Congenital coalition of the middle and distal phalanges in the fifth toe are common. They have been reported to occur in up to 50% of American and European populations and in up to 73% of people of Japanese descent. Eighteen cases of septic osteitis of the distal phalanx were diagnosed clinically and confirmed at surgery over a 6 year period (1990-1996). Focal bone lysis was the most common radiographic finding. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The cost effectiveness of trochanteric hip fractures in 1995 at Pitié-Salpétrière Hospital in Paris has been thoroughly analysed. The aim of this retrospective study was to identify the factors responsible for the variation in the treatment cost of those fractures.

Abdominal wall disruption following blunt trauma is a rare but challenging injury, both in the acute and convalescent phases. The present report describes the recent experience with this injury at a single adult trauma center. In a 22-month period, nine patients with traumatic abdominal wall disruption were managed. The importance of social support and depression to recovery from illness is examined with reference to hip fracture. Results in 23 patients with significant craniocerebral trauma (Glasgow Coma Scale less than or equal to 10) and displaced acetabular fracture requiring surgery were reviewed after a minimum follow-up of 1 year.
