[Health effects of non-occupational exposure to asbestos].

Mesothelioma has occurred in a relative large number not only among miners but also among non-occupationally exposed persons living in the northwestern region of Cape State of South Africa, where crocidolite is mined and transported. The long-term residents of Thetford Mines in Quebec Province, Canada, who have never engaged in mining and milling of chrysolite have not shown an excess mortality of respiratory diseases. Tremolite in soil is responsible for mesothelioma among residents of certain geologic regions such as Cyprus, Corcica, northwestern Greece and Turkey. An increased prevalence of

[Evaluation of long-term occupational exposure to dust and its effect on health during production of ceramic tiles].

A medical examination has been carried out of 500 workers (290 men and 210 women) of a ceramic plates plant. Also, the measurements of dust concentrations were made at some standard work places . In the materials used for manufacturing the plates crystalline phases and the content of free crystalline silica were determined using the X-ray diffraction method. In the animal experiments the fibrogenic activity of all materials used in the plant was examined and compared to the fibrogenic activity of standard quartz. As a result of the medical examination 64 cases of pneumoconiosis were diagnosed

[Changes in the auditory threshold of workers exposed to the combined action of noise and local vibrations].

Study is performed on the effect of noise and local vibrations during a combined effect and independently on the auditory threshold for 4 kHz. The audiometric data of 1242 workers from the textile industry, coal- and ore production are analysed. On the basis of precise assessment of the noise level and occupational exposure to noise and local vibrations are formed 4 groups: exposed to independent noise effect with intensity 90 and 100 db (spinners and dressmakers); exposed to combined effect of noise (91 and 103 db) and local vibrations, surpassing the maximum admissible norms respectively 2.5

[Relationship between arterial pressure and exposure to noise at work].

BACKGROUND: Exposure to high levels of noise has been identified as a possible risk factor in the development of arterial hypertension. METHODS: With the aim of evaluating this possibility a transversal study was designed in that the results of routine medical examinations carried out on 806 workers from different sectors in the Community of Valencia were analyzed. Occupational exposure to noise in the subjects included in the sample were categorized according to the activity of the enterprise to which each employee belonged and the work post occupied by the same. RESULTS: No relation was fo

Carbon tetrachloride toxicity. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

Industrial carbon tetrachloride is used in the synthesis of chlorofluorocarbons and chlorinated solvents. Although both production and use of carbon tetrachloride are declining, industrial and hazardous waste sites remain as sources of exposure. Workers using carbon tetrachloride or products that contain it are at highest risk of exposure. Diabetics and persons who drink alcohol may have an increased risk of adverse effects following exposure to carbon tetrachloride. Acute exposure may result in rapid central nervous system depression. Symptoms of hepatic and renal toxicity may arise one to fo

Occupational hazards and pregnancy outcomes.

This study examined the association between exposure to occupational hazards and pregnancy outcomes using data from a case-control study conducted in 29 hospitals in Shanghai, China. The sample included 1,875 perinatal deaths and newborns with birth defects and the same number of controls. Information on mother's exposure to occupational radiation, chemicals, noise, and pesticides was investigated. Logistic regression analysis controlling for potential confounders showed that exposure to radiation before/during pregnancy was associated with antepartum fetal death, birth defects, small-for-gest

Use of "time windows" to investigate lung cancer latency intervals at an Ontario steel plant.

This paper describes an application of the time windows method to an examination of the temporal pattern of lung cancer risk among steel workers. Case-control methodology was utilized. The cases were 36 men who had died of lung cancer and the controls were 289 men who had died of any other cause. The number of years of employment in the steel pouring area was used as a surrogate measure of exposure. The data were examined by contingency table analysis and by logistic regression, which permitted adjustment for exposures in multiple time windows and the use of continuous, rather than categorical

Reproductive and developmental toxicity of toluene: a review.

Toluene is a widely used industrial solvent, and humans may also have high exposures to toluene from the deliberate inhalation ("sniffing") of paint reducer, paint thinner, or paint for their narcotic effects. A number of case reports describe neonatal effects that have been attributed to toluene abuse during pregnancy. These effects may include intrauterine growth retardation, premature delivery, congenital malformations, and postnatal developmental retardation. The possibility of exposures to other fetotoxic agents, either as impurities or admixtures in toluene-containing products, or by del

Complex mixtures in industrial workspaces: lessons for indoor air quality evaluations.

Acceptable occupational exposure levels for hundreds of airborne concentrations of dusts, vapors, fumes, and gases have been set by consensus organizations and regulatory bodies for decades. These levels have established tremendous precedent and are tempting reference values in the relatively new field of indoor air quality evaluations where validated criteria are greatly needed. The American Conference of Government Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) has been the most visible and productive group setting these guidelines for industrial exposure. The ACGIH Chemical Substances Committee has publishe

[The role of lead as a harmful factor in the manufacture of crystal products].

