Noise exposure has been commonly regarded as the main hazard of occupational hearing loss. Recent studies indicate that several chemicals, including organic solvents have ototoxic effects. This study aimed at evaluating the hearing of workers exposed to both noise and a mixture of organic solvents at concentrations anticipated as safe. The study comprised three groups. The first one included 70 workers exposed to noise only, the second group consisted of 93 workers exposed to organic solvents and noise, and the control group included 59 individuals exposed to neither noise nor organic solvents

The aim of our meta-analysis is to evaluate the association between the modifications of the cardiovascular system and chronic exposure to noise in occupationally exposed subjects. We considered the articles published from 1950 to May 2008. Only 15 papers were conforming to the inclusion criteria identified for this meta-analysis. A total of 18,658 workers were divided in three groups according to the level of noise exposure as measured in the original studies (High Exposure, HE, Intermediate Exposure, IE, Low Exposure, LE). A preliminary evaluation of the type of data allowed for a classifica

BACKGROUND: Age and exposure to noise are among the factors that may cause hearing loss in adults. Both of these factors are considered additives once their combined effects can cause damage to the hair cells of the organ of Corti.
AIM: To verify whether the exposure to occupational noise is an important risk factor for hearing disorders in adults with ages between 50 to 70 years, besides the auditory deterioration caused by age.
METHOD: The audiograms of 71 men with ages ranging between 50 to 70 years were studied (cohort study), with the participants being divided in 2 groups (Group 1 with

Chronic exposure to industrial noise and its effects on biological systems. Occupational exposure to noise may result in health disorders. Our aim was to evaluate the effects of chronic exposure to high-intensity noise of textile industry cotton rooms on the adrenal morphology. The environmental noise of a cotton-mill room from a large textile factory of Northern Portugal was recorded and reproduced by an adopted electroacoustic setup in a sound-insulated animal room where the rats were housed. The sounds were reproduced at the original levels of approximately 92 dB, which was achieved by equa

BACKGROUND: Noise prevailing in the non-occupational environment, such as that experienced in disco or rock concerts may be dangerous to the condition of the human hearing organ. The existing methods for assessing the risk of hearing loss (e.g., specified in ISO 1999:1990) fails to consider the contribution of non-occupational noise to the overall noise exposure. The fact that there is no generally accepted method for assessing the contribution of individual exposures to non-occupational noise to be used in epidemiological studies is one of the reasons that the effect of the quoted ISO procedu

As there is a need now in modern, informative and objective methods of diagnosis of early changes in the acoustic analyzer of drivers exposed to intensive occupational noise. To develop such methods, we studied parameters of evoked otoacoustic emission with reference to age of the drivers and duration of occupational exposure to noise. We established characteristics of delayed evoked otoacoustic emission and evoked distortion product otoacoustic emission. These parameters can be used in occupational selection and certification of transport drivers as markers of initial signs of a negative nois

Italian law on occupational exposure to noise identify 87 dBA as ceiling exposure level and 80 dBA as action level; the respect of ceiling level can be achieved by using devices, as ear plugs, whose efficacy must be verified. We studied 8119 audiometric of workers exposed to noise between 80 and 87 dBA. The hearing level of those who use ear plugs is significantly better than who don't use. Different devices show different efficacy, but for all, in the exposure setting studied, the level of protection that is provided is enough safe for othological protection. The workers must be informed abou

Smoking and occupational exposure to noise are factors with independent predisposition to sensorineural hearing loss. This is a sinergistic and additive effect. Nevertheless, we have observed that withdrawal of smoking stops the progression on hearing loss in occupational groups with an acoustic exposition lesser than 80 dB SPL. Actually, there is not an unique ethiologic hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to noise is highly prevalent in the workplace, and an etiologic association with cardiovascular disease has been hypothesized. Although there is evidence of hypertension among noise-exposed workers, evidence of heart disease has been less conclusive.
METHODS: We identified a cohort of 27,464 blue-collar workers from 14 lumber mills in British Columbia who worked at least 1 year between 1950 and 1995 and who were followed up over the same period. Cumulative noise exposure was quantitatively assessed. Vital status was ascertained from the Canadian Mortality Database. We est

