Glottic stenosis may be congenital, such as anterior glottic webs, or acquired, as a result of surgery or prolonged intubation. Glottic-level obstruction may occur as an isolated lesion or as part of multilevel airway stenosis. Careful evaluation is required to distinguish neural causes of impaired vocal fold motion from true mechanical fixation, as the underlying etiology can influences surgical decision-making. When addressing glottic-level stenosis, particular attention must be paid to the potential effects on voice and swallowing while striving to achieve adequate airway caliber.

Stridor is a high-pitched airway sound that can be produced from static or dynamic lesions along the upper airway. Airway fluoroscopy (AF) has been utilized as a diagnostic test to evaluate pediatric stridor, but prior studies have shown limitations. We aim to assess the reliability of airway fluoroscopy as compared to direct laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy (DLB) in evaluating pediatric stridor, with stratification of airway subsite. A retrospective chart review was performed. 184 patients were evaluated who had undergone both AF and DLB within one year of each other. Sensitivity and specificity

Airway involvement in epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is rare and most commonly associated with junctional EB. Laryngotracheal disease in epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS), particularly PLEC (Plectin gene)-related variants, is uncommon but may cause significant morbidity. We report a 7-year-old girl with autosomal recessive PLEC-related EBS who developed progressive supraglottic and glottic stenosis. She presented at 8 months old with severe respiratory distress requiring emergent tracheostomy. Serial endoscopies revealed persistent supraglottic granulation, an anterior glottic web, posterior glo

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive histiocytic lesions are rare neoplastic disorders characterized by abnormal histiocytes with ALK gene rearrangements, typically presenting with systemic or localized tissue infiltration in young children. We report the case of a 3-year-old boy with progressively worsening biphasic stridor, found to have an isolated ALK+ histiocytic lesion in the subglottis. This case represents the first reported instance of an isolated ALK+ histiocytic lesion of the airway managed with endoscopic debulking.

Information on the maintenance of tissue homeostasis is important for developing effective therapeutic methods. However, reports on the cellular composition and tissue stem cells of the larynx are scarce. Therefore, we analyzed mouse laryngeal mucosa using single-cell RNA- sequencing and spatial transcriptomics by photo-isolation chemistry, and we also generated laryngeal organoids as an in vitro model. Consequently, we found a SOX9-positive basal cell subpopulation and a Lgr5-positive cell subpopulation in the mouse vocal fold, and obtained three types of epithelial organoids from laryngeal e

Pulmonary ionocytes are rare epithelial cells that bear the highest amount of mRNA for CFTR and whose function is necessary to regulate airway surface liquid homeostasis. Lineage induction is regulated by the transcription factor forkhead box i1 (Foxi1), but the temporal and spatial localization of Foxi1+ cells during airway development and the impact of CFTR mutations remain poorly understood. Here, we used immunofluorescence and RNAscope to detect Foxi1+ cells throughout postnatal airway development in male and female mice, from neonatal stages to 1 yr of age, including CftrΔF508 mutant anim

IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a systemic fibroinflammatory disorder characterized by complex immune-mediated mechanisms and broad organ involvement that remains substantially underdiagnosed in clinical practice. The head and neck region is one of the most commonly involved anatomical domains, encompassing the major salivary glands, lacrimal glands, nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, larynx and subglottis, thyroid gland, middle ear, orbit, and cervical lymph nodes. This review integrates current understanding of the immunopathological mechanisms underlying IgG4-RD with organ-specific clini

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Subglottic stenosis profoundly alters upper-airway aerodynamics and inhaled corticosteroid delivery, yet current clinical staging systems inadequately capture the functional impact of stenosis geometry. Specifically, the combined effects of stenosis length and cross-sectional severity on airflow resistance and aerosol deposition remain poorly characterized. This study investigates the impact of stenotic lengths, categorized by McCaffrey staging, and stenotic cross-sectional constrictions, defined by Cotton-Myer system, on airway resistance and aerosol deposition effic

Post-intubation tracheal stenosis (PITS) can remain clinically silent until a physiological stressor precipitates life-threatening airway failure. This case report describes a 15-year-old male, a survivor of traumatic brain injury requiring prolonged endotracheal intubation, who presented in active convulsive status epilepticus with a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 4 and oxygen saturation of 43%. Sequential endotracheal intubation with three tube sizes failed, establishing a cannot intubate, cannot oxygenate (CICO) scenario. Emergency flexible bronchoscopy, performed with a laryngeal mask airway

