OBJECTIVE: Farming is associated with exposure to a wide variety of risk factors including organic dusts, endotoxins, allergens and other chemicals. The ability of some of these agents to interact with the immune system is demonstrated in the presented study which was undertaken to evaluate the relationship between pig and cow breeding, and the immune system early changes. Particular attention is paid to selected serum cytokines.
METHODS: Sixty four animal breeders (36 cattle and 28 pig breeders) were selected as the exposed group, and 32 rural workers not engaged in animal breeding were util

Agricultural contamination with pesticides and antibiotics is a challenging problem that needs to be fully addressed. Bee products, such as honey, are widely consumed as food and medicine and their contamination may carry serious health hazards. Honey and other bee products are polluted by pesticides, heavy metals, bacteria and radioactive materials. Pesticide residues cause genetic mutations and cellular degradation and presence of antibiotics might increase resistant human or animal's pathogens. Many cases of infant botulisms have been attributed to contaminated honey. Honey may be very toxi

Organophosphorus (OP) compounds include a broad group of toxic chemicals such as insecticides, chemical warfare agents and antiwear agents. The liver cytochromes P450 bioactivate many OPs to potent inhibitors of serine hydrolases. Cholinesterases were the first OP targets discovered and are the most studied. They are used to monitor human exposures to OP compounds. However, the assay that is currently used has limitations. The mechanism of action of OP compounds is the inhibition of serine hydrolases by covalently modifying their active-site serine. After structural rearrangement, the complex

Agriculture is a particularly critical field for the health and safety of workers, especially because of the exposure to a variety of risk factors for respiratory system. Organic and mineral dusts, micro-organisms (fungi and bacteria), animal proteins, chemicals (pesticides, disinfectants and toxic gases (NH3, CO, H2S, SO2, NO2 CO2) often cause respiratory diseases in workers in this sector. In Italy, occupational diseases in agriculture have had a record growth--in terms of percentage increase--in the last few years, much higher than other industries (+ 341.8% between 2006 and 2010). This is

Fumigation of hospital rooms with high concentrations of toxic chemicals has been proposed to reduce microbial agents on hospital surfaces and to control infections. Chemical fumigation has been used effectively in other areas, such as building decontamination after bioterrorism events, in agriculture, and in residential structures. However, even in these situations, there have been incidents where fumigants have escaped, causing illness and death to exposed workers and the public. Before expanding the use of a potentially hazardous technology in areas where there are vulnerable individuals, i

The Talamanca County in Costa Rica has large-scale banana and small-scale plantain production, probably causing pesticide exposure in indigenous children. We explored to what extent different community actors are aware of children's pesticide hazards and how their awareness related to socio-economical and cultural conditions. Methods comprised eight focus groups with fathers and mothers separately, 27 semi-structured interviews to key actors, and field observations. As a whole, the indigenous plantain farmers and banana plantation workers had some general knowledge of pesticides concerning cro

A subset of workers in swine confinement facilities develops chronic respiratory disease. An aqueous extract of dust from these facilities (hogbarn dust extract [HDE]) induces IL-6 and IL-8 release and several other responses in isolated airway epithelial cells. The cell membrane receptors by which HDE initiates these responses have not been identified. Because several other inhaled agents induce airway epithelial cell responses through epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) activation, we hypothesized that HDE would activate EGFRs and that EGFRs would be required for some of the responses to

Thyreostats are growth-promoters banned in Europe since 1981. The identification of thiouracil (TU) in animal biological matrices can, however, no longer be systematically interpreted as a consequence of illegal administration. Indeed, some experimental results have indicated a causal link between cruciferous-based diet and the presence of TU in urine of bovines. The present study aims at investigating, on a large scale (n > 1300), the natural occurrence of thiouracil in urine samples collected from different animal species. TU was identified in main breeding animal species: bovine, porcine an

