Grand rounds: outbreak of hematologic abnormalities in a community of people exposed to leakage of fire extinguisher gas.

CONTEXT: Although there are ample data on the respiratory effects of exposure to fire extinguisher gas, the potential hematologic effects have not been fully documented. We conducted this study to determine the possible etiologic agent(s) for a decrease in red blood cells among community residents in Taipei, Taiwan, after they were exposed to leakage of mixed fire extinguishants containing bromotrifluoromethane (CF3Br, Halon 1301), bromochlorodifluoromethane (CF2BrCl, Halon 1211), and dichlorodifluoromethane (CCl2F2, CFC-12). CASE PRESENTATION: We studied 117 exposed residents who came into o

Total mercury levels in hair, toenail, and urine among women free from occupational exposure and their relations to renal tubular function.

To investigate the relations among total mercury levels in hair, toenail, and urine, together with potential effects of methylmercury intake on renal tubular function, we determined their levels, and urinary N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase activity (NAG) and alpha1-microglobulin (AMG) in 59 women free from occupational exposures, and estimated daily mercury intakes from fish and other seafood using a food frequency questionnaire. Mercury levels (mean+/-SD) in the women were 1.51+/-0.91 microg/g in hair, 0.59+/-0.32 microg/g in toenail, and 0.86+/-0.66 microg/g creatinine in urine; and, there w

Beauty product-related exposures and childhood brain tumors in seven countries: results from the SEARCH International Brain Tumor Study.

Data from 1218 cases of childhood brain tumors (CBT) diagnosed between 1976 and 1994 and 2223 matched controls from the general population were included in an analysis of maternal beauty product exposure and beauty-related employment in 9 centers in 7 countries. A 50% increased odds ratio (OR) [95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.0-2.1] for CBT was observed among children of mothers who were exposed via personal use of and/or possible ambient contact with beauty products during the 5 years preceding the index child's birth compared with children of mothers never exposed to beauty products during

Soluble transition metals in welding fumes cause inflammation via activation of NF-kappaB and AP-1.

We previously reported that the molecular pro-inflammatory effects of welding fumes in vitro were caused by soluble transition metals via an oxidative stress-mediated mechanism. Herein, we tested the hypothesis that transition metals in welding fume drive the in vivo inflammatory response caused by welding fume. Rats were instilled with either whole, soluble extract or washed welding fume particulates or soluble extracts pre-treated with a transition metal chelator. Markers of pulmonary inflammation were measured in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and nuclear translocation of transcrip

Nine cases of accidental exposure to dimethyl sulphate--a potential chemical weapon.

Dimethyl sulphate (DMS) is an innocuous appearing, widely used, and highly toxic chemical. It is used both as a methylating agent in industrial chemical synthesis and in medical laboratories for chemical cleavage of DNA. It is readily absorbed through the skin, mucous membranes, and gastrointestinal tract. Delayed toxicity allows potentially fatal exposures to occur prior to development of any warning symptoms. Toxicity is manifested initially by mucosal inflammation of eyes, nose, oropharynx, and airways. This can progress to severe airway oedema and necrosis, and non-cardiogenic pulmonary oe

Occupational bladder cancer in a 4,4 -methylenebis(2-chloroaniline) (MBOCA)-exposed worker.

A 52-year-old male chemical worker was admitted to the hospital with a history of paroxysmal microscopic hematuria for about 2 years and nocturia with gross hematuria about five times per night for 2 months. He was a nonsmoker and denied a history of any other bladder carcinogen exposure except for occasional pesticide application during agricultural work. Intravenous urogram imaging showed a mass occupying half of the bladder capacity. Cystoscopy revealed a mass over the left dome of the bladder. Cystoscopic biopsy revealed a grade 3 invasive transitional cell carcinoma with marked necrosis.

Analytical investigations on a releasing agent application in aluminium diecasting.

BACKGROUND, AIMS AND SCOPE: Releasing agents, applied in the aluminium diecasting process, usually consist of water, oils, waxes, polysiloxanes, as well as of a set of additives like emulsifiers, corrosion inhibitors, and biocides. During spray application and part release, gases and aerosols are emitted into workplace air. The chemical compositions of these emissions are determined by the components of the releasing agents and their reaction products formed during thermal stress of more than 700 degrees C. In the frame of the joint project, the analytical tasks were to develop an appropriate

Genotoxic and cytotoxic effects of 60Co gamma-rays and 90Sr/90Y beta-rays on Chinese hamster ovary cells (CHO-K1).

