Analysis of chromosome damage in circulating lymphocytes of radiological workers affected by thyroid nodules.

The aim of our study was to assess whether or not thyroid nodularity in combination with occupational exposure to low levels of ionising radiation would be correlated with chromosome damage in peripheral lymphocytes. Conventional chromosome-aberration analysis was performed on a group of 92 hospital workers with or without thyroid nodules. On the basis of measurements of their exposure levels, the workers were classified into a low (mean total level=0.03 mSv), medium (mean total level=1.04 mSv) or high (mean total level=8.60 mSv) exposure category. Our results indicate that among workers with

Thyroid disorders in employees of a nuclear power plant.

BACKGROUND: The thyroid gland is a potential target organ for radiation-related damage. The aim of this analysis was to investigate the association between occupational exposure to ionizing radiation and the risk of autoimmune thyroid disease as well as thyroid nodules and dysfunction in workers of a former nuclear power station. METHODS: Seventy-one male power station workers 38 to 57 years of age who had been exposed to a lifetime dose in the upper allowed range (accumulated lifetime dose 70 to 400 mSv) were compared to a population-based sample of 670 males who were not exposed to occupati

[Occupational exposure to radiation].

Since the discovery of X-rays , overexposures and radiation injuries have been reported in both patients and persons exposed in the course of their professional duties. Each year, more than 2,500 million diagnostic radiological examinations, 32 million nuclear medicine examinations or treatment procedures and 5.5 million radiotherapy sessions are performed worldwide. Despite all precautions, avoidable incidents and accidents occur throughout the world every year , albeit with low frequency. Whereas diagnostic radiology is generally safe for patients and staff, interventional procedures (e.g. c

Mortality of british radiologists: a lecture note.

The precautions introduced after the first 23 years experience of the use of x-rays for medical diagnosis proved adequate to eliminate the acute hazards of exposure, but it was much longer before it was realized that small doses that did not produce any acute effect could increase the risk of cancer. British radiologists who took up the specialty at different periods have, therefore, been studied to see if the risk has now been adequately controlled. Four groups have been studied starting respectively before 1921, in 1921-34, 1935-54, and 1955-77, corresponding approximately to periods when di

Prevalence of thyroid nodules in an occupationally radiation exposed group: a cross sectional study in an area with mild iodine deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer occur more frequently in people exposed to radiation for therapeutic purposes, and to nuclear fallout. Furthermore, it is known that a moderate degree of iodine deficiency may be responsible for an increased prevalence of thyroid nodules, while it is suspected that radiation exposure could induce changes in thyroid autoimmunity. The iodine intake of people resident in Bari, S. Italy, is mildly deficient, which could be presumed to cause a higher prevalence of thyroid pathology. This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of thyroid nodules

Epithelioid Angiosarcoma of the Small Intestine After Occupational Exposure to Radiation and Polyvinyl Chloride: A case Report and Review of Literature.

Angiosarcomas represent 1-2% of soft tissue sarcomas and most frequently occur in the subcutis. They may affect internal organs, such as the heart, liver, and spleen, and only rarely do they emerge in the gastrointestinal tract. The association between angiosarcomas and certain toxic chemical substances or previous external-beam radiation therapy is well documented.

Frequency of micronuclei in peripheral blood lymphocytes from subjects occupationally exposed to low levels of ionizing radiation.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the genotoxic effect of low dose of occupational radiation exposure in Nuclear Medicine Department employees, by using cytokinesis-blocked micronucleus assay in peripheral blood lymphocytes. The study included 46 exposed individuals together with 27 from the same area without occupational exposure to radiation which served as controls. The results obtained were evaluated with respect to age, gender, smoking habits, pathological condition and the occupational exposure to radiation of the individuals. The frequency of micronuclei increased significantly with

Paternal preconceptional irradiation, population mixing and solid tumors in the children of radiation workers (England).

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether there was an increased incidence of solid tumors among offspring of male radiation workers at the Sellafield nuclear installation in Cumbria, northwest England and whether paternal preconceptional irradiation was associated with the risk of solid tumors. METHODS: A cohort study of 266,710 live births in Cumbria, 1950-1991, followed up to age 25 years on the end of 1991. RESULTS: Children of radiation workers had a non-significantly increased risk of solid tumors (RR= 1.5, 95% CI: 0.9-2.4, p = 0.09), determined largely by an increased risk of cancers excludin

An evaluation of the ethical principles of the ICRP's radiation protection standards for workers.

