Laparoscopic Ladd procedure for adult-onset intestinal malrotation with midgut volvulus: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal malrotation is a rare congenital anomaly resulting from the incomplete rotation of the midgut. While commonly diagnosed in newborns, adult presentation is extremely rare (0.2-0.5%), making its true incidence unknown. This case report describes a rare adult-onset midgut volvulus successfully managed via a minimally invasive approach. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 29-year-old female presented to the emergency department (ED) with acute abdominal pain, nausea, and a history in the last two years of intermittent, self-limiting subocclusive episodes. Abdominal computed tomography (CT)

Outpatient opioid dispensing during the 2024 floods in Southern Brazil: a population-based ecological time-series analysis.

BACKGROUND: Climate-related disasters can disrupt health-care delivery and treatment continuity. Evidence on their effects on opioid dispensing in middle-income countries remains scarce. We assessed whether the May 2024 floods were associated with changes in outpatient opioid dispensing in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective ecological time-series study using official Brazilian Ministry of Health data on codeine, morphine, and methadone dispensations from 2015 to 2025. Monthly rates per 10,000 inhabitants were modelled with quadratic secular and seasonal terms, mo

Atrial and ventricular mechanical dysfunction and myocardial injury predict long-term outcomes in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction is a hallmark of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and imposes chronic pressure overload on the left atrium, leading to progressive atrial remodeling and functional impairment. Conventional left atrial (LA) volumetric indices reflect comparatively advanced structural alterations and are incapable of identifying early functional deterioration. The present research sought to investigate the prognostic significance of LA and LV myocardial deformation parameters obtained from cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) in patients with HCM. METH

Adaptation and Translation of the Brain Fog Scale into the Indian Psycho-Socio-Cultural Context.

BACKGROUND: Brain fog is a subjective experience characterised by forgetfulness, poor concentration, mental slowness, dissociation and fatigue, with individuals describing experiences such as a 'mental wall' over formerly simple tasks. During and after the 2019 pandemic, scientific enquiry into brain fog was revived, explored and studied worldwide. Specifically, a large number of studies focused on the COVID-19 population and established strong associations with long COVID. Further, this in-depth research interest has led to the emergence of brain fog as a transdiagnostic factor. PURPOSE: Ove

Utilization of 68Ga-FAPI PET/CT improves the gross tumor volume delineation in nasopharyngeal carcinoma within a safe radiation dose to organs at risk.

BACKGROUND: Accurate delineation of the nasopharynx gross tumor volume (GTVnx) of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is crucial for patients requiring radiotherapy, as it correlates with prognosis. Current GTVnx delineation methods have significant shortcomings, often resulting in insufficient coverage of the radiotherapy target area. Gallium-68-labeled fibroblast activation protein inhibitor (68Ga-FAPI) is an emerging and promising tumor imaging agent. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of combining 68Ga-FAPI positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) for delineating GTV

SFTSV infection drives platelet-associated fibrinogen accumulation and platelet-mediated coagulopathy.

BACKGROUND: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging viral hemorrhagic fever characterized by high mortality, thrombocytopenia, and coagulation abnormalities. Unlike other inflammatory conditions where plasma fibrinogen rises, patients with SFTS exhibit normal fibrinogen levels despite evidence of consumptive coagulopathy and hepatocyte injury. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate whether platelets contribute to fibrinogen dysregulation and coagulopathy in SFTS. METHODS: We enrolled 102 patients with SFTS stratified by clinical symptoms (mild vs sever
