Contamination of firefighters' merino wool and mixed fibre sweater and hood undergarments with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

BACKGROUND: Several authors have studied contamination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) found on the outer gears of firefighters, but to our knowledge, none have investigated merino wool and mixed fibre undergarments used underneath the protective turnout gear. We therefore performed a comprehensive study regarding selected PAHs in pieces cut out from different areas of firefighter's sweaters and hood used in real fires and laundered after each use. METHOD: Hoods (38) and sweaters (58) were donated by 3 fire departments and from these garments 558 pieces of fabric were cut out. Extr

Microplastic Contamination: A Rising Environmental Crisis With Potential Oncogenic Implications.

Microplastics have emerged as pervasive environmental contaminants detected in air, water, food, and even human tissues such as blood and placenta. These particles are now recognized as potential health hazards to humans. Due to their high surface area and ability to adsorb toxic substances, microplastics can act as vectors for heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants, many of which are established carcinogens. Evidence from animal models links microplastic exposure to oxidative stress, inflammation, immune disruption, and tissue damage, mechanisms implicated in cancer pathogenesis. Alth

Assessing carcinogenic and mutagenic hazards in firefighting: a comprehensive review.

This review aims to critically assess the carcinogenic and mutagenic risks associated with firefighting, with a focus on cancer incidence, cancer mortality and other chronic health outcomes. Firefighting is widely recognized as a high-risk occupation due to repeated exposure to hazardous substances, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other combustion by-products. An extensive review of empirical studies, meta-analyses, and institutional reports was conducted, considering not only direct fireground exposure but also risks arising from contaminated personal protective equipmen

Relationship between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons measured in dust collected inside cars and from ambient air.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are organic compounds with a high capacity for bioaccumulation and carcinogenic and mutagenic effects on human health. They can exist in both outdoor and indoor air. Indoors, except in the air, they can be bound to dust particles, and human intake occurs not only by inhalation but also by ingestion and dermal absorption of dust. Therefore, dust is an important source of human exposure to indoor carcinogenic contaminants. The aim of this research was to determine the contribution of individual PAHs in the total amounts of PAHs (ΣPAH) in dust collected ins

A Review of Contamination Status and Health Risk Assessment of Volatile Methylsiloxanes in Environmental Matrices.

Volatile methylsiloxanes (VMS) are a group of synthetic chemical compounds broadly used in industrial applications and consumer products, leading to a sharply increased global emission through diverse pathways. Consequently, human exposure to VMS through inhalation or other routes poses potential health risks. To provide insights for environmental contamination by VMS and its concerning health risks, a systematic literature search was conducted in online databases, including the Web of Science, PubMed, Elsevier ScienceDirect, and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure. This review analyze

Airborne lead exposures during artisanal lead mining and gold ore processing in Zamfara, Nigeria.

Artisanal mining in Nigeria is growing along with the increase in the price of metals. However, self-employed miners, particularly in the northwest of the country, have brought extensive environmental contamination and severe lead poisoning from the lead content in the ore. This study assessed airborne lead exposures to miners during lead mining and gold ore processing in three villages in Zamfara State, Nigeria. Personal air samples were collected and analyzed for lead content. Gold processing operations were classified by task, including: manual mortar and pestle grinding, hammer crushing, a

An overview of benzene contamination in the second-largest metropolis in Southeastern Brazil.

Benzene is a highly volatile monoaromatic hydrocarbon and genotoxic carcinogen. In Brazil, it is considered a priority for the National Health System. However, although this compound is targeted by health surveillance in Brazil, scarce data are available on occupational or environmental exposure. This review contributes to an overview regarding benzene levels in the second-largest metropolis in Southeastern Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, and associated risks. A decreasing trend has been noted in the city of Rio de Janeiro, in the last decades, due to more stringent vehicular emission legislations and

"Fusion of Horizons": Part III. Rethinking radon Risk: Scientific advances and regulatory implications (since 1990s).

This study examines the global evolution of scientific understanding regarding radon exposure and its health implications, focusing on the transition from early occupational exposure limits and epidemiological risk assessments to molecular-level attributions of radon-induced diseases. Since the early 1990s, advancements in genetic and molecular research have provided growing evidence suggesting that radon exposure may leave a distinct oncological signature, potentially allowing for more precise differentiation between radon-induced lung cancers and those caused by other factors. While this fie

Fomite workshop recommendations addressing the role of surfaces in virus transmission in the built environment.

