The good donation attempt: A qualitative analysis of donor experience regardless of phlebotomy outcome.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Globally, blood donation rates are declining as demand for blood products grows. Given that having a positive donation experience is key to retention, this analysis explores how aspects of service quality provided by blood collection agencies shape donation experiences. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To investigate donor experience, we considered both quantitative and qualitative responses provided by donors in a standard post-donation feedback survey. Responses were stratified by self-reported experience using a standard customer loyalty question and donation outcome, and

Positive neonatal direct antiglobulin test and free circulating panagglutinin due to high-titer immunoglobulin G1 anti-Inb without in vivo hemolysis.

BACKGROUND: The cluster of differentiation 44 glycoprotein carries the Indian blood group system, including the antithetical antigens Ina and Inb. The Inb antigen is highly prevalent, with more than 99.9% of Caucasians being Inb-positive, whereas Inb-negative individuals are found almost exclusively in South Asian populations (~0.02%). Anti-Inb can cause hemolytic transfusion reactions, but little data are available on hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN), suggesting minimal placental transfer, with only one reported case of a positive neonatal direct antiglobulin test (DAT). High transmission risk of Human Immunodeficiency Virus in blood transfusions: A critical evaluation of blood bank serological tests in Mozambique.

Many settings in sub-Saharan Africa use rapid antibody assays to detect human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among blood donor candidates. This study aimed to evaluate the analytical performance of HIV serological tests used to screen blood donor candidates in Mozambique. Determine HIV 1/2 + Uni-Gold HIV (the routine HIV testing at blood banks in Mozambique), and two newer rapid tests (Determine HIV Early Detect and Meriscreen HIV1-2 Western Blot) were compared with an Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assays (Merilisa HIV Gen 4 test + Uni-Gold HIV). Additionally, all serological tests were

Budget impact of implementing universal Plasmodium NAT screening in the blood transfusion system in the US.

BACKGROUND: Blood donor deferral for malaria risk relies exclusively on responses to self-reported questionnaires. This study evaluated the economic impact of introducing Plasmodium nucleic acid testing (NAT) as a universal screening strategy in the United States. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A budget impact analysis comparing scenarios with and without universal Plasmodium NAT screening was conducted. In the testing scenario, question (Q) 29 on malaria risk was removed from the donor questionnaire. NAT was performed on mini-pools of 16 donations, followed by individual testing of reactive pools

A decision-making process to guide the potential application of a hepatitis A virus and parvovirus B19 nucleic acid test for qualifying plasma for fractionation.

BACKGROUND: The Roche cobas DPX assay (Roche Diagnostics) is a nucleic acid test (NAT) that detects parvovirus B19 (B19V) and hepatitis A virus (HAV) and enhances the safety of fractionated plasma protein products. Implementation of this NAT requires multiple decisions focused on test characteristics, test operationalization, and result interpretation. This study uses a decision-making process to guide the potential application of this NAT to qualify plasma for fractionation. METHODS: A basic decision tree approach was used to undertake a stepwise feasibility study of the B19V/HAV assay in a

Public perspectives on potential changes to malaria deferral criteria in Canada.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: As blood collection agencies (BCAs) seek to increase donor diversity, making changes to eligibility criteria to enable more people to donate is an important consideration. BCAs in Canada have a permanent deferral from whole blood and platelet donation for anyone with a history of malaria, a barrier to donation for many in African, Caribbean and Black (ACB) communities. If a malaria nucleic acid test (NAT) is implemented in donor screening, malaria-related deferral criteria could be eased. This study explored the public's views on potential changes to malaria deferral

Alpha-gal sensitization and allergic transfusion reactions: a scoping review protocol.

BACKGROUND: Tick bites may expose individuals to a carbohydrate not found in humans, galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal). A spectrum of disorders may result from IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reactions to alpha-gal, including alpha-gal syndrome (AGS), an allergy to meat or meat-derived products usually presenting 2-6 h after consuming the product plus positive alpha-gal specific IgE testing for the oligosaccharide. Reports of anaphylaxis in group O recipients of group B plasma in the absence of other risk factors for severe allergic reactions to blood transfusion could be alpha-gal sensi

A Snapshot of the UK Blood Donor Plasma Virome: A Retrospective Cross-Sectional Cohort Study.

Estimates of population prevalence and genetic diversity of bloodborne viruses in healthy humans are essential to support population-scale monitoring for transfusion transmission risk. In the UK and globally, blood donations are routinely screened for a limited number of high-consequence pathogens, but the full composition of the plasma virome remains to be characterized. Using a novel quantitative targeted metagenomics sequencing approach, we analyzed previously unscreened plasma donations collected by NHS Blood and Transplant in England for all major pathogenic and known commensal human bloo

Impact of blood donation on serum cobalamin and folic acid concentrations in dogs.

Serum cobalamin (B12) and folic acid (B9) support bone marrow and intestinal activity. While blood donation (BD) is known to affect haematological and iron status, its impact on vitamin B12/B9 levels is poorly studied in humans and not investigated in dogs. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of BD on serum vitamin B12 and vitamin B9 concentrations in blood donor dogs. Eighty-nine blood donor dogs were included from June 2024 to March 2025. Serum vitamin B12 and vitamin B9 were measured, and the corresponding complete blood count was analysed. Age, sex, breed, the total number of BD and BD

Asymptomatic Trypanosoma cruzi Infection Identified During Blood Donation Screening.

Chagas disease, also known as American trypanosomiasis, is caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi. The global burden of Chagas disease, particularly in non-endemic regions, is increasing due to migration. In the chronic phase, which can last until treatment is administered, the majority of infected individuals remain asymptomatic. This can lead to challenges in diagnosis and increase the risk of patients developing severe, late complications. Diagnosis in chronic cases depends on serologic testing since parasitemia is low. CDC guidelines recommend confirmation with two distinct serologic as