After reviewing international recommendations and national standards for occupational radiation exposures, the article summarizes the major ethical theories so as to analyze which theories various ICRP principles presuppose. It also shows how proponents of each ethical theory would support or criticize various radiation principles and practices. Finally the article discusses four ethical issues crucial to the debate over workplace standards for radiation: (1) how to respond to the uncertainty over effects of low-dose exposures; (2) the conditions under which worker consent legitimates higher e

The Spanish National Dose Registry and Spanish radiation passbooks.

The Spanish National Dose Registry (BDN) is the Nuclear Safety Council's (CSN) national database of occupational exposure to radiation. Each month BDN receives records of individual external doses from approved dosimetry services. The dose records include information regarding the occupational activities of exposed workers. The dose information and the statistical analysis prepared by the BDN are a useful tool for effective operational protection of occupationally exposed workers and a support for the CSN in the development and application of the ALARA principle. The Spanish radiation passbook

Radiation litigation and the nuclear industry--the experience in the United Kingdom.

In the United Kingdom, the Nuclear Installations Act 1965 places a "strict" statutory duty on the operators of nuclear facilities to ensure that any exposure to radiation resulting from operations does not cause injury or damage. A claimant does not have to prove fault to receive compensation under the Act, only causation. The 1965 Act has been fundamental in shaping litigation involving the nuclear industry in the UK. Civil law cases brought under the Act will be heard before a single judge (with no jury or technical assessor) who must present his or her decision in a reasoned judgment. This

Radiation exposure during air travel: guidance provided by the Federal Aviation Administration for air carrier crews.

Air carrier crews are occupationally exposed to ionizing radiation, principally from galactic cosmic radiation. To promote radiation safety in aviation the Federal Aviation Administration has: issued educational material on the nature of the radiation received during air travel; recommended radiation exposure limits for pregnant and nonpregnant aircrew members; developed computer programs that estimate for a given flight profile the amount of galactic radiation received on a current flight or on one flown at any time back to January 1958; published tables that enable aircrew members to estimat

Radiation protection concepts and quantities for the occupational exposure to cosmic radiation.

For the purposes of dose limitation and dose control, the harm, or detriment, of exposure to radiation is assessed by the quantity effective dose. Effective dose is evaluated by the application of factors to the averaged absorbed dose in the organs and tissues of the body. Radiation monitoring instruments are generally calibrated in terms of the quantity ambient dose equivalent which is defined in a simple spherical phantom. The relationship of these quantities is described. Requirements for the radiation protection of aircraft crew are given in the European Union Council Directive 96/29/EURAT

Environmental factors and the risk of salivary gland cancer.

Cancer of the major salivary glands is rare, and little is known about its etiology. We conducted a population-based case-control study to elucidate the risk factors for these tumors. Of 199 cases diagnosed with salivary gland tumors between 1989 and 1993, 150 (75%) were interviewed. We subsequently excluded nine cases based on review of pathology specimens. We identified 271 controls through random-digit dialing and the Health Care Finance Administration files; 191 (70%) were interviewed. Therapeutic medical radiation treatment to the head or neck [odds ratio (OR) = 2.6; 95% confidence interv

Occupational x-ray exposure of anaesthetists.

Lithium fluoride thermoluminescent dosimeter chips were used to measure the radiation dose received by anaesthetists caused by the use of image intensification during a typical 4-week period in an orthopaedic theatre. These were used to estimate an annual dose, for comparison with dose limits, to ascertain if anaesthetists should be included in personnel monitoring services. Doses proved to be below detectable limits; hence anaesthetists are at minimal risk from occupational exposure to radiation. The orthopaedic theatre is believed to use more x-rays than other theatres, so exposure elsewhere

Occupational exposure to radiation induces an adaptive response in human lymphocytes.

The in vitro pretreatment of phytohaemagglutinin stimulated human lymphocytes with tritiated thymidine or with low doses of X-rays induces a response that makes these cells less susceptible to further genetic damage induced by subsequent high doses of radiation. This phenomenon has been called 'Adaptive Response' because it is similar to the one described in E. coli. In the present study, we describe that lymphocytes irradiated in vitro at 2 Gy, from individuals occupationally exposed to X and gamma rays, show lower frequencies of dicentrics than those from non-occupationally exposed individua

Trace metal levels of X-ray technicians' blood and hair.

Medical X-ray technicians are exposed to low-level ionizing radiation in their occupational field. There are very few data on low-dose radiation effects. The present study was designed to estimate few vital trace metals (Zn, Cu, Fe) in indicator tissues (blood and hair) of X-ray technicians and non-X-ray technicians (hospital employees were used as controls) by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). This analysis noted a significant increase in Zn, Cu, and Fe concentrations in X-ray technicians' hair. But in blood, Zn and Cu were depleted, whereas Fe was increased. Such changes in trace metal c
