Health effects of adverse childhood events: Identifying promising protective factors at the intersection of mental and physical well-being.

Research documents how exposure to adversity in childhood leads to negative health outcomes across the lifespan. Less is known about protective factors - aspects of the individual, family, and community that promote good health despite exposure to adversity. Guided by the Resilience Portfolio Model, this study examined protective factors associated with physical health in a sample of adolescents and adults exposed to high levels of adversity including child abuse. A rural community sample of 2565 individuals with average age of 30 participated in surveys via computer assisted software. Partici

Non-deployment factors affecting psychological wellbeing in military personnel: literature review.

BACKGROUND: Most military mental health research focuses on the impact of deployment-related stress; less is known about how everyday work-related factors affect wellbeing. AIMS: This systematic narrative literature review aimed to identify non-deployment-related factors contributing to the wellbeing of military personnel. METHOD: Electronic literature databases were searched and the findings of relevant studies were used to explore non-deployment-related risk and resilience factors. RESULTS: Fifty publications met the inclusion criteria. Determinants of non-deployment stress were identifie

Spousal Problems and Family-to-Work Conflict Among Employed US Adults.

Using data from the 2011 National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States Refreshed Sample (N = 980), this paper examines how three types of spousal problems-poor physical health, poor mental health, and behavioral disorders-are related to respondents' family-to-work conflict (FWC) among employed adults aged 25-61. Results suggest that all three types of their spouses' problems were related to respondents' higher FWC, with their spouses' poor mental health having the strongest association. These associations were not significant after controlling for respondents' role overload, fina

Contribution of working conditions to occupational inequalities in depressive symptoms: results from the national French SUMER survey.

OBJECTIVES: Social inequalities in mental health have been observed, but explanations are still lacking. The objectives were to evaluate the contribution of a large set of psychosocial work factors and other occupational exposures to social inequalities in mental health in a national representative sample of employees. METHODS: The sample from the cross-sectional national French survey SUMER 2010 included 46,962 employees: 26,883 men and 20,079 women. Anxiety and depression symptoms were measured using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale. Occupation was used as a marker of social positi

Predicting the onset of anxiety syndromes at 12 months in primary care attendees. The predictA-Spain study.

BACKGROUND: There are no risk algorithms for the onset of anxiety syndromes at 12 months in primary care. We aimed to develop and validate internally a risk algorithm to predict the onset of anxiety syndromes at 12 months. METHODS: A prospective cohort study with evaluations at baseline, 6 and 12 months. We measured 39 known risk factors and used multilevel logistic regression and inverse probability weighting to build the risk algorithm. Our main outcome was generalized anxiety, panic and other non-specific anxiety syndromes as measured by the Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders, Pat

Adverse psychosocial working conditions and poor quality of life among financial service employees in Brazil.

OBJECTIVES: Workers in the financial services sector are exposed to great stress at work. This study investigates whether exposure to adverse psychosocial work conditions is independently associated with poor health-related physical and mental quality of life among financial services workers. METHODS: We studied a nationwide representative sample of 2,054 workers of a large Brazilian state bank in 2008. Adverse psychosocial work conditions were investigated by the Effort-reward imbalance (ERI) scale and the Job content questionnaire (JCQ). Health-related quality of life (HRQL) was assessed us

Invited commentary: job strain and health behaviors--developing a bigger picture.

Investigation of the association between job stressors and health behaviors has a long history that has been marked by mixed findings. Fransson et al. (Am J Epidemiol. 2012;176(12):1078-1089) find robust prospective and cross-sectional associations between job strain and leisure-time physical inactivity in combined data from 14 cohort studies. Further research to better understand the observed heterogeneity in the contributing cohorts and other studies will be crucial for application to intervention design and tailoring. The population health significance of these findings requires considerati

Common mental disorders and subsequent work disability: a population-based Health 2000 Study.

BACKGROUND: Work disability due to common mental disorders has increased in Western countries during the past decade. The contribution of depressive, anxiety, and alcohol use disorders to all disability pensions at the population level is not known. METHODS: Epidemiological health data from the Finnish Health 2000 Study, gathered in 2000-2001, was linked to the national register on disability pensions granted due to the ICD-10 diagnoses up to December 2007. Mental health at baseline was assessed using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI). Sociodemographic, clinical, and wor

Redesigning assembly stations using ergonomic methods as a lean tool.

With the current state of the global economy, demand for various products plummeting. To sustain in the market, companies have to reduce cost and improve quality. Today, companies have started implementing new philosophies like TQM, TPM, six sigma and lean manufacturing techniques to remain competitive in the market. Lean manufacturing is an emerging philosophy which continuously strives to reduce waste. The main objective of analyzing the assembly line with a lean perspective is to identify the areas related to human interface with other systems that could lead to the generation of waste. Imp

Perceived competence in computer use as a moderator of musculoskeletal strain in VDU work: an ergonomics intervention case.

Musculoskeletal strain and other symptoms are common in visual display unit (VDU) work. Psychosocial factors are closely related to the outcome and experience of musculoskeletal strain. The user-computer relationship from the viewpoint of the quality of perceived competence in computer use was assessed as a psychosocial stress indicator. It was assumed that the perceived competence in computer use moderates the experience of musculoskeletal strain and the success of the ergonomics intervention. The participants (n = 124, female 58%, male 42%) worked with VDU for more than 4 h per week. They to

How common is repetitive strain injury?

OBJECTIVE: Statistics from Labour Force Surveys are widely quoted as evidence for the scale of occupational illness in Europe. However, occupational attribution depends on whether participants believe their health problem is caused or aggravated by work, and personal beliefs may be unreliable. The authors assessed the potential for error for work-associated arm pain. METHODS: A questionnaire was mailed [corrected] to working-aged adults, randomly chosen from five British general practices. They were asked about: occupational activities; mental health; self-rated health; arm pain; and beliefs

Job stress and other working conditions: Relationships with smoking behaviors in a representative sample of working Australians.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the relationships between current smoking status and psychosocial working conditions. METHODS: A cross-sectional population-based telephone survey was conducted (66% response rate, N = 1,101). Job stress was measured using the demand/control, effort/reward imbalance (ERI), and job pressure models. Multiple regression modelling was conducted for smoking status (current versus non-smokers, and a more restricted analysis of current versus former-smokers) and daily smoking intensity outcomes in relation to job stress measures, working hours, shift work, and other independent

Factors associated with early opioid prescription among workers with low back injuries.

UNLABELLED: Prescription of opioids for nonmalignant musculoskeletal pain has increased substantially in recent years, but there is little information on the incidence of, or factors associated with, such prescription for work-related back pain. In a prospective cohort study (N = 1,067), we examined associations between worker sociodemographic and other characteristics and opioid prescription within six weeks of the first medical visit for workers' compensation claims for work loss due to back injury. We examined administrative, pharmacy, and worker-reported data. In bivariate logistic regress

New mechanism of heart protection by angiotensin receptor blockers.

AIM OF THE STUDY: Newly approved therapies with high and uncertain budget impact pose challenges to public health care systems worldwide. One recent example is chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR-T) therapies for adults with large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL). This study's primary objective is to examine the expenditures of Swiss public payers before, during, and after CAR-T cell therapy in patients with LBCL aged ≥30 years. Its secondary objective is to analyse 24-month survival rates. METHODS: This retrospective observational data analysis used the administrative databases of the Swiss health i
