Occupational hepatitis caused by methylenedianiline.

Four of the six workmen who were engaged in laying an epoxy resin based floor developed an acute hepatic illness; in two of these men, the illness recurred on re-exposure a few months later, and their convalescence period was prolonged. It was concluded that methylenedianiline, which was used as the curing agent for the epoxy resin, was the likely hepatotoxin on the basis of marked similarities of these men's symptoms and signs to those described in other published reports about toxic exposure to this compound. To date, there is no evidence of long-term liver damage caused by this widely used

Sources of respiratory insult in the poultry processing industry.

Although the agricultural community has focused a great deal of attention on improving the overall health of poultry for production purposes, the health of poultry workers has, by comparison, received less direct attention. Recent studies suggest that poultry workers who come in direct contact with live birds may be at risk of pulmonary dysfunction, including the development of chronic respiratory diseases. Exposure of poultry workers to live birds results in potential pulmonary insult from a variety of allergenic and immunologic agents, as well as nuisance dust particles. In addition, marked

Biological monitoring of occupational exposure to nickel.

Biological monitoring and hygienic monitoring complement each other in assessing occupational exposure to nickel. Biological monitoring is mainly directed to following the exposure of individual workers. In order to estimate exposure from data on biological monitoring, the exposing agent, i.e., the chemical species of nickel involved must be known. Comparisons between exposures are most reliable when made under similar exposure conditions. In particular, when urine is monitored, contamination of the sample from the dust in the air, workers' clothes, and hands, is a major problem. The sampling

Symptoms, pulmonary function, and bronchial hyperreactivity in western red cedar workers compared with those in office workers.

An epidemiologic health study was carried out on 652 cedar mill workers and a control group of 440 male office workers not exposed to air contaminants. Participants completed a medical-occupational questionnaire with trained interviewers, had allergy skin tests, performed spirometry, and had bronchial reactivity assessed by methacholine inhalation testing. After adjusting for differences in age, race, and smoking, cedar workers were found to have significantly higher prevalences of cough, phlegm, and dyspnea than did office workers. Symptoms of asthma and work-related asthma, but not persisten

A mortality study of cement workers.

Occupational exposure to dust has been linked with excess mortality from stomach cancer. To examine this hypothesis in respect of cement workers the mortality of a group of men, identified as cement workers in 1939, was followed up from 1948 to 1981. An excess of mortality from stomach cancer was found which is not thought to be explained by the social class distribution of the study population. Mortality from respiratory disease was not increased.

Childhood cancer and occupational radiation exposure in parents.

To test the hypothesis that a parent's job exposure to radiation affects his or her child's risk of cancer, the authors compared this exposure during the year before the child's birth for parents of children with and without cancer. Parents of children with cancer were no more likely to have worked in occupations, industries, or combined occupations and industries with potential ionizing radiation exposure. Bone cancer and Wilms' tumor occurred more frequently among children of fathers in all industries with moderate potential ionizing radiation exposure. Children with cancer more often had fa

Personal exposure to volatile organic compounds. I. Direct measurements in breathing-zone air, drinking water, food, and exhaled breath.

A pilot study to test methods of estimating personal exposures to toxic substances and corresponding body burdens was carried out between July and December 1980. Individual exposures to about a dozen volatile organic compounds in air and drinking water were measured for nine volunteers in Bayonne and Elizabeth, New Jersey, and for three volunteers in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina during three 3-day visits over the 6-month period. Breath samples were also collected from all subjects on each visit. Composite food samples were collected in each locality. Sampling and analytical methods f

Human exposure to nickel.

In order of abundance in the earth's crust, nickel ranks as the 24th element and has been detected in different media in all parts of the biosphere. Thus, humans are constantly exposed to this ubiquitous element, though in variable amounts. The average natural nickel exposure from food in the past has probably been somewhat, but not much, below current levels. Nickel is a useful metal, particularly in various alloys, in batteries and in nickel-plating. Nickel compounds are used especially as catalysts and pigments. In nickel-producing or nickel-using industries, about 0.2% of the work force ma

Aetiological aspects on primary liver cancer with special regard to alcohol, organic solvents and acute intermittent porphyria--an epidemiological investigation.

Some environmental factors of possible aetiological importance for primary liver carcinoma (PLC) in males were analysed in a case-control study including 83 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), 15 cases of intrahepatic cholangiocellular carcinoma (CC), 3 cases of haemangiosarcoma and 1 case of unspecified sarcoma in the liver--102 cases in total. Two matched controls were used in each case. One case with haemangiosarcoma was exposed to polyvinyl chloride. The case with unspecified soft-tissue sarcoma was exposed to phenoxy acids. A 4-fold increase in the risk of HCC was seen in alcoholics,

Kepone: a chemical disaster in Hopewell, Virginia.

One of the most costly chemical disasters in the United States involved a small, single-product manufacturer, ironically named Life Science Products Company, which made the pesticide Kepone for Allied Chemical Corporation. Life Science operated only 16 months in 1974 and 1975, in Hopewell, Virginia, yet managed to poison its workers and pollute the environment, causing millions of dollars of damage. The case dramatically demonstrates the links between hazards inside the factory and those outside the factory, and the confused responses of both administrative and judicial systems to a chemical d

Home lead-work as a potential source of lead exposure for children.

