A retrospective cohort analysis of people living with HIV/AIDS enrolled in HIV care at a reference center in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

BACKGROUND: The impact of the "Treat all" policy on the individual and in terms of public health is closely related to early diagnosis and retention in care. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of PLHIV aged ≥15 years newly diagnosed at the University Hospital Joseph Raseta Befelatanana Antanan

Coding long COVID: characterizing a new disease through an ICD-10 lens.

BACKGROUND: Naming a newly discovered disease is a difficult process; in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the existence of post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), which includes long COVID, it has proven especially challenging. Disease definitions and assignment of a diagnosis code are often asynchronous and iterative. The clinical definition and our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of long COVID are still in flux, and the deployment of an ICD-10-CM code for long COVID in the USA took nearly 2 years after patients had begun to describe their condition. Here, we le

Emergency Medical Services Demand: An Analysis of County-Level Social Determinants.

OBJECTIVES: Variations in the demand for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) exist when observed at a local level. This unspecified heterogeneity leads to an investigation of social factors contributing to EMS demand. METHODS: Data for this study were collected from publicly available EMS reports from Florida and Oklahoma for 2009 - 2015. Health and social data were gathered from County health rankings and roadmap reports. Data were combined into a single dataset, and pooled ordinary-least-squares models with time-fixed effects were utilized for tests of inference. EMS call volume was log-transf

Waiting for Recovery: The Canadian Labour Market in June 2020.

The Canadian labour market is currently emerging from a holding pattern with unusually high numbers of people in temporary (or "recall") unemployment, people who are "employed but absent from work" for unspecified reasons, or people who are not in the labour force while waiting to be recalled. Two encouraging signs are evident. New postings of vacancies have recovered from 50 percent to about 80 percent of their pre-crisis level. Also, data suggest that the increase in employment in May 2020 is due to the re-entry into employment of some of those waiting to be recalled. These patterns suggest

[Situation and reasons for missed follow-up services among newly reported HIV/AIDS cases transmitted by homosexual behavior in China, 2008-2015].

Objective: To determine the prevalence and relative factors on those who missed the follow-up service among newly reported HIV/AIDS cases that were infected by homosexual behavior. Methods: Data were extracted from both HIV/AIDS case-reporting and follow-up cards on HIV/AIDS in the Comprehensive Response Information Management System, between December 2008 and December 2015. Data was analyzed, using the generalized estimating equations (GEE) to explore the relative factors of influence. Results: Among the newly reported HIV infection among MSM, the proportion of those who missed the follow-up

[Long-term survival in working-age patients after cerebrovascular accident].

AIM: To assess the long-term survival in working-age patients after cerebrovascular accident (CVA) and to define basic medical and social factors determining the survival rates. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A continuous retrospective study included 756 working-age patients (<60 years) after CVA. The life-table method and Kaplan-Meier analysis were used to calculate a survival rate. RESULTS: The highest risk of death was observed in the first year of CVA. One-year survival after CVA was 81.7%, falling to 74.7% at 3 years and to 57.9% at 7 years. The five-year survival was lower among men (60%) compa

The influence of psychosocial factors on recovery following acute whiplash trauma.

Persistent pain and disability after whiplash trauma has become an increasingly significant problem in many industrialized countries entailing comprehensive individual as well as social costs. The dissertation includes two areas of research within whiplash trauma. The first part contains two empirical articles focusing on risk factors for poor recovery. The second part contains a systematic review and an empirical article and concerns the influence of coping strategies on recovery with a special emphasis on possible gender differences. All empirical articles in the dissertation are based on se

A study on epidemiological profile of anxiety disorders among people living with HIV/AIDS in a sub-Saharan Africa HIV clinic.

The aim of this study is to find out the prevalence, types and correlates of anxiety disorders among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) attending a sub-Saharan Africa HIV clinic. Three hundred HIV positive adults were subjected to semi-structured clinical interview using the Schedule for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry to diagnose anxiety disorders in them. Additionally, a socio-demographic/clinical profile questionnaire designed for the study was administered to the study participants. The prevalence of anxiety disorders among PLWHA in this study was 21.7 %, and anxiety disorder unspe

Post-trauma ratings of pre-collision pain and psychological distress predict poor outcome following acute whiplash trauma: a 12-month follow-up study.

Patients with acute whiplash trauma were followed to examine if post-trauma ratings of pre-collision pain and psychological distress were associated with reduced work capability and neck pain at 12 months follow-up. The study included 740 consecutive patients (474 females, 266 males) referred from emergency departments or primary care after car accidents in four counties in Denmark. After the collision patients received a questionnaire on psychological distress, unspecified pain and socio-demographics and 12 months later a follow-up on work capability and neck pain was performed. Risk factors