In cartilage tissue, the exchange of nutrients and metabolic waste products occur solely through diffusion within the extracellular matrix. Due to the avascular nature of cartilage, once it is damaged, its inherent regenerative capacity is limited. Laryngeal cartilage defects often result from surgical interventions, such as those performed for laryngeal tumors, traumatic injuries to the larynx, and congenital laryngeal deformities. Clinically, autologous cartilage or synthetic substitutes are commonly used for repairing and reconstructing laryngeal cartilage. However, these conventional appro

OBJECTIVES: Head and neck papillomas (HNPs) are benign yet frequently recurrent epithelial neoplasms caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). However, no accurate and convenient HPV detection method is widely adopted for these lesions.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 866 HNP patients (Nov 2008-Oct 2024) at West China Hospital. Epidemiological features were stratified by age and tumor site. Multivariate regression identified independent recurrence risk factors. A novel swab-based HPV test detecting 25 subtypes via capillary electrophoresis fragment analysis targeting HPV E6/E7 DNA was applie

Blunt force trauma to the larynx can cause significant damage, resulting in displaced laryngeal cartilage fractures. Vertical misalignment of the left or right vocal fold (VF) in the inferior-superior direction and scarring of the VF tissue are common outcomes. The influence of inferior-superior VF displacement and VF scarring on phonation was investigated using synthetic, self-oscillating VF models in a physiologically-representative facility. Acoustic, kinematic, and aerodynamic parameters were assessed as a function of inferior-superior vertical displacement and asymmetric VF stiffness. The

Laryngeal lesions reported as "ectopic" salivary gland tissue are exceedingly rare, with fewer than 10 examples documented. The histogenesis of these lesions remains uncertain, and the terminology applied has not been critically reevaluated. A 63-year-old man presented with persistent throat discomfort. Laryngoscopy revealed a 9.5-mm left supraglottic nodule, which was excised microsurgically. Histopathologic examination demonstrated seromucous acini intimately admixed with lipomatous stroma, together with cystically dilated oncocytic ductal structures associated with lymphoid stroma. Bainbridge-Ropers syndrome (BRPS, OMIM #615485) is a rare, heterogeneous autosomal dominant genetic disease that is mainly characterized by intellectual disability (ID) of varying degrees, developmental delay (DD), language impairments, failure to thrive, behavioral issues, hypotonia, feeding difficulties, and distinctive craniofacial features. It is caused by heterozygous pathogenic variants in the additional sex combs-like 3 (ASXL3, OMIM #615115) gene. In this study, four Chinese patients were diagnosed with BRPS caused by ASXL3 variants through whole exome sequencing. We detected two novel

Laryngeal fractures are rare but potentially life-threatening. Because the larynx plays a central role in airway patency, phonation, and airway protection, disruption of its structural integrity can result in severe morbidity. Early diagnosis is critical; however, due to the rarity of this injury and the wide spectrum of clinical presentation, laryngeal trauma is frequently underrecognized. When identified, management must prioritize airway stabilization, followed by anatomic reconstruction to optimize long-term voice and swallow outcomes. Laryngeal fractures from penetrating trauma demand rap

Laryngeal cartilage is an exceptionally rare site of metastasis, with fewer than 63 cases reported in the literature; prostate, kidney, breast, and lung cancers are the most common primary tumors. In addition to this extreme rarity, most published reports are limited to descriptions of the lesion and radiologic findings, without detailing management strategies or follow-up outcomes. The limited number of studies exploring surgical intervention have primarily described superficial resections or conventional laryngectomies. In this context, this case report describes thyroid cartilage metastasis

We report a rare case of follicular lymphoma involving the supraglottic larynx in an elderly woman with progressive hoarseness and potential airway compromise. Microlaryngoscopic resection was performed before systemic staging. Histopathology showed grade 1-2 follicular lymphoma. Postoperative FDG PET/CT and a bone marrow biopsy revealed no nodal, visceral, or bone marrow involvement at diagnosis. Because the clonal relationship with previous cutaneous B-cell lymphoproliferative lesions could not be assessed, a primary laryngeal origin could not be established. Involved-site radiotherapy was p

BACKGROUND: Laryngeal cancer constitutes a major burden. Accurate staging is important to determine the optimal treatment approach. However, a head-to-head comparison of diagnostic performance between CT and MRI in patients with laryngeal cancer is lacking. Furthermore, the performance of CT and MRI in detecting the invasion of different laryngeal structures is yet to be determined.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the diagnostic performance of CT and MRI in patients with laryngeal cancer.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science in November 2025 for cohort studies that compared both ind
