The regulation of the hepatic uptake of chylomicron remnants and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) remnants was studied in the rat using a nonrecirculating liver perfusion system. The hepatic removal of remnant lipoproteins was shown to be by receptor-mediated processes since the concentration-dependent uptake was saturable and reductive methylation of the particles reduced the uptake of each lipoprotein by two-thirds. A plasma factor, "coagulopoietin", present in animals with depleted vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors, appears to enhance activity of these factors in normal animals. Using the isolated perfused rat liver and anti-rat fibronectin antiserum, we have measured net hepatic synthesis of fibronectin during 10-hr perfusion periods. Rat Factor II (prothrombin), isolated and purified by chromatography on Blue Dextran-agarose, was used to raise an antiserum in rabbits. On the basis of single radial immunodiffusion measurements. The fetal liver chimera system was used as a model to study the nature of transplantation tolerance in radiation chimeras. A permanent state of tolerance was induced in (C3H/eb times C57BL/6)F1 irradiated mice after reconstitution with parental C57BL/6 fetal or neonatal liver cells.