Among various types of ionizing radiation, the beta emitter radionuclides are involved in many sectors of human activity, such as nuclear medicine, nuclear industries and biomedicine, with a consequently increased risk of accidental, occupational or therapeutic exposure. Despite their recognized importance, there is little information about the effect of beta particles at the cellular level when compared to other types of ionizing radiation. Thus, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the genotoxic and cytotoxic effects of (90)Sr/(90)Y-a pure, highly energetic beta source-on Chine

NTP technical report on the toxicology and carcinogenesis studies of Stoddard Solvent IIC (Cas No. 64742-88-7) in F344/N rats and B6C3F1 mice (inhalation studies).

UNLABELLED: Stoddard solvent (white spirit/mineral spirit) is the most widely used solvent in the paint industry. It is used as a dry cleaning agent; as an extraction, cleaning, and degreasing solvent; and as a solvent in aerosols, paints, wood preservatives, asphalt products, lacquers, and varnishes. Stoddard solvent IIC was nominated by the International Union, United Auto Workers, for carcinogenicity testing because of the large volume used in industrial and other settings. Male and female F344/N rats and B6C3F1 mice were exposed to Stoddard solvent IIC (greater than 99% pure) by inhalation

[Occupational bio hazards: current issues].

Over the last decade, there was noted a large advancement of knowledge on living organisms and their products posing a potential occupational risk. Novel risk factors, often new to science, were identified, the role and significance of already known factors better comprehended, and occupational groups endangered by biological hazards more thoroughly recognized. Novel viruses and prions, emerging in different parts of the world, may pose a particular threat to health and life of health care workers, agriculture workers and veterinarians. A new coronavirus (SCoV) that evoked a rapid outbreak of

Release of heavy metals from Tunisian traditional earthenware.

Lead and other heavy metals are found to leach from the glazes of some Tunisian glazed earthenware in concentrations high enough to constitute a serious health hazard. When yellow/green and white/green colored mugs available on the Tunisian market were filled with acetic acid solutions, concentrations of up to 51 microg lead per ml of leachate were measured. The values greatly exceed the limit allowed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations for a 24-h leaching test. The use of a traditional milk derivative (leben) widely consumed as a beverage in Tunisia as a leaching agent sh

Molecular and cellular mechanisms of cadmium carcinogenesis.

Cadmium is a heavy metal, which is widely used in industry, affecting human health through occupational and environmental exposure. In mammals, it exerts multiple toxic effects and has been classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Cadmium affects cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis and other cellular activities. Cd2+ does not catalyze Fenton-type reactions because it does not accept or donate electrons under physiological conditions, and it is only weakly genotoxic. Hence, indirect mechanisms are implicated in the carcinogenicity of cadmiu

Dioxin and cancer: a critical review.

2,3,7,8-tetrachlordibenzo-p-doxin (TCDD) would not have been designated as a Group 1 carcinogen by IARC had there not been a change in the criteria used for inclusion in this category. Furthermore, there is no precedent for indicating, as did IARC, that a single chemical acts as a pluripotential carcinogen by modestly increasing human risk for all cancer while not increasing the risk for any single cancer at least moderately. IARC moved TCDD to Group 1 based on mechanistic considerations focusing on the Ah receptor. However, while occupancy of the Ah receptor by TCDD may be necessary for its t

Occupation and lung cancer in nonsmokers.

Lung cancer remains a significant burden on society, with approximately 157,200 deaths from this disease in 2003 occurring in the United States alone. Smoking causes the vast majority of cases (and deaths) from lung cancer, occupation may account for as many as 16,700 of such deaths. To examine the influence of occupation independent of smoking, we reviewed the literature on occupational lung cancer in nonsmokers. We found that most individual studies and summaries of occupational lung cancer are based on data having a heavy preponderance of male smokers. Relatively little data are available c

Implant-supported fixed cantilever prostheses in partially edentulous arches. A seven-year prospective study.

OBJECTIVES: Setting and implementing occupational exposure limits (OELs) is one of the measures taken to protect workers from adverse effects of hazardous chemicals. The EU Regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) introduced an additional kind of exposure guidance values for workers; namely, the derived no effect level (DNEL) for workers' inhalation exposure (worker DNEL). About 500 substances have a Swedish OEL, while roughly 5000 substances have a worker DNEL derived by REACH registrants. This work aims to investigate how the Swedish OELs and

Bioaerosol health effects and exposure assessment: progress and prospects.

Exposures to bioaerosols in the occupational environment are associated with a wide range of health effects with major public health impact, including infectious diseases, acute toxic effects, allergies and cancer. Respiratory symptoms and lung function impairment are the most widely studied and probably among the most important bioaerosol-associated health effects. In addition to these adverse health effects some protective effects of microbial exposure on atopy and atopic conditions has also been suggested. New industrial activities have emerged in recent years in which exposures to bioaeros
