BACKGROUND: Orthohantaviruses (hantaviruses) are emerging rodent-borne pathogens that can cause severe human disease. They are present on multiple continents and are responsible for thousands of human cases per year. Despite this, no licenced therapeutics are available, vaccines for most strains are lacking, and the immunological response to infection is poorly characterised. This study aimed to analyse the humoral immune response to Puumala virus (PUUV) infection to inform future studies focussing on the production of therapeutic monoclonal antibodies and vaccination strategies.

Murine typhus, caused by Rickettsia typhi, is a flea-borne zoonosis that typically presents with fever, headache, myalgias, and rash. Central nervous system involvement is uncommon, and neuroimaging findings that mimic posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) are rarely reported. This case highlights a rare neuroinfectious presentation of murine typhus with PRES-like imaging findings in a young woman. A previously healthy woman in her 30s presented with persistent retro-orbital headaches, intermittent fevers, tremors, dysarthria, photophobia, myalgias, progressive weakness, and recu

UNLABELLED: Current laboratory testing for Lyme disease (LD) relies on serology. We evaluated the performance of standard two-tiered testing (STTT) and modified two-tiered testing (MTTT) algorithms using samples obtained from well-characterized patients with early LD in the U.S. East Coast and Upper Midwest. Participants with signs and symptoms of early LD (cases) and controls were enrolled by Lyme Disease Biobank. We compared the performance of four FDA-cleared STTT or MTTT algorithms using serum samples from 251 participants (107 cases, 69 with a convalescent draw; 144 endemic controls). At

BACKGROUND: The introduction of second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) over the past 2 decades generated considerable optimism that better antipsychotic treatments for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder were possible. SGAs offer several tolerability benefits over first-generation antipsychotics (FGAs), particularly with respect to extrapyramidal symptoms. However, SGAs can induce serious metabolic dysregulations, especially in drug-naive, first-episode, and child and adolescent populations, with olanzapine and clozapine having the highest propensity to cause these abnormalities. In this conte

Background Brain frailty has gained attention as a predictor of poor functional outcomes. However, the relationship between brain frailty and physical function among patients with stroke undergoing rehabilitation remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between brain frailty and activities of daily living (ADLs) at discharge among patients with stroke admitted to a convalescent rehabilitation ward. Methods This single-center retrospective cohort study included patients with stroke admitted to the convalescent rehabilitation ward. Brain frailty (i.e., white matter hyper

According to the WHO and domestic statistics, chronic diseases are one of the most common causes of disability in the Polish society, as well as in the world. The presence of the disease significantly reduces the quality of life (QoL), and gender is a factor determining the level of perceived health-related quality of life (HR-QoL), but there are no cross-sectional studies considering several disease entities. Ranking of diseases determining HR-QoL of patients in 13 different groups of disease entities by gender, assessed using the standardized tool for assessing the quality of life SF-36. A c

Introduction The Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) is a functional assessment tool comprising three components: balance, gait, and muscle strength. It is easier to administer than the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), which has been used to determine walking independence. However, the cutoff value of the SPPB for determining walking independence in patients with stroke remains unknown. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the utility and cutoff values of the SPPB and BBS for determining walking independence in patients with stroke. Methods A total of 301 patients with stroke (mean age: 71.8±

At the COVID-19 pandemic onset, convalescent plasma, collected from patients recovered from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, emerged as a potential treatment option, but the effect on the patient immune response was unclear. To determine treatment effect on the infection antibody response, plasma samples were collected through 90 days from 104 SARS-CoV-2-infected participants after receiving CCP or control plasma, as part of a multicenter, double-blind, randomized, controlled early treatment trial. Enzyme immunoassay (EIA) was used to quantify binding IgG

The evolution of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its impact on public health continue to demand attention as the virus continues to evolve, demonstrating a remarkable ability to adapt to diverse selective pressures including immune responses, therapeutic treatments, and prophylactic interventions. The SARS-CoV-2 variant landscape remains dynamic, with new subvariants continuously emerging, many harboring spike protein mutations linked to immune evasion. In this study, we characterized a panel of live SARS-CoV-2 strains, including those key subvariants impli

During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the use of convalescent plasma (CP) in high-risk patients was proposed and widely implemented in several countries as a potential COVID-19 therapy. Nonetheless, CP therapy's impact on immune response is nowadays poorly understood, including the correlation between IgG levels, neutralization capacity, and cellular immune response against SARS-CoV-2. Here we evaluated, in a cohort of patients with COVID-19 requiring hospitalization and having received or not CP, as well as in CP donors (recovered from mild disease), the humoral and cellular immune response assesse

Objective During the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, the unavailability of any specific antiviral agents or vaccines to combat the pandemic demanded an efficient therapeutic approach. Convalescent plasma (CP) emerged as an alternative therapy for COVID-19 patients. The primary objective of the study was to observe the anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody levels in repetitive convalescent plasma donation from the same individual. Methods The present study was carried out between 5th August 2020 and 17th May 2021 in the Transfusion Medicine department, Maharaja Krushna Chand

The recently mutated Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 exhibits extremely high infectivity and strong evolution and immune escape capabilities. Given the unique epidemic prevention policies of China, we collected 16 sets of sera from convalescent individuals (n = 308) with breakthrough infections who had received different immunization regimens and from healthy people over the subsequent year after epidemic control ceased in China on 7 December 2022. We assessed the susceptibility of the serum to the prototype, Omicron BA.5.2, Omicron XBB.1.5, and Omicron JN.1.5 subvariants at 3-, 5-, 8- and 11-mo

Stroke and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) are common causes of impaired walking and reduced physical activity levels, both of which contribute to a decline in quality of life (QOL). Effective rehabilitation strategies that integrate functional training and physical activity management are essential for improving walking ability and QOL in patients with such multimorbidity. This case report describes a 70-year-old woman with left hemiparesis due to branch atheromatous disease and PAD (Fontaine stage IIb). She participated in a comprehensive rehabilitation program that combined functional tra

Background and objective In the context of Japan's rapidly aging society, there is an increasing demand for effective rehabilitation strategies to support individuals with diminished physical function. This study aimed to identify the optimal combination of systemic condition and physical function indicators that most strongly influence functional independence measure (FIM) gains, a key outcome index in rehabilitation. Methods This retrospective study included 31 inpatients (mean age: 71.5 ± 13.6 years) with cerebrovascular or musculoskeletal diseases in a convalescent rehabilitation ward. Sys
