A local exhaust manifold was attached to two different tabletop ethylene oxide sterilizers. One tabletop sterilizer had a built-in cycle purge feature, while the other had the standard single terminal vacuum cycle. Operator exposure and environmental levels of ethylene oxide were determined with and without local exhaust, and with and without purge cycle. Results from both charcoal tube collection samples and infra-red analysis clearly demonstrated the benefit of a local exhaust coupled with cycle purge in reducing operator exposure to and environmental contamination by ethylene oxide to nearl

The radiological experience has produced some sophisticated approaches to estimating the environmental risks of anthropogenic chemicals, based on well-validated models for both health effects and exposure assessment. As to exposure assessment, site- and situation-specific data must be acquired for quantitative predictions. However, the requirements for quantitative estimation are often overlooked, even with the radiological models. Metabolism or other chemical processes, also, may more profoundly alter a chemical contaminant than they would a radioelement. Suitably developed models provide use

Control monitoring (continuous multipoint monitoring of workplace air) has been used in a number of industries to help control worker exposure to a wide variety of contaminants. Control problems were identified and effective control has been maintained by keeping workers and management aware of pollutant levels in the workplace. To be used effectively, the control monitoring system must be viewed as an integral part of workplace control. In this report, the general uses of control monitoring equipment are given, the factors to be considered in choosing equipment for control monitoring purposes

To determine the role of N-nitrosamines in the known increased cancer risk of rubber workers, air concentrations of such carcinogens were measured by area sampling or personal monitoring in 19 factories. N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and N-nitrosomorpholine (NMOR) were found regularly, the air concentrations varying between 0.1 and 380 micrograms/m3 personal monitoring. The mean concentration was usually in the range of 1-10 micrograms/m3. Several other nitrosamines could be detected in certain production branches. In retail shops and storage rooms of tyres NDMA and NMOR were found. Most rubbe

Effective prevention has in the first place to be based on the knowledge of causal factors. In preventive oncology difficulties arise from the fact that our knowledge of causal mechanisms is--with some exceptions--not sufficient to provide clear guidelines for preventive action. Furthermore, it seems beyond doubt that development of cancer is a multifactorial process in which individual disposition, age and exposure to carcinogens participate. Only exposure can be modified by preventive measures. Epidemiological analysis of available data suggests that the effect of environmental carcinogens s

The multistage theory of carcinogenesis and its implications for evaluating the effect of exposure to carcinogens in the workplace are described. This theory predicts different relationships between excess carcinogenic risk and duration of exposure, age at initial exposure, and follow-up time since exposure stopped. These relationships are shown to depend on the stage of the carcinogenic process affected by the carcinogen, i.e., action at an early stage or a later stage. The patterns of excess lung cancer mortality were examined for a cohort of copper smelter workers exposed to atmospheric ars

A health study was carried out on 2066 workers in an aluminum smelter in Kitimat, British Columbia to study the effects of exposure to fluoride and other air contaminants encountered on the potlines on the musculoskeletal system, hemopoietic tissue, liver, and renal function. Three hundred seventy-two railway repair workers from Squamish, British Columbia served as an "external" control group. Examination of the spine and sacroiliac joints and pelvic X-ray were conducted on long-term potline workers and a number of "internal" control workers in the smelter not exposed to any air contaminants.

Exposure of nuclear medicine personnel to 133X was examined quantitatively at three area hospitals during ventilation-perfusion studies in which the technologists breathed through a specially made xenon-trapping apparatus. The accumulated mean xenon activity varied a great deal from hospital to hospital, ranging from 52 nCi (1.92 kBq) to over 5 microCi (185 kBq) during a typical 20-minute lung study. The observed difference largely depended on the xenon exhaust and trapping systems, which could make a 100-fold difference in exposure rates. The air flow and its exchange rate in the room were ad

Through the years, considerable amounts of Pb have been mobilized into our environment, and Pb may represent one of the most ubiquitous of all toxic metal contaminants. Excluding occupational exposure, the general population receives almost 70% of its total exposure to Pb from food. Other important sources of exposure include drinking water and air; minor sources include tobacco products, decorative glassware, and other types of food utensils. For young children, ingestion of Pb-containing soil or dust via normal hand-to-mouth activity or, in extreme cases, pica (the abnormal intake of soil, p

Environmental health monitoring and surveillance include activities such as collection of information on the production and use of chemicals; preparation of inventories of waste discharges; measurement of physical, chemical and biological agents in air, water and food, at work place and at home; epidemiological investigations, and collection and analysis of environmental, and health statistical data. There are two main objectives of these activities: estimation of human exposure to potentially harmful environmental factors and timely detection of adverse health effects; and the assessment of e

