Socio-economic and occupational risk factors for gastric cancer: a cohort study in Sweden.

The effects of socio-economic/occupational factors on gastric cancer at various subsites (including corpus, cardia and unspecified cancers) are not well known. To investigate this issue, we carried out a follow-up study on the economically active Swedish population, based on the Swedish Family-Cancer Database. We calculated standardized incidence ratios and 95% confidence intervals for different occupational groups, adjusted for age, period, region and socio-economic status. The reference group was all the economically active population. Manual workers and farmers were at an increased risk of

Occupational risk factors for kidney cancer: a cohort study in Sweden.

Although many studies have examined the associations between occupational exposures and kidney cancer, the evidence is not consistent. To examine the risk of occupational exposures on kidney cancer, we carried out a follow-up study on the economically active Swedish population, based on the latest update of the Swedish Family-Cancer Database. We calculated standardized incidence ratios (SIR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for different occupational groups, adjusted for age, period, and socioeconomic status. The reference group was all the economically active population. An increased risk o

Cancer risks in a historical UK cohort of benzene exposed workers.

AIMS: To examine mortality from different causes and cancer incidence among a cohort of benzene workers in England and Wales. METHODS: A cohort of 5514 workers who had been occupationally exposed to benzene in 1966/67 or earlier was assembled by the former Factory Inspectorate and the Medical Research Council from details provided by 233 employers in England and Wales. The cohort was followed up for mortality (1968-2002) and cancer registrations (1971-2001). National mortality rates and cancer registration (incidence) rates were used to calculate standardised mortality ratios and standardised

Mortality and cancer incidence in a Swedish art glassworks--an updated cohort study.

AIM: To study mortality and cancer incidence, in a Swedish art glassworks producing both heavy and semi-crystal glassware, in an extended cohort of workers over a long time period during which some preventive actions had taken place. METHODS: In the updated study, 1,229 men and women were eligible as cohort members during the period 1964-1997. The observed number of cases was compared with expected numbers, as calculated from cause-, age-, gender- and calendar year-specific national rates for mortality and cancer incidence. RESULTS: Among men only, a significant risk was seen for cancer inci

Analysis of survival of mesothelioma cases in the Italian register (ReNaM).

The Italian National Mesothelioma Register (ReNaM) was set up at ISPESL (the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Prevention) in 1993. Five Italian regions (Piedmont, Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany and Puglia, with a total of approximately 17500000 inhabitants) agreed to record mesothelioma cases according to guidelines established by ISPESL, to define exposure to asbestos and transmit the data to ISPESL. We describe an analysis of survival of 429 mesothelioma cases-392 pleural, 34 peritoneal and 3 in the pericardium-diagnosed during 1997, with variable follow-up from June 1999 to

Causes of radiologists' deaths: a survey of 400 cases in the literature.

BACKGROUND: In their profession, radiologists use ionizing radiation, which has a negative effect on tissue and is a cause of various cancers and other diseases. OBJECTIVES: To determine the causes of radiologists' deaths in general and whether they are related with cancer as a cause of death. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The causes of 400 radiologists' deaths were analyzed retrospectively in this study based on descriptions available in the American Journal of Roentgenology from 1975 to 1999 and Radiology from 1970 to 1999, randomly chosen. The data were tabulated and discussion focused on cancer

Injury risks and socioeconomic groups in different settings. Differences in morbidity between men and between women at working ages.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether greater injury risk in lower socioeconomic groups at working ages is attributable to differences in work conditions or a reflection of a wider overall pattern of risk. The current study investigates socioeconomic differences in non-fatal injury risks in a variety of settings. METHODS: Data were taken from a community-based injury register built up over one year (November 1989 to October 1990) in a semi-urban Swedish municipality (256,510 inhabitants), and then linked by record to Sweden's National Population Register (based on the census of 1990). Occupational exposure to formaldehyde and wood dust and nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether occupational exposures to formaldehyde and wood dust increase the risk of nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC). METHODS: A multicentered, population based case-control study was carried out at five cancer registries in the United States participating in the National Cancer Institute's SEER program. Cases (n=196) with a newly diagnosed NPC between 1987 and 1993, and controls (n=244) selected over the same period from the general population through random digit dialing participated in structured telephone interviews which inquired about suspected risk factors for the d

[High risk of pleural mesothelioma among the state railroad carriage repair workers].

