Father's occupational exposure to radiation and the raised level of childhood leukemia near the Sellafield nuclear plant.

The first indications that childhood leukemia rates may be raised near the Sellafield nuclear plant in West Cumbria, England, came from largely anecdotal evidence in a television program "Windscale: The Nuclear Laundry" shown during 1983. During subsequent years, various epidemiological studies have investigated the claim in more detail. Geographical analyses of childhood leukemia incidence in the northern region and mortality in England and Wales using routinely available data made the first contribution. As a result, it was confirmed that leukemia rates in the area, particularly the neighbor

Evaluation of skin cancer risk resulting from long term occupational exposure to radiation from ultraviolet lasers in the range from 190 to 400 nm.

The relative risk of occupational exposure to radiation from UV lasers was estimated using a mathematical model based on both epidemiological data and animal experiments. Calculations were performed for the 193 nm ArF excimer laser cornea shaping, the 308 nm XeCl excimer laser for coronary angioplasty, and other UV lasers in a laboratory environment. The model included the effects of direct exposure and exposure to scattered radiation. The results show that for the two medical applications the increase in the relative risk is comparable to that of one additional day of sunbathing per year. For

Acute leukaemia with t(4;11) in patients previously exposed to carcinogens.

We report three cases of acute leukaemia with t(4;11) (q21;q23), one of them of undifferentiated and the other two of lymphoid phenotype, occurring after adjuvant radiochemotherapy for breast cancer (two cases) or occupational exposure to radiation (one case). Although the myeloid phenotype and characteristic chromosomal anomalies usually observed in secondary leukaemia were lacking, our observations raise the possibility of causal relationship between exposure to carcinogens and the occurrence of a leukaemia with t(4;11).

Industrial risk perceptions.

The risks of occupational exposure to radiation need fuller and more explicit characterization. They also need a more developed quantitative comparison with more familiar occupational hazards. To achieve this, some criterion is needed for establishing the amount of detriment one should attribute to different harmful effects, e.g., from accidents at work which cause death, temporary or permanent disability; from fatal and nonfatal cancers; from developmental abnormalities and any likely nonstochastic effects; and from a range of genetic defects. No such criterion for comparing incommensurable k

CNS cancers and radiation exposure: a case-control study among workers at two nuclear facilities.

A nested case-control study was conducted among workers employed in two nuclear facilities to investigate the possible association of primary CNS cancers with occupational exposure to radiation from external and internal sources. External radiation monitoring data from film badges were available for 27 cases and 90 matched controls. The radiation dose to the lung from internally deposited uranium was estimated for 47 cases and 120 matched controls from area and personnel monitoring data and was used in analyses in lieu of the brain dose. No association was observed between deaths from CNS canc

Childhood cancer and occupational radiation exposure in parents.

To test the hypothesis that a parent's job exposure to radiation affects his or her child's risk of cancer, the authors compared this exposure during the year before the child's birth for parents of children with and without cancer. Parents of children with cancer were no more likely to have worked in occupations, industries, or combined occupations and industries with potential ionizing radiation exposure. Bone cancer and Wilms' tumor occurred more frequently among children of fathers in all industries with moderate potential ionizing radiation exposure. Children with cancer more often had fa

An evaluation of several methods for assessing the effects of occupational exposure to radiation.

Several methods for the analysis of occupational radiation exposure data, including procedures based on Cox's proportional hazards model, are presented and evaluated. Issues of interest include the contribution of an external control, the effective handling of highly skewed exposure data, and the potential for detecting effects in populations occupationally exposed to radiation. Expressions for evaluating the power of various procedures are derived and applied to data from the Hanford population in order to determine power curves for detecting leukemia effects, with both additive and multiplic

[Incidence of the 9qh+ variant in subjects with occupational exposure to radiation and in cases of reproductive pathology].

The frequency of the 9qh+ variant was fond to be significantly increased (as compared to controls) in the following classes of subjects: R)professionally radioexposed individuals; P)patients with chromosomal aberrations; PP)parents of P; Cs)sterile or pluriabortive couples. While the increase of 9qh+ in P and PP individuals was already known, the findings in professionally radioexposed individuals and sterile or pluriabortive couples appear to be relatively new. Occurrence of 9qh+ might prove to be a useful indicator of chromosomal damage, while confirmation of these findings would entail stri

Occupational exposure to radiation as a cancer hazard.

There is much experimental data which indicates that ionizing radiation is a very potent carcinogenic agent. Most types of carcinoma can be produced by radiation. Carcinoma is apparently induced through a single or a series of mutations in somatic cells. Radiologists have excess leukemia and other malignancy from external x-ray; uranium and other miners have excess lung cancer from internal alpha radiation; luminous dial painters have excess osteogenic sarcomas; and uranium mill workers appear to have excess lymphomas. A large number of persons are now exposed occupationally to radiation from