Exposure to pesticides has the capacity to cause mitochondrial dysfunction. An increase mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) content has also been suggested to relate with DNA damaging agent. In mitochondria, the manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) is a scavenger of reactive oxygen species, and the 8-oxoguanine DNA glycosylase (OGG1) is the major DNA glycosylase for the repair of 8-oxoG lesions. However, the alteration of mtDNA content elicited by pesticide exposure in people with genetic variations in MnSOD or OGG1 has not been investigated. In this study, the mitochondrial to nuclear DNA ratio was q

Organophosphorus compounds (OPCs) are widely used in agriculture as pesticides and occasionally in industrial settings. They have also been developed as warfare nerve agents. OPCs poisoning from intentional, accidental, and occupational exposure is a major public health problem, especially across the rural developing world. The main toxic mechanism of OPCs is the inhibition of the enzymes acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE), resulting in accumulation of acetylcholine (ACh) at the synapse with cholinergic crisis and possible death. Exposure to even small amounts of an

The increase in accidental organophosphate poisoning as well as the rise in the number of cases of suicide attempts with organophosphate compounds is due to primarily to the widespread use of these compounds in agriculture. Organophosphates are anti-acetycholinesterase agents and their toxicity affects many organs, including the pancreas, liver and heart. Cardiac complications often accompany poisoning with these compounds and may be serious and often fatal. However, little is known about the myocardial infarction risk associated with exposure to pesticides. Herein, a rare case of acute myocar

In this review, we address the identification of residual chemical hazards in shellfish collected from the marine environment or in marketed shellfish. Data, assembled on the concentration of contaminants detected, were compared with the appropriate regulatory and food safety standards. Moreover, data on human exposure and body burden levels were evaluated in the context of potential health risks.Shellfish farming is a common industry along European coasts. The primary types of shellfish consumed in France are oysters, mussels, king scallops, winkles, whelks, cockles, clams, and other scallops.

There are two main groups of biological agents regarded as occupational hazards: allergenic and/or toxic agents forming bioaerosols, and agents causing zoonoses and other infectious diseases. Bioaerosols occurring in the agricultural work environments comprise: bacteria, fungi, high molecular polymers produced by bacteria (endotoxin) or by fungi (β-glucans), low molecular secondary metabolites of fungi (mycotoxins, volatile organic compounds) and various particles of plant and animal origin. All these agents could be a cause of allergic and/or immunotoxic occupational diseases of respiratory o

BACKGROUND: Previous studies investigating associations between occupational history and risk of exocrine pancreatic cancer (EPC) did not use biomarkers of exposure. The only two studies that measured internal concentrations of organochlorine compounds (OCs) in EPC did not analyse their relationship with occupation.
OBJECTIVE: To analyse the relationship between occupational history and blood concentrations of seven OCs in patients with EPC.
METHODS: Incident cases of EPC were prospectively identified, and during hospital admission were interviewed face-to-face on occupational history and li

Inappropriate use of toxic chemicals is common in developing countries, where it leads to excessive exposure and high risks of unintentional poisoning. Risks are particularly high with the pesticides used in agriculture, poor rural populations live and work in close proximity to these compounds and often store these compounds in and around their homes. It is estimated that most of the death from pesticide poisoning occur in developing countries. Organophosphate insecticides have been extensively used in agriculture in developing countries. Dichlorvos is a synthetic insecticide and belongs to a

Jatropha is a nonedible oil seed plant belonging to Euphorbiaceae family. Global awareness of sustainable and alternative energy resources has propelled research on Jatropha oil as a feedstock for biodiesel production. During the past two decades, several cultivation projects were undertaken to produce Jatropha oil. In future, the increased cultivation of toxic Jatropha plants and utilization of its agro-industrial by-products may raise the frequency of contact with humans, animals, and other organisms. An attempt was thus made to present known information on toxicity of Jatropha plants. The t

Intensive poultry production is associated with extreme densities of birds crammed into industrial-scale hen houses. Consequently, the bird keepers are exposed to elevated concentrations of dust. Exposure to dust, containing pathogenic mycological agents, may cause exacerbate asthma, allergic alveolitis, as well as organic dust toxic syndrome. Geographic Information System (GIS) allows to view, understand, question, interpret, and visualize biological data, among them mycological threats. The aim of the presently reported study was to create the mycological database from the chicken farms and
