To find out to what extent rejection of lungs differs from that of other organs, functional rejection of lung allografts was studied in five combinations of inbred rat strains. Rejection could be monitored accurately by perfusion scintigraphy, and equally well by chest roentgenography. The rejection of lung grafts was found to proceed remarkably fast, when compared with heart grafts, in combinations with strong RT1-incompatibilities. Haemophilus influenzae organisms, both type b and non-typable strains, were tested for their adherence to human buccal epithelial cells. Adherence was determined by visual examination of gram-stained specimens of epithelial cells following incubation with H. influenzae. Techniques have been developed which permit removal of the kidneys, liver, heart and other organs from the same donor without jeopardy to any of the individual grafts. The guiding principle is avoidance with all organs of warm ischemia. This is achieved by carefully timed and controlled infusion of cold solutions into anatomic regions, the limits of which are defined by preliminary dissection.

We examined the enhancing effect of antitumor activity by co-administration of 5-FU or its masked form (FT-207) with bases or nucleosides of purine and pyrimidine. It was found that the antitumor activity of 5-FU or FT-207 on sarcoma-180 and AH-130 tumor was oral administration of uracil, deoxyuridine, uridine, thymine or thymidine.
