Donor risk factors for graft failure in the cornea donor study.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between donor factors and 5-year corneal graft survival in the Cornea Donor Study. METHODS: Donor corneas met criteria established by the Eye Bank Association of America, had an endothelial cell density of 2300 to 3300/mm, and were determined to be of good to excellent quality by the eye banks. Donor corneas were assigned using a random approach and surgeons were masked to information about the donor cornea including donor age. Surgery and postoperative care were performed according to the surgeons' usual routines and subjects

The influence of viewing an entertainment-education program on cornea donation intention: a test of the theory of planned behavior.

This study was designed to examine the role of issue involvement and the 3 components of the theory of planned behavior in predicting intentions to sign a cornea donor card. This study also compares viewers and nonviewers of an entertainment-education program in terms of issue involvement and the theory of planned behavior. The breakdown of effects for the latent constructs confirms that issue involvement is an important intermediary in the persuasion process. Issue involvement is a common causal antecedent of attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control, the last 2 of which, in

Central corneal opacification resulting from recent chemotherapy in corneal donors.

PURPOSE: Ocular surface disease following penetrating keratoplasty has been shown to increase patient morbidity and adversely affect graft survival. Five cases of dense central subepithelial opacification were noted in keratoplasty patients who received tissue from donors who had chemotherapy prior to death. Cancer-related deaths account for approximately 20% of the cornea donor pool. The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of recent systemic antimetabolite therapy on donor corneas. METHODS: Eye bank donor charts of 120 consecutive penetrating keratoplasty donors were retrospecti

Failure and success of HIV tests for the prevention of HIV-1 transmission by blood and tissue donations.

French blood banks recently implemented nucleic acid testing (NAT) of all blood donations to reduce the risk of HIV transmission during the pre-seroconversion period. For tissue donation, HIV infection screening relies on HIV p24 antigen and anti-HIV-1 and 2 antibody detection. In this report, two related cases of infectious donations are described from a cornea donor during the preseroconversion window who was infected by an HIV antibody and NAT negative blood donor. After investigation, the blood donor was found to be herself in the preseroconversion window. Two months after donation, she wa

Lamellar corneal autograft for corneal perforation.

BACKGROUND: Corneal perforation secondary to exteriorization of the haptic foot of the anterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) is a rare complication in IOL surgery. CASE REPORT: A superior penetrating corneal defect developed in the right eye of a 74-year-old woman associated with exteriorization of the superior haptic of an anterior chamber IOL. METHODS: We describe the technique of repositioning and successful patching of the defect using a lamellar cornea-sclera rotational autograft. CONCLUSIONS: This technique is useful for small perforations when cornea donor tissue is not available.
