Preconception Folic Acid Supplementation Associated with Attenuated Effects of Air Pollution on Birthweight Outcomes.

Gestational exposure to ambient air pollution has been linked to adverse birth outcomes. Folic acid (FA) supplementation supports fetal development, but the optimal timing for protective effects remains uncertain. This study aims to determine whether maternal FA supplementation prior to conception modifies the association between gestational air pollution exposure and birthweight-related outcomes in a population where most women also took FA during pregnancy. We analyzed data from 10,579 mother-child pairs from a preconception cohort in Shanghai, China. Ambient concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, N

Traffic-related air pollution links with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in Denmark: Developmental periods of susceptibility and sex-specificity.

Literature supports that higher early life exposure to air pollution arising from combustion, e.g., traffic exhaust and electric power generation, is associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, little is known about whether certain periods of exposure during fetal or childhood brain development are more important, i.e. whether there are critical windows of exposure, or whether associations differ by child sex. To address these gaps, we performed a population-based case-cohort study including singletons born 1981-2008 using Danish national registry data resources.

Long-Term Exposure to Ambient Air Pollution and Cervical Cancer Outcomes in Chinese Women: A Prospective Study on Recurrence and Mortality Risks.

The impact of air pollution on the prognosis of cervical cancer (CC) remains unclear. This study examined the associations of major air pollutants on recurrence and mortality among CC patients. We enrolled 3,758 women diagnosed with primary CC at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University between 2019 and 2022, following them annually until June 2024. Air pollution exposure was estimated using high-resolution spatiotemporal models based on residential addresses. Weighted Cox proportional hazards models based on the Fine-Gray approach were used to estimate the risk of recurrence

Radiation Vasculopathy of the Coronary Arteries: State-of-the Art Review.

Radiation-associated coronary artery disease (RACAD) is a distinct form of coronary artery disease with several specific biological and clinical aspects as well as key knowledge gaps. RACAD is prevalent in patients with cardiac exposure to radiotherapy. As radiotherapy is integral to the effective treatment of many thoracic malignancies, improved long-term survivorship is coupled with increased risk for RACAD. Ionizing radiation induces free radical generation and activation of proinflammatory cascades, leading to endothelial dysfunction and accelerated atherosclerosis. Risks for RACAD are det

Maternal and Indoor Smoking Are Associated with Increased Risk of Acute Respiratory Infection in Under-Five Children: A Meta-Analysis of National Survey Data from Eight Asia-Pacific Countries.

Background: Early exposure to tobacco smoke can harm children's developing respiratory systems, increasing the risk of acute and long-term health consequences. This study examined the association of maternal and indoor smoking with acute respiratory infection (ARI) in under-five children living in eight Asia-Pacific countries. Methods: We analysed Demographic and Health Survey data collected between 2015 and 2022. A logistic regression model was fitted separately to each country's data to obtain the odds of ARI in children for maternal tobacco use, daily indoor smoking, and occasional indoor s

Radiation-Induced Contrast Enhancement After Proton Therapy for Paediatric Brain Tumours: Association with Variable Relative Biological Effectiveness and Linear Energy Transfer.

Background/Objectives: Proton therapy is widely used in paediatric neuro-oncology because of its favourable dose distribution and reduced exposure to radiation of healthy tissue. Nevertheless, current knowledge regarding radiation-induced contrast enhancements (RICE) is largely derived from adult proton therapy cohorts, while evidence in paediatric patients remains limited and the underlying biological mechanisms are still incompletely understood. This study investigated the incidence of RICE in paediatric patients with low-grade glioma (LGG) and ependymoma and evaluated potential associations

Online vs. In Person Gambling: Does Exposure to Brick-and-Mortar Gambling Shops Lead to Increased Online Gambling?

The rise of online gambling in Great Britain in the past two decades has caused increased public health concerns. This study adds to existing evidence on physical gambling environment as a driver of gambling participation, using a 2022 national survey. With respect to gambling-related risks, existing evidence suggests a relationship, albeit complex, between gambling opportunities and increased levels of related problems. The study cuts into this complexity by factorising the risk of online gambling, and leveraging a double negative control design to estimate the causal effect of exposure to ph

Scientific Advances from Sharing URECA Data in Collaborative Analyses.

The NIH-sponsored Urban Environment and Childhood Asthma (URECA) study of families in low-income, urban neighborhoods has provided important insights in this population but has a limited capacity to investigate risk factors across broader geographic and sociodemographic settings. To overcome this shortcoming, URECA investigators have shared data with multiple NIH-sponsored birth cohorts and investigators, including the Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes program and the Children's Allergy and Asthma Data Repository. We collaboratively developed methods, including a novel array to

Air pollution and criminal behavior: a nationwide case-crossover analysis in China.

BACKGROUND: Criminal activity is a major societal and public health concern. However, little is known about how exposure to ambient air pollution influences the incidence of crime. We aimed to examine the short-term associations between air pollution and criminal behavior. METHODS: We used a nationwide time-stratified case-crossover design to analyse 483 718 crime events in China (2013-19). Conditional logistic regression models were employed to estimate associations between individual pollutants and crime, while weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression was used to assess joint effects. Factors influencing the progression of post-mortem changes between scene and autopsy.

Temperature is a pivotal factor influencing the progression of the decomposition process of a human cadaver and thus its post-mortem changes. In cases of advanced decomposition, various problems arise in routine forensic work, such as difficulties in estimating the time or cause of death. To understand and evaluate the impact of temperature and other related factors on the progression of post-mortem changes between the post-mortem examination and autopsy, 135 dead bodies with different post-mortem intervals (PMI) and varying storage times between discovery and autopsy were examined. The Total

Preparing and characterizing environmentally aged microplastics.

Microplastics (MPs) are persistent and widely distributed pollutants that have become an emerging environmental problem. When present in the environment, they are increasingly being incorporated into the carbon cycle and thus participate in the Earth's biochemical cycle alongside other pollutants. However, upon entering the environment (as primary or secondary MPs), various environmental factors collectively influence the physical and chemical characteristics of MPs, leading to changes in surface morphology, particle size and microstructure. These alterations can change their physical behavior