A report by Lee and Fraumeni in 1969 linked exposure to arsenic and other contaminants to a threefold excess of respiratory cancer among 8,047 employees at the Anaconda copper smelter. We established vital status through December 1977 for a sample of 1,800 men from the original cohort. Average arsenic concentrations were estimated for each smelter department based on industrial hygiene measurements made from 1943 to 1965. Departments with similar concentrations were combined into four categories of exposure: 1) low (less than 100 micrograms/m3), 2) medium (100-499 micrograms/m3), 3) high (500-

Sample of airborne dust generated the handling of aflatoxin-contaminated corn were collected and analyzed to assess potential exposures of farmers and other agricultural workers to these mycotoxins. Using high volume total dust samplers and a high volume Andersen sampler, downwind dust samples were collected on glass filter when contaminated corn was transferred by augers from a storage bin into a wagon and back into the storage bin. The aflatoxin B1 content of the 15 dust samples ranged from 12.5 to 204.3 ppb, with an average of 138 ppb; the aflatoxin B2 content ranged from 1.1 to 41.6 ppb, w

There is increasing global concern on the upward trend of cancer attributable to environmental causes. This has found articulate expression in the intensive action programme initiated in developed countries to carry out systematic epidemiological surveillance studies on environmental based cancer, to conduct both short-term and long-term studies on experimental animals on the mechanism of induction and to search for preventive measures. Of all environmental agents, chemicals which have been introduced by man have received the maximum attention on account of the fact that besides functioning pe

The possible contribution of occupational and environmental exposures to cancer has been known for many years and is now a highly mature field of study. By the 1950s, a substantial list of agents of processes had been identified as associated with cancer of one organ or another. In the last several decades a number of additions have been made to the list. No doubt more will be found in the future. The last decade, especially, has brought increased public attention to cancer in the workplace. The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 has been a significant contributor to the current increa

Four virus strains -- influenza A/Texas 1/77 (H3N2) an A/USSR 90/77 (H1N1), adenovirus and parainfluenza type 2 -- were isolated from different specimens collected in dental surgery rooms. High levels of antibodies to respiratory viruses (influenza, parainfluenza 1, 2 and 3), adeno-, cytomegalic and herpes viruses, as well as the presence of HBsAg and anti-HBs could be detected in sera from patients hospitalized for dento-maxillofacial surgery. An epidemiological survey among dentists and dental assistants confirmed their exposure to an enhanced risk of occupational virus contamination, as com

A passive diffusion dosimeter has been suggested as an economical and accurate means of sampling airborne concentrations of gases and vapors in the working environment. The dosimeter utilizes molecular diffusion through a tube of known geometry to obtain a quantitative determination of airborne concentrations of the contaminant of interest. A passive sampling dosimeter was designed to measure concentrations of aniline vapor in air. Diffusion tubes of 1.5, 3.0, and 4.5 cm lengths were tested under controlled conditions of relative humidity, air temperature, and vapor concentrations. The results

A new passive monitor for organic vapors has been developed for the determination of the time-weighted average (TWA) concentration of contaminants in air. This personal dosimeter type badge monitor collects the organic vapors through the mechanism of molecular diffusion and adsorption onto an activated carbon collection element. After exposure, the activated carbon is removed from the device and analyzed using gas chromatographic techniques outlined in NIOSH Physical and Chemical Analysis Method (P&CAM) 127. Current NIOSH standards for measuring the concentration of organic vapors in the atmos

Asbestos contamination of the outside aid in Paris and suburbs has been monitored in some environmental situations, namely, "typical" urban sites removed from known sources of asbestos emissions, crossroad locations, the vicinity of a freeway, areas with buildings under construction, and areas around asbestos factories. In the same manner, measurements have been performed inside buildings of various types: those sprayed with asbestos-containing materials, those fitted with asbestos products, and control buildings. Air has been sampled by use of 0.45 micrometer pore size Millipore filters. Afte

The disinfection of drinking water by chlorination has in recent years come under closer scrutiny because of the potential hazards associated with the production of stable chlorinated organic chemicals. Organic chemical contaminants are common to all water supplies and it is now well-established that chlorinated by-products are obtained under conditions of disinfection, or during tertiary treatment of sewage whose products can ultimately find their way into drinking water supplies. Naturally occurring humic substances which are invariably present in drinking waters are probably the source of c

In order to evaluate the exposure of agricultural workers to dust-borne bacteria, microbiological examinations of the air were performed in grain storing and processing plants and in animal houses. Large concentrations of viable microorganisms, ranging from 129.2 to 1289.9 thousands/m3 of air, were found in the rooms contaminated with grain dust and much lower in those contaminated with flour dust (22.6 thousands/m3). Bacteria predominated in the air of grain plants, whereas actinomycetes and fungi were less numerous. The most abundant bacteria were Gram negative rods of the species Erwinia he
