The Association of G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor (GPER) Polymorphisms with Ionizing Radiation Exposure in Healthcare Workers.

Background/Objectives: The G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) is known to interact with cellular stress responses and DNA damage pathways. Therefore, exposure to ionizing radiation may modulate the biological consequences of single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the GPR30 gene. This study aims to evaluate the association between GPER polymorphisms and radiation sensitivity. Methods: The study included 50 healthcare workers exposed to ionizing radiation and 36 healthy individuals with no known occupational exposure to radiation. Genomic DNA was isolated and PCR products were purified using

Low-Dose Ionizing Radiation and Thyroid Diseases and Functional Modifications in Exposed Workers: A Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives: With technological development, ionizing radiation has found applications in numerous occupations. However, the determination and quantification of the damage resulting from exposure to it remains rather unclear, along with the damage to particular organs. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the relationship between low-dose ionizing radiation (LDIR) in exposed workers and possible functional changes and cancer development in the thyroid gland. Methods: We included observational studies evidencing the correlation under study. Data extraction and analysis

Human health risk assessment of occupational exposure to NORMs using deterministic and Monte Carlo-based methods: a case study of artisanal gold mining areas.

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining is a critical livelihood for many in developing regions, yet it poses momentous environmental and health risks, principally through the release of naturally occurring radioactive materials. The study evaluates the annual effective dose received by artisans engaged in several mining activities at Itagunmodi and Iperindo in Osun State, Nigeria. The soil and rock samples were analysed for the activity concentrations of naturally occurring radionuclides (40K, 226Ra, and 232Th) using gamma spectrometry. These concentrations were then used to determine the annua

Mini C-Arm: Are the risks truly 'mini' to theatre practitioners?

The Mini C-Arm device is increasingly being used in orthopaedic and extremity surgeries, due to the understanding that it minimises radiation exposure and scatter radiation when compared to a conventional C-Arm. However, concerns persist when considering occupational exposure to individuals who routinely partake in procedures with this tool. Anaesthesia providers, surgeons, and scrub practitioners, in particular, are often positioned near the Mini C-Arm during these procedures and may be subject to multiple repetitive doses of radiation from a higher volume of cases. Unlike circulating staff t

Occupational exposure to radiation among health workers: Genome integrity and predictors of exposure.

The current study aimed to investigate genomic instabilities in healthcare workers who may experience varying levels of radiation exposure through various radiological procedures. It also sought to determine if factors related to the work environment and dosimeter reading could effectively explain the observed genomic instabilities. Utilizing the cytokinesis-block micronucleus assay (CBMN) on peripheral blood lymphocytes, we assessed a spectrum of genomic aberrations, including nucleoplasmic bridge (NPB), nuclear budding (NBUD), micronucleus (MN) formation, and total DNA damage (TDD). The stud

Fabrication of biosensor for the assessment of radon and lead levels in the blood.

This study aimed to develop and test a biosensor for detecting radioactive radon gas and lead ions in blood samples collected from donors in Iraq. The biosensor was made up of aptamer, acetic acid, malachite green, and TRIS-HAC, and results were measured using a fluorescence spectrophotometer. This study found that 222Rn in the blood varied between individuals, with higher levels in males and smokers, and the highest concentration found in a male patient with cancer. The biosensor used to detect 222Rn in the blood was effective, sensitive, and low-cost, and the levels detected were within the

Radiation health hazard and risks assessment among greenhouse farmers in Egypt, seasonal study.

OBJECTIVES: Greenhouses have been rapidly developing in Egypt in the recent years so as to overcome the problem of water shortage required for agriculture because agriculture in protected houses provides about 20-40% of the water consumption from agriculture in open lands. Greenhouses are widely used to cultivate different kinds of plants. Greenhouses are considered spacious, enclosed areas, in close contact with airtight and soil. They have been the main radon source for a long time. Radon and its progeny are released and trapped in the vacant space of greenhouses, causing health hazards for

Organ dose reconstruction for the radiation epidemiological study of Korean radiation workers: the first dose evaluation for the Korean Radiation Worker Study (KRWS).

The Korea Institute of Radiological and Medical Sciences has started a radiation epidemiological study, titled "Korean Radiation Worker Study," to evaluate the health effects of occupational exposure to radiation. As a part of this study, we investigated the methodologies and results of reconstructing organ-specific absorbed doses based on personal dose equivalent, Hp(10), reported from 1984 to 2019 for 20,605 Korean radiation workers. For the organ dose reconstruction, representative exposure scenarios (i.e., radiation energy and exposure geometry) were first determined according to occupatio

Investigating Patient-Level Radiation Exposure in Hand and Wrist Fracture Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Although occupational exposure to radiation has been previously studied in the hand surgery literature, there is a paucity of studies looking at radiation exposure to the patient during fluoroscopy-guided hand surgery. We aimed to describe the level of radiation experienced by patients undergoing common hand and wrist fracture fixation and to identify risk factors for increased radiation exposure. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of patients at a single institution who underwent fracture fixation of the hand, wrist, or forearm requiring mini c-arm fluoroscopic guidance

The effects of ionizing radiation on domestic dogs: a review of the atomic bomb testing era.