The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 has led to a need to assess the role of fomites in viral transmission within the built environment. Assessing the role of fomites is necessary for developing intervention strategies for controlling emerging pathogens. A fomite workshop with experts was convened in November 2024 by academia, several government agencies, and public health officials to evaluate existing data and discuss how to mitigate risks. Fomite transmission is influenced by the nature of the built environment, population density and proximity, environmental factors (humidity, heat, etc.), virus su

Association of pre-and postnatal mercury exposure with cardiometabolic risk factors in children: the role of the telomere length and telomerase reverse transcriptase polymorphisms.

Mercury (Hg), particularly methylmercury (MeHg), is a widespread environmental toxicant linked to early-life cardiometabolic risk. This study examined associations between pre- and postnatal total blood mercury (THg) exposure and cardiometabolic outcomes in children, exploring telomere length (TL) as a potential mediator and polymorphisms in the TERT and CLPTM1L genes as effect modifiers. The analysis included 1,301 mother-child pairs from six European cohorts in the HELIX project. THg was measured in maternal and child blood to assess prenatal and postnatal exposure. Cardiometabolic outcomes,

Air emissions & firewater runoff contamination from lithium-ion battery fires in rubbish trucks.

The increasing presence of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries in municipal waste streams poses growing challenges for safe waste management. This study aimed to characterise airborne emissions and firewater runoff contaminants generated during battery fire suppression activities. Controlled fire trials were conducted at a specialised facility using a rubbish truck filled with representative waste and various Li-ion batteries (3.7-40 V). Airborne emissions were sampled before and after extinguishment at multiple locations, and firewater runoff was collected following suppression activities. The res

Key role of extracellular vesicles in the induction of necroptosis and apoptosis by a mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the context of a steatohepatitis-like state.

A positive association between human exposure to environmental pollutants and progression from benign hepatic steatosis to advanced chronic liver diseases has been documented. Among chemicals found in air pollution, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are of particular concern, due to their omnipresence in the environment. Ingestion of contaminated food is the primary route of exposure. Previous studies on the ability of PAHs to induce the pathological progression of liver steatosis have been limited to the analysis of individual PAHs. The aim of this study was therefore to examine the eff

Effects of microplastics and nanoplastics on the kidney and cardiovascular system.

Microplastics and nanoplastics are ubiquitous environmental pollutants that contaminate air, food and water supplies, resulting in widespread human exposure and potential health risks. Varying concentrations of particulate plastics have been identified in human tissues and body fluids, including the heart, kidney, liver, brain, blood and urine. Studies in animal models and human cells have reported that particulate plastics can induce oxidative stress, cell death and inflammation as well as disrupt metabolism and immune function. They have also been shown to have toxic effects on kidney and ca

Fungal Colonization of the Airways of Patients with Cystic Fibrosis: the Role of the Environmental Reservoirs.

Filamentous fungi frequently colonize the airways of patients with cystic fibrosis and may cause severe diseases, such as the allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis. The most common filamentous fungi capable to chronically colonize the respiratory tract of the patients are Aspergillus fumigatus and Scedosporium species. Defining the treatment strategy may be challenging, the number of available drugs being limited and some of the causative agents being multiresistant microorganisms. The knowledge of the fungal niches in the outdoor and indoor environment is needed for understanding the origin

Preliminary analyses of accumulation of carcinogenic contaminants on retired firefighter ensembles.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is designed to protect firefighters from hazards encountered on the fire scene, including heat and products of combustion. Decontamination practices for firefighter turnout gear have been developed to remove combustion products and other contaminants from the fabric of structural firefighting ensembles (i.e., turnout or bunker gear). Chronic exposures to residual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are a contributing cause of firefighter cancers. To identify and quantify residual contamination of PAH, samples were taken from two individual decommissioned

A comparative study on the effectiveness of pollutants control measures adopted in the steel industry to reduce workplace and environmental exposure: a case study.

Our understanding of the environmental and occupational health implications of pollutants emitted in steel production is still lacking, despite the considerable amount of research devoted to this topic. Given the significance of steel recycling and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, many steel factories are adopting electric arc furnace (EAF) technology. The use of a technological system designed for the capture of pollutants emitted through EAF steel production is highly ecological because of its utilization of iron scrap and low investment cost. Despite this, the main issue with th

An introduction to environmental neurotoxicology: Lessons from a clinical perspective.

In 1992, the Committee on Neurotoxicology and Models for Assessing Risk of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington DC focused with a scientific perspective on the identification of substances with neurotoxic potential, studies of exposed populations, risk assessment, and biologic markers of disease. This Committee recommended: "all physicians should be trained to take a thorough occupational-exposure history and to be aware of other possible sources of toxic exposure". Although convened after several outbreaks of neurotoxic syndromes, clinical neurological considerations were lacking. A
