The course of development of light dissemination was investigated for rat lenses exposed in vivo to 30 kJ/m2 ultraviolet radiation (UVR) in the 300-nm wavelength region. After an initial latency phase the light dissemination increases rapidly. At 72 h after the exposure to UVR, light dissemination almost reaches a maximum. An exponential model is proposed for the analysis of this pattern. Light dissemination also increases in lenses contralateral to exposed. This indicates that there may be a systemic response after exposure to UVR which can lead to cataract formation.

The European Code Against Cancer (ECAC) was administered to four groups of women, each comprising about 50 women. A new study is presently being conducted on the exposure of the Swiss population to radiation by diagnostic measures. This study is performed by the Department of Medical Radiation Physics of the University of Berne in collaboration with the Federal Health Bureau and the Swiss Institute for Health and Hospital Matters. In earlier studies the genetically significant exposure of the population and subsequently the median exposure of the red bone marrow had been investigated, whereas now the risk exposure to radiation of as far as possible practically all the risk-relevant organs will be studied.

Using cultured V79 Chinese hamster cells, we found that novobiocin (or 2,4-dinitrophenol) can abrogate, almost completely, the cytotoxicity due to the topoisomerase II inhibitor amsacrine (mAMSA). Results of the analysis of changes in peripheral blood lymphocytes size under chronic exposure to external gamma radiation and pesticide chlorophos++ in combination and separately are presented. It has been found out that under exposure of animals to radiation or the pesticide it is small and big lymphocytes respectively which most significantly suffer quantitatively. Under the joint radiation ++-chemical exposure of the organism the number of both types of cells is reduced simultaneously.

Interlocking nails have expanded the indication for intramedullary fixation to almost any type of fracture of the shaft of the femur. Distal locking with the Brooker-Wills femoral nail is obtained by a wing fixator. This simplifies the operative technique and diminishes exposure to radiation. Adequate control of angulation, shortening and rotation could be achieved in a first series of 25 patients, thus leading to firm bone healing and to early functional recovery.

Extrahepatic biliary obstruction by gallstones during pregnancy is a difficult management problem. We present five patients--four with acute cholangitis and one with gallstone pancreatitis--in whom a surgical procedure was avoided by endoscopic sphincterotomy. All five women delivered healthy babies at term. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and sphincterotomy can be performed safely in pregnancy with minimal exposure to radiation. Endoscopic management should be considered in women presenting with acute cholangitis or gallstone pancreatitis during pregnancy.

S. mansoni cercariae exposed to ultraviolet radiation for 1, 3, 5, 10 and 20 s as well as non-irradiated cercariae remained actively motile 30 min post-irradiation. Thereafter the activity decreased with increasing dose level of radiation and age of cercariae. There was no significant difference between the rates of attachment of the batches of cercariae. The recovery rates (0-49% of cercariae to which mice were exposed) of adult worms were, however, significantly different from the number of cercariae calculated to have attached to the mice (93.5-100% of cercariae to which mice were exposed).

The induction of liver tumors has been studied in BC3F1 male mice after acute whole-body irradiation with fission neutrons and X rays, given at different ages. In prenatally irradiated mice, a small effect is seen after doses of 0.3 to 2.1 Gy of X rays, and a more pronounced effect is found after neutron doses of 0.09 to 0.62 Gy. At 3 months of age the animals show a higher incidence after X-ray doses from 2 Gy, and for neutrons from 0.17 Gy. At 19 months of age, liver tumors are rarely induced by either type of radiation.
