy of mechanically adaptive carrier delivering functionalized immune cells and develop a pH-responsive dual-crosslinked hydrogel (OR-Mg@NK@Gel) with oxyresveratro

Wogonin targets GATA1 to induce ferroptosis and potentiate cisplatin-mediated anti-tumor effects in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a highly aggressive malignancy with a dismal prognosis, mainly due to cisplatin resistance and severe adverse effects of conventional therapies. Wogonin, a natural flavonoid, exhibits anticancer activity in several cancers, but its efficacy and potential molecular mechanisms in ESCC remain unclear. PURPOSE: Our study aimed to investigate the anticancer effect of wogonin in ESCC and elucidate its molecular mechanism, with a particular focus on ferroptosis regulation and synergy with cisplatin. METHODS: A series of experiments were condu

Human and zebrafish cross-species comparison on ligand affinity towards the aryl hydrocarbon receptor and Keap1 oxidative stress sensor: a molecular docking dataset.

Bioanalytical methods targeting adverse cellular outcomes are increasingly used in environmental toxicology, including receptor-mediated toxicity pathways relevant to high-throughput monitoring of drinking water, wastewater, and other environmental samples. However, despite their increasing regulatory acceptance, the representativeness of human tissue-derived bioassays for assessing toxicity toward aquatic species remains uncertain. Given these circumstances, this data article presents molecular docking and sequence-alignment datasets generated to compare human and zebrafish receptor/sensor va

Outcomes of Kidney Transplants From Donors With Stage 3 Acute Kidney Injury Requiring Dialysis: A National Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Whether severe donor acute kidney injury (AKI) requiring dialysis affects posttransplant outcomes remains debated and may influence center-level acceptance decisions. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study of United States deceased-donor kidney transplants (2015-2020) used OPTN data with follow-up through September 2024. Donor AKI was staged by KDIGO 2012 criteria, and dialysis was identified using a validated rule-based natural language processing (NLP) algorithm applied to DonorNet records. The primary outcome was all-cause graft failure (ACGF). Secondary outcomes included del

The impact of collagenase clostridium histolyticum (CCH) priming on surgical outcomes in Peyronie's disease: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Peyronie's disease (PD) is a connective tissue disorder characterized by fibrous plaque formation within the tunica albuginea, resulting in penile curvature, pain, and sexual dysfunction. Although collagenase clostridium histolyticum (CCH) injections are an established nonsurgical therapy, surgical correction remains the gold standard for men with severe deformity or persistent functional impairment. The influence of prior CCH exposure ("CCH priming") on subsequent need for surgical correction and specific surgical outcomes remains incompletely understood. Our aims were to quantify

Context-Dependent PrPᶜ Signaling in Cancer Stemness, Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Repair, and Extracellular Vesicle Biology.

Cellular prion protein (PrPᶜ), encoded by PRNP, is increasingly recognized as a context-dependent regulator of cellular stress adaptation and intercellular communication beyond its canonical role as the physiological precursor of disease-associated prion conformers. Through its localization in membrane microdomains and interactions with receptors, adhesion molecules, chaperones, and extracellular vesicles (EVs), PrPᶜ has been linked to redox and mitochondrial homeostasis, survival signaling, senescence regulation, and tissue repair. However, these functions are neither uniformly pathogenic nor

TCF4-driven cathepsin S promotes papillary thyroid carcinoma via PI3K/AKT/mTOR.

Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) usually has a good prognosis, but a subset of patients develops lymph node metastasis, radioiodine resistance and recurrence, and lacks effective molecular biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Cathepsin S (CTSS), a lysosomal cysteine protease, has been implicated in several malignancies, yet its role and regulation in PTC remain unclear. We integrated GEO and TCGA-THCA datasets with eQTL-based genetic instrument analyses to screen PTC-related genes and evaluate their association with clinicopathological features and DFS. CTSS expression was examined in clinical

Oral Rehabilitation of Severely Atrophic Alveolar Ridge Using Sinus Augmentation and Ridge Split Technique: A Case Report.

Dental implant placement requires adequate bone volume. Sinus augmentation and ridge split technique enhance bone volume in a severely atrophied alveolar ridge. This case report describes the rehabilitation of a patient with severe posterior maxillary atrophy (residual bone height <2.5 mm) and a knife-edge posterior mandibular ridge using lateral sinus floor elevation and ridge split technique, respectively, followed by implant placement. Given the limited high-level evidence on the combined management of these complex anatomical deficiencies and their long-term implant outcomes, this report h
