Identification of rare blood group donors from biobank data.

Safe blood transfusion relies on avoiding clinically significant incompatibilities between recipient antibodies and donor red blood cell antigens, a requirement that becomes particularly challenging for patients with rare blood group phenotypes, especially when alloimmunized. Conventional approaches to identifying rare blood group donors rely on targeted screening and laborious laboratory studies, which are limited by resource constraints and insufficient population diversity. The aim of this study was to enhance the identification of rare blood group donors in Finland by utilizing genome-wide

Clinical Performance of the Elecsys HCV Duo Immunoassay Compared with a Standard-of-Care Algorithm Using Alinity Anti-HCV Screening and HCV RNA Confirmation.

Background/Objectives: The Elecsys HCV Duo immunoassay simultaneously detects HCV core antigen (HCV Ag) and anti-HCV antibodies in a single sample. We evaluated its clinical performance against a standard-of-care reference algorithm of anti-HCV antibody and HCV RNA testing. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 1332 residual serum or plasma samples tested with reference HCV RNA assays and the Alinity i Anti-HCV assay. Samples were classified as reference-positive, indicating current or past HCV infection (n = 166; 88 RNA+/Ab+ with active infection and 78 RNA-/Ab+ with resolved or treated infect

Blood Donor Deferral Patterns at a Tertiary Care Hospital in Central India: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Study.

Background and aim Blood donor deferral is an essential safeguard for donors and recipients, but it also reduces the immediately available donor pool. Because deferral patterns reflect local demographics, health conditions, and screening practices, center-level data are important for donor recruitment and retention planning. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency, pattern, and causes of blood donor deferral among prospective donation presentations at a tertiary care teaching hospital in Central India. Methods A retrospective, record-based cross-sectional study was conducted at the

Longitudinal pre-diagnostic blood samples predict osteoporosis risk.

Cross-sectional biomarker discovery studies for degenerative diseases are limited by selection bias, post-diagnostic confounding, and high biological variability. Repeated pre-diagnostic sampling can address these limitations. We analyzed 538 plasma metabolomic profiles (1-6 samples per participant, yearly intervals) from 99 pre-diagnostic osteoporosis cases and 99 matched controls in the Danish Blood Donor Study. We compared performance of cross-sectional and longitudinal modeling using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) logistic regression and random forest. Longitudinal

Canine leishmaniosis in a low-but-non-zero risk setting: A practice-oriented review from Hungary.

Canine leishmaniosis (CanL) caused by Leishmania infantum is traditionally endemic in the Mediterranean basin; however, imported infections and sporadic autochthonous cases are increasingly often reported in Central Europe. Recent field surveys and curated vector-distribution datasets indicate that several phlebotomine sand fly species occur in the Carpathian Basin and climate-based suitability models suggest that ecologically favourable microhabitats may be present beyond the historical endemic zone. In this narrative, practice-oriented review, we synthesise literature published between 2004

Blood donation landscape in Bulgaria: data analytics insights from 2024.

The paper presents data and analysis of the blood group distributions of the Bulgarian population for the year 2024, retrieved from the national information system serving the centres and departments of transfusion haematology. Several significant indicators are considered in both national and regional aspects and in both absolute numbers and percentages. The study is particularly focused on tracing the ABO system blood type frequencies, Rh(D) antigen (rhesus factor) frequencies and certain demographic indicators of blood donation activity, including blood donor's sex, age, location and type o

Recruiting and Retaining Young Blood Donors: Recent Evidence and Next Steps.

Individuals under 30 represent a small share of the already limited blood donor pool, making their recruitment and retention critical to maintaining a sustainable blood supply. This article presents a narrative review of 13 recent studies (published since 2023) on engaging younger blood donors and discusses the effectiveness of emerging interventions. We find that existing interventions primarily target three mechanisms: (1) awareness, (2) social engagement, and (3) emotional arousal. Findings suggest that educational approaches can increase knowledge and reduce misconceptions, social and comm

Evaluating the Impact of Ferritin Testing: Iron Status of the Donor Pool, Changes to Hemoglobin Deferrals, and Effects on Product Availability.

Blood collectors in many jurisdictions globally have implemented ferritin testing of their donor populations as an additional donor safety measure. Where performed, ferritin testing is generally conducted on a selective basis, restricted to certain populations perceived to face higher risk for or from iron deficiency or applied to periodic rather than all donations from donors. The wide array of ferritin testing configurations that currently exist, together with underlying differences in donation eligibility policies, suggests the impact of ferritin testing on blood center and donor outcomes-b

International Assessment of Blood Donor False-positive Infectious Disease Screening Rates and Re-entry Practices: A BEST Collaborative Study.