This study was aimed at assessing hearing status among workers exposed to urban noise during activities related to the co-ordination of vehicle traffic in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Six hundred and twenty-four workers were submitted to audiometry and answered a clinical questionnaire. The audiometry results were classified as either normal or suggestive of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). The prevalence of suspected NIHL was 28.5%, with a 95% confidence interval of 25.05-32.27%. In the multivariate analysis (logistic regression model), suspected NIHL was correlated with gender, age, city

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a series of surveys to evaluate occupational exposure to noise and potentially ototoxic chemical agents among members of a professional stock car racing team. Exposure assessments included site visits to the team's race shop and a worst-case scenario racetrack. During site visits to the race team's shop, area samples were collected to measure exposures to potentially ototoxic chemicals, including, organic compounds (typical of solvents), metals, and carbon monoxide (CO). Exposures to these chemicals were all below thei

The role of occupational exposure to noise as a hypertension risk factor has not been established sufficiently. The aim of the study is to evaluate whether chronic exposure to different levels of noise in two groups of pilots, operating with two types of aircraft, could be a risk for hypertension, what relevance the parameters (intensity, duration and type) of exposure can have and, lastly, whether there are any links between hearing impairment and hypertension. After excluding pilots with confounding factors, a study was made of 77 male pilots of turboprop planes (group A) and 224 male pilots

This study aims to evaluate the effect of occupational exposure to noise and organic solvents on hearing loss in the aviation industry. The study population comprised 542 male workers, who worked in avionics jobs in Kimhae, Korea, who kept records of work environment evaluations and medical examinations. The Cumulative Exposure Index (CEI) was constructed to assess the lifetime cumulative exposure of the workers, and pure tone audiometry (PTA) data of the workers from their biannual medical surveillance was used to assess hearing loss. The prevalence of hearing loss found in the group exposed

The aim of the research was to evaluate the risk for the health of the disco-goers related to no-professional exposition to noise produced by speakers of discos. The noise has been measured in the middle of a disco using a class 1 phonometer. The exposition level was calculated using the formula quoted in the D.Lgs 277/91 (Italian legislative decree) and the possible damage was calculated using the Casini's formula. The calculated daily exposition level was 99,1 dBA and the weekly exposition was 92.1 dBA. The results indicate that the hypacusia damage due to these expositions can be considered

BACKGROUND: When the ear is presented with two simultaneous pure tones, the cochlea produces intermodulation products called distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DP-OAEs). When cochlear function is affected by noise or ototoxic drugs, DP-OAEs decrease in amplitude or disappear. The aim of this study was to investigate whether DP-OAEs are a sensitive indicator of hearing loss in pilots, for whom flying time presumably correlates with exposure to steady noise.
METHODS: Subjects were 105 pilots, ages 25-44 yr, with flying times of 500-3500 hours. Pilots were divided into three groups accord

AIMS: To explore the interaction of smoking and occupational exposure to noise as risk factors for hearing difficulty in the general population.
METHODS: A questionnaire was mailed to 21 201 adults of working age, selected at random from the age-sex registers of 34 British general practices, and to 993 members of the armed services, randomly selected from pay records. Questions were asked about smoking habits, years spent in a noisy occupation, difficulty in hearing conversation, and wearing of a hearing aid. Associations of hearing difficulty with smoking habit were examined by logistic regr

BACKGROUND: Evidence has accumulated concerning the adverse effects of smoking on hearing acuity, but it is not clear whether smoking modifies the association between exposure to noise and hearing loss.
AIMS: To examine the synergistic effect of these variables on hearing.
METHODS: Data used were derived from periodic health examinations for 4624 steel company workers in Japan and included audiometry testing and information on smoking habits. Occupational exposure to noise was determined based on company records. Logistic regression was used to examine the dose-response association between s