Dogs were frequently employed as laboratory subjects during the era of atomic bomb testing (1950-1980), particularly in studies used to generate predictive data regarding the expected effects of accidental human occupational exposure to radiation. The bulk of these studies were only partly reported in the primary literature, despite providing vital information regarding the effects of radiation exposure on a model mammalian species. Herein we review this literature and summarize the biological effects in relation to the isotopes used and the method of radionuclide exposure. Overall, these stud

ProZES: the methodology and software tool for assessment of assigned share of radiation in probability of cancer occurrence.

ProZES is a software tool for estimating the probability that a given cancer was caused by preceding exposure to ionising radiation. ProZES calculates this probability, the assigned share, for solid cancers and hematopoietic malignant diseases, in cases of exposures to low-LET radiation, and for lung cancer in cases of exposure to radon. User-specified inputs include birth year, sex, type of diagnosed cancer, age at diagnosis, radiation exposure history and characteristics, and smoking behaviour for lung cancer. Cancer risk models are an essential part of ProZES. Linking disease and exposure t

A unique high natural background radiation area - Dose assessment and perspectives.

The biological effects of low dose-rate radiation exposures on humans remains unknown. In fact, the Japanese nation still struggles with this issue after the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. Recently, we have found a unique area in Indonesia where naturally high radiation levels are present, resulting in chronic low dose-rate radiation exposures. We aimed to estimate the comprehensive dose due to internal and external exposures at the particularly high natural radiation area, and to discuss the enhancement mechanism of radon. A car-borne survey was conducted to estimate the ext

Risk of Leukemia Associated with Protracted Low-Dose Radiation Exposure: Updated Results from the National Registry for Radiation Workers Study.

While the link between risk of leukemia and acute radiation exposure is well established for large doses received acutely, uncertainty remains around the translation of these risk estimates to occupational exposure scenarios where the doses are low and accumulated over time, possibly over many years. We present leukemia incidence and mortality radiation risk estimates derived from the National Registry for Radiation Workers, which is a large cohort of occupationally exposed workers from the United Kingdom (UK). The cohort comprised 173,081 workers from the UK who were monitored for occupationa

The Relationship Between Occupational Exposure to Low-dose Ionizing Radiation and Changes in Thyroid Hormones in Hospital Workers.

BACKGROUND: The effects of ionized radiation on the thyroid have been extensively studied. However, most studies have focused on high-dose radiation received accidentally or through therapy, and few were on low-dose occupational exposure. METHODS: Using a retrospective cohort study design, we collected health examination reports from employees who worked on jobs with occupational exposure to radiation at a hospital to evaluate possible changes in the serum thyroid hormones and determine whether there is a dose-response effect. After excluding those with diseases that may affect thyroid functi

CALCULATIONS OF SHUTDOWN DOSE RATE FOR THE TPR SPECTROMETER OF THE HIGH-RESOLUTION NEUTRON SPECTROMETER FOR ITER.

This work presents results of the calculations performed in order to predict the neutron-induced activity in structural materials that are considered to be using at the TPR spectrometer-one of the detection system of the High-Resolution Neutron Spectrometer for ITER. An attempt has been made to estimate the shutdown dose rates in a Cuboid #1 and to check if they satisfy ICRP regulatory requirements for occupational exposure to radiation and ITER nuclear safety regulations for areas with personal access. The results were obtained by the MCNP and FISPACT-II calculations.

Effect of Residential Radon Decay Product Dose Factor Variability on Reporting of Dose.

Guidelines for occupational exposure to radiation are based on annual absorbed or effective dose. Guidelines for Rn exposure are currently based on air concentrations of Rn or decay products. Models of bronchial dose from decay product exposure are based on calculations that have five major parameters with parameter variabilities ranging from 20 to 50%. Many countries currently use the ICRP dose conversion convention, which is a ratio of lifetime Rn lung cancer risk to lifetime atomic bomb dose risk. The results of ongoing epidemiology changed both lifetime risk values, and the dose conversion

Occupational radiation exposure to nursing staff during cardiovascular fluoroscopic procedures: A review of the literature.

Fluoroscopy is a method used to provide real time x-ray imaging of the body during medical procedures to assist with medical diagnosis and treatment. Recent technological advances have seen an increase in the number of fluoroscopic examinations being performed. Nurses are an integral part of the team conducting fluoroscopic investigations and are often located close to the patient resulting in an occupational exposure to radiation. The purpose of this review was to examine recent literature which investigates occupational exposure received by nursing staff during cardiovascular fluoroscopic pr