Exposure to asbestos in a facility for the repair of railroad carriages in Bologna was initially studied in 1980, when the Local Health Unit started a program of primary prevention on request of the Unions. At that time workers employed in jobs with high exposure to asbestos were identified. The mortality experience of these 173 subjects was investigated from 01.01.1979 through 31.12.1997, and compared to that of the population of Emilia Romagna. SMR for all causes was 69, with upper limit of the confidence interval lower than 100; this was largely due to a significant decrease of cardiovascul

Parental agricultural work and selected congenital malformations.

The authors conducted a case-control study in Comunidad Valenciana, Spain, to assess the relation between occupational exposure to pesticides, mainly as a result of agricultural work, and the prevalence of congenital malformations. A total of 261 cases and 261 controls were selected from those infants born in eight public hospitals during 1993-1994. The cases were those who were diagnosed with selected defects (nervous system, cardiovascular, oral clefts, hypospadias/epispadias, musculoskeletal, and unspecified anomalies) during their first year of life. Mortality in a cohort of pentachlorophenol manufacturing workers, 1940-1989.

Mortality in a cohort of 770 workers with potential pentachlorophenol (PCP) exposure was evaluated from 1940 through 1989. The study cohort is a subset of a larger cohort of workers with potential exposure to higher chlorinated dioxins. Total mortality and cancer mortality in the PCP cohort were slightly lower than expected in comparison to the U.S. white male population. There were 229 total deaths with 242.5 expected (SMR = 94, 95% confidence interval 83-108), and 50 cancer deaths with 52.6 expected (SMR = 95, 95% confidence interval 71-125). In comparison with unexposed employees, the risk

Effects of parental occupational exposure to lead and other metals on spontaneous abortion.

The aim of this article was to summarize the epidemiologic studies on the possible impact of parental occupational exposure to lead or other metals on spontaneous abortion. For paternal exposure, the total number of abortions in the studies with adequate exposure contrast were 340 for lead, 240 for mercury, and 90 for unspecified metals and, correspondingly, for maternal exposure, about 80 for lead, 80 for mercury, 70 for nickel, and 130 for exposure to unspecified metals. Epidemiologic studies indicate that paternal exposure to lead or mercury might be associated with the risk of spontaneous

Monitoring acrylic fiber workers for liver toxicity and exposure to dimethylacetamide. 2. Serum clinical chemistry results of dimethylacetamide-exposed workers.

Worker exposure to N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAC) in an acrylic fiber manufacturing facility was measured, over a 1-year study period, by full-shift (12 hours) personal air monitoring for DMAC and biological monitoring for levels of DMAC, N-methylacetamide (MMAC) and acetamide in post-shift spot urine samples. Evidence of liver toxicity was assessed by serum clinical chemistry tests (serum levels of total bilirubin, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, and gamma-glutamyl transpeptase) at least once during the study period for all 127 male workers in the two

Cancer risk in asphalt workers and roofers: review and meta-analysis of epidemiologic studies.

Twenty epidemiologic studies have described cancer risk in asphalt workers and roofers in various countries. A current concern for these workers is the potential carcinogenicity posed by inhalation of bitumen fumes or dermal exposure to bitumens. Bitumens are chemically different from many carcinogenic coal-tar based materials. Both have been employed in road paving and waterproofing. We examined and combined the results of the epidemiologic studies conducted on asphalt workers and roofers. We examined the cancer risk separately in three broad job categories: 1) roofers (exposed to bitumen fum

Cancer mortality patterns among female and male workers employed in a cable manufacturing plant during World War II.

A cohort mortality study was conducted among 9028 (3042 women, 5986 men) workers potentially exposed to chlorinated naphthalenes (chloracnegens structurally similar to dioxins) and asbestos in the manufacture of Navy cable during World War II. Based on mortality through December 31, 1985, standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) for all cancers was 1.03 in women (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.9 to 1.17) and 1.18 in men (95% CI = 1.10 to 1.26). There were no significant elevations in causes of death hypothesized a prior to be associated with chlorinated naphthalene exposure (malignant neoplasms

Risk of cancer for arc welders in the Federal Republic of Germany: results of a second follow up (1983-8).

An extended follow up of 1221 chromium and nickel exposed welders in the Federal Republic of Germany confirmed an increased relative risk of 1.6 for all cancers compared with an internal reference group of 1694 turners. In an external comparison an excess of deaths from malignant tumours compared with that expected from the national mortality rates was found (standardised mortality ratio (SMR) = 109), which was clearly related to both time since first exposure and duration of exposure. Mortality from lung cancer was increased among welders (SMR = 113) but also among turners (SMR = 108). The di
