Understanding Educational and Psychosocial Factors Associated with Alcohol Use among Adolescents in Denmark; Implications for Health Literacy Interventions.

Background. Alcohol misuse is a global public health priority, with a variation in prevalence and impact between countries. Alcohol misuse in adolescence is associated with adverse psychological, social and physical health. Adolescents in Denmark have higher alcohol consumption and problematic alcohol use than adolescents in other European countries. Associations between social determinants of health (SDH), psycho-social factors and alcohol consumption are complex and influenced by national context and cultures. This study explored these associations in Danish adolescents. Method. The European

A first step to improving maternal mortality in a low-literacy setting; the successful use of singing to improve knowledge regarding antenatal care.

BACKGROUND: Preventable maternal mortality is related to delays in recognizing the problem, transport to a facility, and receiving appropriate care on arrival. Reducing maternal mortality in low-literacy settings is particularly challenging. In the rural villages of Nepal, the maternal mortality rate is among the highest in the world; the reasons include illiteracy and lack of knowledge of the needs of pregnant women. Culturally, singing and dancing are part of Nepalese daily life and present an opportunity to transmit knowledge of antenatal care and care at birth with a view to reducing the f

Bridging the Gap: A Pilot Program to Understand and Meet the Needs of Pediatric Patients and Families as They Transition Off Cancer-Directed Therapy.

Background: With improved curative therapies, over 80% of children and adolescent/young adults diagnosed with cancer are expected to live into adulthood. This population is at risk for increased morbidity and early mortality and requires ongoing health care and surveillance for late effects of treatment. This pilot study assessed the acceptability of a structured medical visit at the completion of cancer-directed therapy as well as patient/family's knowledge of diagnosis and other aspects of care. Method: Patients/families who were 0 to 6 months from completion of cancer-directed therapy atten

A program to respond to otitis media in remote Australian Aboriginal communities: a qualitative investigation of parent perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous infants and children in Australia, especially in remote communities, experience early and chronic otitis media (OM) which is difficult to treat and has lifelong impacts in health and education. The LiTTLe Program (Learning to Talk, Talking to Learn) aimed to increase infants' access to spoken language input, teach parents to manage health and hearing problems, and support children's school readiness. This paper aimed to explore caregivers' views about this inclusive, parent-implemented early childhood program for 0-3 years in an Aboriginal community health context. METH

Effects of Lactobacillus acidophilus on the growth performance and intestinal health of broilers challenged with Clostridium perfringens.

Exertional heat stroke (EHS) is a life‑threatening condition characterized by hyperthermia, systemic inflammation and central nervous system injury, particularly in desert dry‑heat environments. Excessive activation of inflammatory signaling pathways, notably the Toll‑like receptor (TLR)4/myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88)/NF‑κB axis, critically contributes to brain damage and neuroendocrine dysfunction in EHS. Curcumin exhibits anti‑inflammatory and neuroprotective effects; however, poor bioavailability limits its clinical application. Notably, nanocrystal formulations may improve the

The Clinical Nutrition Research Agenda in Indonesia and beyond: ecological strategy for food in health care delivery.

Despite progress with the food-associated health agenda in the public health and clinical domains, much remains to be done in Indonesia. There are reasons to be optimistic which include economic development, increasing literacy, progress towards universal health coverage and community organizational arrangements across the archipelago which focus on health through some 10,000 puskesmas. These community health centres are variably staffed with voluntary cadres from the community, bidans (nurses) and general medical practitioners. For more effective prevention and management of nutritionally-rel

Health Literacy Not Associated with Chronic Kidney Disease Awareness.

BACKGROUND: Patient awareness of their chronic kidney disease (CKD) and health literacy (HL) are both important for adherence to therapies that slow CKD progression and to reduce risk of complications. Little is known about the association between HL and CKD awareness. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine if patient HL is associated with CKD awareness. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of general medicine inpatients at an urban academic medical center discharged between June 2011 and July 2013 with CKD, defined as having at least one CKD International Classification of Diseases, nin

Implementation strategies for health systems in low-income countries: an overview of systematic reviews.

BACKGROUND: A key function of health systems is implementing interventions to improve health, but coverage of essential health interventions remains low in low-income countries. Implementing interventions can be challenging, particularly if it entails complex changes in clinical routines; in collaborative patterns among different healthcare providers and disciplines; in the behaviour of providers, patients or other stakeholders; or in the organisation of care. Decision-makers may use a range of strategies to implement health interventions, and these choices should be based on evidence of the s

Factors that support successful transition to the community among women leaving prison in British Columbia: a prospective cohort study using participatory action research.

BACKGROUND: In Canada, the number of women sentenced to prison has almost doubled since 1995. In British Columbia, the rate of reincarceration is 70% within 2 years. Our aim was to identify factors associated with recidivism among women in British Columbia. METHODS: We prospectively followed women after discharge from provincial corrections centres in British Columbia. We defined recidivism as participation in criminal activity disclosed by participants during the year following release. To identify predictive factors, we carried out a repeated-measures analysis using a logistic mixed-effect

New South Wales Child Development Study (NSW-CDS): an Australian multiagency, multigenerational, longitudinal record linkage study.

PURPOSE: The initial aim of this multiagency, multigenerational record linkage study is to identify childhood profiles of developmental vulnerability and resilience, and to identify the determinants of these profiles. The eventual aim is to identify risk and protective factors for later childhood-onset and adolescent-onset mental health problems, and other adverse social outcomes, using subsequent waves of record linkage. The research will assist in informing the development of public policy and intervention guidelines to help prevent or mitigate adverse long-term health and social outcomes.

EPA guidance on improving the image of psychiatry.

This paper explores causes, explanations and consequences of the negative image of psychiatry and develops recommendations for improvement. It is primarily based on a WPA guidance paper on how to combat the stigmatization of psychiatry and psychiatrists and a Medline search on related publications since 2010. Furthermore, focussing on potential causes and explanations, the authors performed a selective literature search regarding additional image-related issues such as mental health literacy and diagnostic and treatment issues. Underestimation of psychiatry results from both unjustified prejud