False-positive infectious disease screening results in blood donors can lead to unnecessary donor deferral, emotional distress, and loss of future donations. We aimed to evaluate false-positive rates and re-entry practices across several international blood collectors. In this multinational retrospective study, 17 blood collectors provided data from January 2021 through December 2023 on infectious disease screening algorithms/methodologies, false-positive rates for HIV, HBV, HCV, and syphilis, and donor re-entry processes and rates. Participants also reported deferral policies and donor commun

Expanding the military blood donor pool through non-donor recruitment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The United States Armed Services Blood Program (ASBP) oversees blood collection for the US Department of War but faces recurring shortages. Donor motivations have been examined; the barriers and incentives affecting military non-donors have not. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A survey was conducted of 390 US military-affiliated non-donors served by two Air Force base donor centers. Participants rated 15 barriers and 13 incentives on 5-point Likert scales and gave open-text responses. Cronbach's alpha, principal component analysis, and analysis of variance assessed reliabili

Sex- and age-specific incidence and fraction of hospital contacts for infectious mononucleosis cases in Denmark in 1977-2011.

PURPOSE: Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is a common presentation of primary Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection in adolescence and later, but rare in childhood. Occasionally, IM leads to a hospital contact with an IM diagnosis (hospIM). Knowing the sex-, age- and period- specific probability of IM leading to hospIM allows estimating the overall sex-, age- and period-specific incidence of IM from inverse probability weighting of hospIM occurrences. METHODS: The probability of hospIM upon IM (hospfrac) was modelled in the Danish Blood Donor Study (DBDS) among persons with self-reported IM at age

Chikungunya case cluster with nonspecific symptoms: implications for primary care in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Early clinical presentation of chikungunya fever and other arbovirus infections is often nonspecific, potentially delaying diagnosis, particularly in settings where these diseases are less frequently considered. Competent vectors are expanding in Switzerland, increasing the risk of autochthonous arbovirus transmission. CASE SERIES: We report seven cases in a group of travellers returning from Kenya in summer 2025. All patients presented with fever, arthralgia affecting the small joints of the hands and feet, nausea, diarrhoea, and rash. Additional symptoms included generalised lym

The variability of cell-derived microparticles and the age of healthy blood donors.

INTRODUCTION: Cell-derived microparticles that promote coagulation can lead to transfusion-related complications. Although age-dependent changes in hemostasis are known, the impact of donor age on microparticle concentration variability remains largely unexplored. We sought to determine microparticle concentrations and investigate their relationship with donor age. METHODS: Whole-blood samples were collected from volunteers aged 17 to 60 years using K3EDTA as an anticoagulant. Donors were allocated to 1 of 5 age groups. Flow cytometric analysis and counting beads were used to determine microp

Incidence of parvovirus B19 among Hungarian blood donor population during COVID-19 restrictions and the subsequent B19 epidemic of 2024.

Nationwide screening for parvovirus B19 among blood donors in Hungary has been conducted since 2019. Although B19 is primarily transmitted via the respiratory route, transfusion-related transmission also occurs. This study investigated the impact of COVID-19-related restrictions on B19 incidence. Between January 1 2019 and December 31 2024, a total of 2,043,119 blood donations were screened for B19 DNA using PCR, and the study period was divided into six epidemiological phases.During the pre-restriction period (Phase I), B19 incidence was relatively low (0.87/10,000 donations). Following the i

Composition and dynamics of the adult nasal microbiome.

BACKGROUND: The nasal microbiome, a dynamic assemblage of commensals and opportunistic pathogens, is crucial to human health. RESULTS: Using cross-sectional data from 1,608 adults and longitudinal sampling of 149 individuals over 8-22 months, we identified nine nasal community state types (CSTs), defined by bacterial density and indicator taxa, with varying stability and transition patterns. Core taxa such as Staphylococcus epidermidis and Cutibacterium acnes were highly stable, while opportunistic pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus and Moraxella catarrhalis had shorter residence times. Left atrial strain response to acute preload reduction in healthy dogs using a translational blood donation model.

Left atrial function (LAF) is crucial to hemodynamics, but the effects of preload variation on its echocardiographic indices remain unclear. This study aimed to identify preload-independent phasic LA echocardiographic variables and to assess blood donor dogs as a hypovolemia model. Twenty-six healthy, client-owned dogs underwent transthoracic echocardiography before and after standardized blood donation. Phasic LA volumes and strain parameters were assessed, and a subgroup of dogs donating ≥ 10 mL/kg was also analyzed. After blood withdrawal, significant reductions were observed in maximum LA
