Ototoxic effects of occupational exposure to styrene and co-exposure to styrene and noise.

Ototoxicity of styrene and the synergistic action of styrene and noise have been shown in rats. The respective data in humans are scarce and equivocal. This study evaluated the effects of occupational exposure to styrene and combined exposures to styrene and noise on hearing. The study group, comprised of 290-yacht yard and plastic factory workers, was exposed to a mixture of organic solvents, having styrene as its main compound. The reference group, totaling 223 subjects, included (1) white-collar workers, exposed neither to solvents nor noise and (2) metal factory workers, exposed exclusivel

Occupational exposure to noise decreases otoacoustic emission efferent suppression.

With the discovery of otoacoustic emissions (OAEs), the efferent cochlear system has become accessible for investigation in humans. Recently, it has been suggested that contralateral sound activated OAE efferent suppression may provide an early indication of auditory damage due to exposure to noise. In this study, OAE efferent suppression in normally hearing subjects, occupationally exposed to noise, was compared with respective effects in healthy, non-exposed subjects. The noise-exposed group exhibited higher mean hearing thresholds at frequencies 4, 6 and 10 kHz (p < 0.01) and lower-level tr

The health of the workers in a rapidly developing country: effects of occupational exposure to noise and heat.

Occupational hygiene and safety have not been high on the agenda of industrial management in developing countries for a variety of reasons. This cross-sectional study was undertaken to assess the exposure to noise and heat, and to study the level of occupational hygiene practiced, at a foundry in a rapidly developing country (Dubai, United Arab Emirates). Audiometry, muscle cramps and visual acuity were measured in workers at a foundry and compared with the results from workers at a soft-drink bottling plant. Thermal stress, relative humidity, ventilation, illumination and noise levels were me

[Risk of noise-induced hearing loss in farm tractor operators].

Studies of noise at work site of tractor operators showed that this parameter exceeds allowable values. In order to evaluate the risk of hearing loss in this occupational group, noise-induced permanent threshold shift (NIPTS) values were determined. This parameter is a function of the audiometric frequency, duration of occupational exposure and noise exposure level (LEX,8 h). The procedure recommended by ISO-1999/1990 was used for calculations. The study covered two groups of operators: operators of ZM "Ursus" medium-power tractors (noise exposure level: LEX,8 h = 96.6 dB) and operators of hig

Duration of exposure to noise among farmers as an important factor of occupational risk.

Occupational exposure to noise is determined by the value of acoustic energy and the duration of exposure - a parameter which is especially important while considering exposure to noise among private farmers. In order to describe the duration of exposure to noise, time-schedule measurements were carried out of occupations performed by a selected group of 30 self-employed farmers during the whole year. Three calculated time values were analysed: mean total monthly time of exposure (t(t)); mean daily time of exposure (t(d)) and mean monthly time of daily exposure (t(m)). The results of the study

Echocardiographic evaluation in 485 aeronautical workers exposed to different noise environments.

INTRODUCTION: Vibroacoustic disease (VAD) is a heterogeneous and systemic entity, caused by long term (> or =10 yr) exposure to noise environments characterized by large pressure amplitude and low frequency (LPALF) (> or =90 dB SPL, < or = 500 Hz), and not explained by other possible etiologic agents. The goal of this study was to identify possible structural changes in hearts of men with suspected VAD. METHODS: A total of 485 men were divided into 3 noise groups: no noise exposure (< or =70 dB), n = 48 (Group I); moderate noise exposure, (>70dB and < 90 dB), n = 113 (Group II); and intense n

[The effect of occupational exposure to noise among tractor drivers: assessment based on 'noise threshold'].

The effects of occupational exposure to noise was analysed among operators of agricultural tractors (n = 172). The assessment was based on a parameter called 'noise immission level' (dose connected with the period of employment). The study showed that the correlation between hearing loss and noise immission dose was stronger than that between hearing loss and the period of employment. Equations of simple regression presented in this paper allow us to make a prognosis concerning the risk of occupational deafness and to develop the system of the prevention interventions. The results obtained ind

Measurements of click-evoked otoacoustic emission in industrial workers with noise-induced hearing loss.

Click-evoked otoacoustic emission (c-EOAE) was analysed in a group of 122 males (= 244 ears) occupationally exposed to industrial noise levels of 89-94 dB (A). The highest intensity of cochlear responses was observed at 1 and 2 kHz, while at the higher frequencies (3-4 kHz), c-EOAE spectrum was contracted proportionally to the level of the hearing loss and duration of occupational exposure to noise. If hearing loss in pure-tone audiometry exceeded 30 dB HL at 1 kHz and 40 dB at 2 and 4 kHz, c-EOAE was absent. The analysis of the relationship between c-EOAE spectrum and hearing threshold in pur

Evaluation of occupational exposure to noise from the hearing conservation point of view.

The paper presents the classification of noise according to its parameters (among others to the frequency range) to be considered as responsible for the potential hearing damage. Polish and international standards for various types of noise assessment at work places (including impulse noise) are discussed. Basic instruments for noise measurements are described. Finally, attention is paid to various methods used for the reduction of exposure to noise and to protect the hearing of workers.

Study of noise, hearing impairment and hypertension in Egypt.

This study included 295 workers of Assiut Generation Station (Upper Egypt). Two hundred and twenty-one of the workers were exposed to different levels of noise (80 to 107 dBA) and the remaining 74 were used as a control group. There were no significant differences in risk factors viz age, duration of work, body mass index, weight, height, smoking, and previous work as determined by a questionnaire. The relationship between occupational exposure to noise, the degree of hearing loss and hypertension was determined. The results showed that there were statistically significant differences between

Occupational exposure to noise and ototoxic organic solvents.

The objectives of this study were to review the literature on the effects of occupational exposure to organic solvents on the auditory system and to identify work settings in which exposure to these agents and to noise might occur. The criteria for selecting the chemicals were (a) evidence available that indicated that the chemicals may affect the auditory system and enhance noise effects, and (b) the ubiquity of their use. References to ototoxicity were noted for three proven neurotoxicants, i.e., carbon disulfide, toluene, and trichloroethylene, and for two probable human neurotoxicants--sty
