Newborn metabolomic perturbations associated with prenatal tobacco smoke exposure and early birth.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to tobacco smoke during pregnancy is an established risk factor for early birth including early term birth (ETB) and preterm birth (PTB). However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are minimally understood. In this study, we aimed to characterize the newborn metabolomic associations with early pregnancy maternal tobacco exposure biomarkers and early birth in 269 mother-child pairs in the Atlanta African American Maternal-Child Cohort (2016-2020). METHODS: Established tobacco exposure biomarkers, cotinine and trans-3'-hydroxycotinine (3HC), were measured in maternal urin

Prevalence and factors associated with e-cigarettes consumption among adolescents: A cross-sectional analysis in Latin America and the Caribbean.

E-cigarette use among adolescents has increased globally; however, there is little evidence about usage patterns and their associated factors in Latin America and the Caribbean. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and evaluate the factors associated with e-cigarette use among adolescents in 16 Latin American and Caribbean countries. A secondary data analysis was performed using the Global Youth Tobacco Survey collected between 2014 and 2022. Age-standardized prevalences and their respective 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated, and Poisson regression models were used to id

Global Burden of Secondhand Smoke-Attributable ER-Negative Breast Cancer and Exploratory Immune-Metabolic Mediation Using Mendelian Randomization.

BACKGROUND: The global burden of breast cancer attributable to secondhand smoke (SHS) and its potential biological pathways, particularly for estrogen receptor (ER)-negative disease, remain incompletely characterized. This study aimed to evaluate temporal trends in SHS-attributable breast cancer burden and to explore whether immune and metabolic traits may represent candidate pathways linking SHS exposure with ER-negative breast cancer. METHODS: We analyzed the Global Burden of Disease 1990-2021 data to estimate temporal trends in SHS-attributable breast cancer burden using Joinpoint regressi

CPFTransGAN: A Cross Perception Fusion Transformer-Based Generative Adversarial Network for Head and Neck Cancer Dose Prediction in Radiotherapy.

Radiation therapyis one of the primary treatment modalities for head and neck (H&N) cancer in clinical practice, aiming to deliver sufficient dose to Planning Target Volume (PTV) while protecting surrounding Organs at Risk (OAR) from or minimizing exposure to radiation. Quantitative dose prediction of various tissues and organs is a prerequisite for implementing intelligent precision radiotherapy. In order to improve dose prediction accuracy, we propose a generative adversarial network CPFTransGAN based on Cross Perception Fusion Transformer (CPF Transformer). Specifically, we design a CPF Tra

Radiation-response in Deinococcus bacteria: characterization of the transient IrrE-DdrO heterodimer complex.

Radiation resistance in Deinococcus requires an SOS-independent response mechanism, controlled by M78 family (COG2856) metallopeptidase IrrE and XRE family transcriptional repressor DdrO, to induce expression of DNA repair genes after exposure to radiation. DdrO must form dimers to bind target DNA sites. IrrE inactivates DdrO by cleaving the C-terminal dimerization domain of DdrO. However, the molecular basis of the interaction between IrrE and DdrO is still unknown. Here, we showed that IrrE is monomeric in solution and forms heterodimers with DdrO, with the N-terminal DNA-binding domain of D

Ionizing Radiation Induces Extracellular Trap Release from Macrophages.

Macrophages are key innate immune cells in the host defense against pathogens. Ionizing radiation can impair macrophage functions such as phagocytosis and activate them, potentially exacerbating tissue injury. Macrophage extracellular traps (METs) are formed upon stimulation of macrophages with PAMPs or DAMPs. We hypothesized that macrophages exposed to ionizing radiation can release extracellular traps. Peritoneal macrophages were collected from C57BL/6 mice and subjected to 5 Gy radiation. We performed assays to detect METs, including the immunofluorescence of citrullination of histone H3 an

Theoretical interpretation of ecological observations of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone: application of the Whack-A-Mole (WAM) model.

PURPOSE: Ecological observations in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ) show that populations of large mammals, such as wolves, boars, and elks, have recovered and remain stable despite chronic exposure to radiation. This study applies the Whack-A-Mole (WAM) model-a dynamic, dose-rate-dependent mathematical model-to the CEZ environment to explain the observed ecological stability under persistent low-dose-rate exposure that conventional Linear Non-Threshold (LNT) models fail to predict. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The WAM model explicitly incorporates removal processes of radiation-induced mutated

An Adaptive Attention 3D U-Net for High-Fidelity MRI-to-CT Synthesis: Bridging the Anatomical Gap with CBAM.

Background: The generation of synthetic CT images from MRI scans represents a crucial step toward enabling MRI-only clinical workflows and supporting multi-modal integration in medical imaging, particularly in radiotherapy planning. Despite significant advancements in deep learning models, many current methods still struggle to reconstruct high-density structures, especially bone, and exhibit limited accuracy in density values. This shortcoming is largely attributed to the passage of excessive or noisy features through skip connections in the traditional U-Net architecture, which degrade the q

Advances and challenges in the emergency diagnosis of pulmonary embolism.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a common and potentially life-threatening condition for which diagnostic strategies in the emergency department remain challenging. This review provides an updated synthesis of recent advances in PE diagnosis, from pretest probability assessment and D-dimer-guided strategies to imaging selection across settings. RECENT FINDINGS: In patients with very low clinical probability, pulmonary embolism can be excluded on clinical criteria alone. For low or intermediate probability, using D-dimer thresholds adjusted to clinical probability, including age a

The work of ICRP Task Group 121 - the effects of preconceptional and intrauterine exposures.

Hereditary effects in future generations following radiation exposure of parents prior to the conception of their children are an important component of the ICRP system of radiological protection as set out in the 2007 Recommendations of ICRP. Also of special interest is the exposure in utero of the embryo/fetus because not only do the consequent carcinogenic and hereditary effects need to be considered (as with individuals exposed after birth), but additionally teratogenic (developmental) effects, such as congenital malformations, need to be taken into account. ICRP Task Group 121 is examinin

Proposal to Ensure Timely Resolution of Special Exposure Cohort Petitions.

The Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act of 2000 (EEOICPA) established a framework for compensating US Department of Energy (US DOE) workers and their survivors for illnesses resulting from exposure to radiation and toxic substances. Central to this framework is the Special Exposure Cohort (SEC) Rule, which enables compensation for groups of workers when dose reconstruction is infeasible. Since 2005, over 275 SEC petitions have been evaluated, resulting in 132 SEC classes at 83 sites. The evaluation process, managed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety an

Patient knowledge and acceptance of radiation safety measures correlated to actual exposure records: A survey study.

With the growing prevalence of the use of ionising radiation as a method of medical imaging, it is important to promote patient involvement in the effect of ionising radiation and its relation to medical imaging. Therefore, it is of interest to assess knowledge and acceptance of radiation safety practices amongst 255 adult patients and to compare the results of this survey to patients recorded exposure to radiation. The survey indicated that only 38% of respondents had a high level of understanding of radiation safety practices and only 42% accepted all recommended practices. Patients in the s