The article deals with research into dust contamination of crystal processing shops, and contains toxicological data related to different lead-containing dusts. It was established that the dust concentrations containing 51 to 66% silicon dioxide was higher in the crystal-cutting shops as compared with other shops. The content of lead in the dust in the composition and crystal processing shops was higher than that in the crystal-cutting shops. Toxicological express-analysis of different dusts performed on cell-cultures revealed that processing-induced crystal dusts were not as toxic as red lead

Fertility of workers chronically exposed to chemically contaminated sewer wastes.

Few studies have investigated the reproductive effects of exposure to chemical mixtures. The purpose of this study was to assess fertility in males exposed to mixed industrial and domestic wastes. A detailed reproductive history was obtained from the wives of 231 employees in order to evaluate fertility. Daily work records were used to define exposure status. To ascertain problems of infertility, the ratios of observed live births to expected live births (generated from U.S. birth probabilities) for exposed and nonexposed groups were calculated, and the ratios of these Standardized Fertility r

Benzene pollution from gasoline usage.

Local gasolines contain benzene ranging from 1.8 to 3.7% and their use can lead to significant exposure to benzene. Gasoline station attendants were found to be exposed to short-term exposure levels (STEL) of 0.064-179 ppm. Their 8-h time-weighted averaged (TWA) exposure ranged from 0.028 to 0.71 ppm. For motorcar service mechanics, TWA exposure levels ranged from 0.014 to 1.7 ppm. The exposure of drivers of gasoline delivery tankers ranged from 0.08 to 2.37 ppm for personal TWA exposure over the whole workshift. For local people not occupationally exposed to gasoline or other benzene-containi

[Nuclear medicine--personnel exposure and release of radioactivity].

The Nuclear Medicine Division and 30 other groups at the University of Hannover School of Medicine are taken as examples to describe the diagnostic, therapeutic and research uses of radioactivity and the effectiveness of the associated radiation protection. The evolution of radiation exposures of 520 employees followed over the last six years and the methods used for the disposal of radioactive waste are explained. The adaptation of protective measures to individual and, in particular, specific working conditions has led to approximately 90% of all exposures remaining under the detection limit

Evaluation of lung function in male population from vocational mining schools of the Lublin Coal Basin.

Occupational exposure to dust and other environmental factors in coal miners may impair the lung function of workers. Besides the coal workers' pneumoconiosis, the inhaled dust may cause decreased ventilatory capacity as a due to chronic bronchitis (9, 13). The same diseases, especially chronic bronchitis, are common in general population and may arise not only from occupational reasons (11, 12). The involvement of the genetic factors, environmental pollutions and cigarette smoking should be considered.

Father's occupational exposure to radiation and the raised level of childhood leukemia near the Sellafield nuclear plant.

The first indications that childhood leukemia rates may be raised near the Sellafield nuclear plant in West Cumbria, England, came from largely anecdotal evidence in a television program "Windscale: The Nuclear Laundry" shown during 1983. During subsequent years, various epidemiological studies have investigated the claim in more detail. Geographical analyses of childhood leukemia incidence in the northern region and mortality in England and Wales using routinely available data made the first contribution. As a result, it was confirmed that leukemia rates in the area, particularly the neighbor

Evaluation of skin cancer risk resulting from long term occupational exposure to radiation from ultraviolet lasers in the range from 190 to 400 nm.

The relative risk of occupational exposure to radiation from UV lasers was estimated using a mathematical model based on both epidemiological data and animal experiments. Calculations were performed for the 193 nm ArF excimer laser cornea shaping, the 308 nm XeCl excimer laser for coronary angioplasty, and other UV lasers in a laboratory environment. The model included the effects of direct exposure and exposure to scattered radiation. The results show that for the two medical applications the increase in the relative risk is comparable to that of one additional day of sunbathing per year. For

[The development of endogenous inner ear hearing loss due to occupational noise exposure].

Pure tone audiograms of 80 workmen with preexisting endogenous cochlear hearing loss were investigated over an average of 16 years (range 10 to 26) of occupational exposure to noise. Further hearing deterioration was moderate in the majority of cases more severe hearing losses more often affected the low tone range. The pure tone threshold 0.25 to 8 kHz remained unaltered in at least one ear in 24% of cases, in the high tone range 3 to 6 kHz in 51%. The average hearing loss was least at 3 kHz, followed by 4 kHz. The average hearing loss was somewhat greater in the initially better hearing ear.

Lung health consequences of reported accidental chlorine gas exposures among pulpmill workers.

The long-term consequences of accidental chlorine gas exposure have been investigated, mainly in the community setting, among persons exposed as a result of a nearby chlorine spill. This circumstance is not analogous to the more frequent chlorine or chlorine dioxide gas overexposures that occur commonly in pulpmills over a background of a low level of gas exposure. To investigate the respiratory health consequences of these accidental exposures ("chlorine gassing") in the industrial setting, we carried out a cross-sectional respiratory health survey among workers at a British Columbia coastal