Health examinations for lead poisoning were made on 62 family members from 15 families of homes carrying on lead work, such as quench-hardening in a molten lead bath and type-printing, as work at home. The most interesting findings concern the occurrence of cases with an unduly high lead absorption among children, but not among adult family members other than home lead-workers. The home environments of the children with an unduly high lead absorption represented contamination with housedust high in lead contents. The ingestion of the contaminated housedust by hand-to-mouth is probably responsi

Exposures to respirable, airborne Penicillium from a contaminated ventilation system: clinical, environmental and epidemiological aspects.

Symptoms compatible with hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) in two of fourteen employees in a clerical office prompted an investigation of their work environment. Forced-air heater-cooler units which had not been properly maintained were implicated when they were found to be grossly contaminated with predominantly Penicillium molds. Air-sampling for viable, respirable-size particulates in the affected office and an unaffected office in the same building demonstrated a 50- to 80-fold excess in the number of colony-forming-units per cubic meter of air in the affected office. Persistent alveolitis

Evaluation of both local exhaust and cycle purges to reduce operator exposure and environmental levels of ethylene oxide.

A local exhaust manifold was attached to two different tabletop ethylene oxide sterilizers. One tabletop sterilizer had a built-in cycle purge feature, while the other had the standard single terminal vacuum cycle. Operator exposure and environmental levels of ethylene oxide were determined with and without local exhaust, and with and without purge cycle. Results from both charcoal tube collection samples and infra-red analysis clearly demonstrated the benefit of a local exhaust coupled with cycle purge in reducing operator exposure to and environmental contamination by ethylene oxide to nearl

Critical considerations in the assessment of health and environmental risks - what we have learned from the nuclear experience.

The radiological experience has produced some sophisticated approaches to estimating the environmental risks of anthropogenic chemicals, based on well-validated models for both health effects and exposure assessment. As to exposure assessment, site- and situation-specific data must be acquired for quantitative predictions. However, the requirements for quantitative estimation are often overlooked, even with the radiological models. Metabolism or other chemical processes, also, may more profoundly alter a chemical contaminant than they would a radioelement. Suitably developed models provide use

Uses and selection of equipment for engineering control monitoring.

Control monitoring (continuous multipoint monitoring of workplace air) has been used in a number of industries to help control worker exposure to a wide variety of contaminants. Control problems were identified and effective control has been maintained by keeping workers and management aware of pollutant levels in the workplace. To be used effectively, the control monitoring system must be viewed as an integral part of workplace control. In this report, the general uses of control monitoring equipment are given, the factors to be considered in choosing equipment for control monitoring purposes

Occupational nitrosamine exposure. 1. Rubber and tyre industry.

To determine the role of N-nitrosamines in the known increased cancer risk of rubber workers, air concentrations of such carcinogens were measured by area sampling or personal monitoring in 19 factories. N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and N-nitrosomorpholine (NMOR) were found regularly, the air concentrations varying between 0.1 and 380 micrograms/m3 personal monitoring. The mean concentration was usually in the range of 1-10 micrograms/m3. Several other nitrosamines could be detected in certain production branches. In retail shops and storage rooms of tyres NDMA and NMOR were found. Most rubbe

[Epidemiologic cancer research--new aspects for health education and early detection?].

Effective prevention has in the first place to be based on the knowledge of causal factors. In preventive oncology difficulties arise from the fact that our knowledge of causal mechanisms is--with some exceptions--not sufficient to provide clear guidelines for preventive action. Furthermore, it seems beyond doubt that development of cancer is a multifactorial process in which individual disposition, age and exposure to carcinogens participate. Only exposure can be modified by preventive measures. Epidemiological analysis of available data suggests that the effect of environmental carcinogens s

Alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency: the clinical and physiological features of pulmonary emphysema in subjects homozygous for Pi type Z. A survey by the British Thoracic Association.

Hereditary deficiency of alpha 1 antitrypsin, the main serum inhibitor of proteolytic enzymes is associated with pulmonary emphysema of early onset. A multicentre survey of this disorder was started in 1976 and details of 166 subjects homozygous for the Z phenotype form the main body of this report. There were 126 index cases who were identified through chest clinics and 40 non-index cases who were identified through family studies. The index cases and many of the non-index cases had severe radiological and physiological abnormalities. A history of cigarette smoking had a significant effect up

An evaluation of several methods for assessing the effects of occupational exposure to radiation.

Several methods for the analysis of occupational radiation exposure data, including procedures based on Cox's proportional hazards model, are presented and evaluated. Issues of interest include the contribution of an external control, the effective handling of highly skewed exposure data, and the potential for detecting effects in populations occupationally exposed to radiation. Expressions for evaluating the power of various procedures are derived and applied to data from the Hanford population in order to determine power curves for detecting leukemia effects, with both additive and multiplic
