Shielding of the patient's gonads during intramedullary interlocking femoral nailing.

Levels of exposure to radiation were recorded at sixty sites in fifteen patients during intramedullary interlocking femoral nailing. Radiation film dosimeters were placed at four gonadal sites on each subject. A standard male-gonad cup or a pelvic drape of 0.5-millimeter-thick lead-equivalent was put in place to shield the gonads. A second set of four dosimeters was placed external to the shield to approximate unprotected exposure. The total duration of the fluoroscopy averaged five minutes (range, thirty seconds to fourteen minutes). The total exposure to radiation external to the shield was

[Air pollution--consequences for the general practitioner].

Air pollution can also be considered a health risk for those living in Switzerland. During short episodes of high pollution (smog), protection from exposure can be recommended. The continuous air pollution problem, however, implies for the physician a complex educational task with regard to his patients. As the patient does not perceive a direct improvement in his personal health, it is difficult to promote ecologically acceptable behaviour. In view of the long term effects of continuous exposure to air pollution on the health of the population, such preventative activity is considered necessa

[Infrared diaphanoscopy (IRD)--a choice diagnostic procedure? Preliminary results of the clinical testing].

X-ray examinations of maxillary sinus represent an exposure to radiation not to be ignored especially in infancy and childhood. The diagnostic method of infrared diaphanoscopy (IRD) is described. As a method of choice it is compared with other possibilities of diagnosing inflammatory diseases of the maxillary sinus. No exposure to radiation, easy application as well as low costs and small demands on the equipment are essential advantages of this method. First results have already shown its clinical relevance.

Low-dose radiation effects: interactions and synergism.

Experimental data from the author's laboratory are discussed, which demonstrate mutagenic and carcinogenic effects of low dose and low dose-rate exposure to ionizing radiation, and the modification of these effects by various chemical agents. These data are derived from studies of mutagenesis and neoplastic transformation in vitro, as well as on the induction of lung cancer in hamsters. On the basis of these results, several avenues of future research are suggested. These include: 1) the development and application of new human cell systems for studying radiation mutagenesis and transformation

Dentists' hearing and exposure to high speed turbine dental drill noise.

Effect of high speed turbine dental drill noise (DDN) on dentists' hearing at present and during the era of noisier drills was investigated. Hearing of two generations of dentists, power spectral density (PSD) functions of DDN from various drills and the equivalent level (LAeq) of a modern dental operatory were studied. The LAeq was 65 dB with 1 and 50% probability distribution levels of 74 and 57 dB, respectively. DDN was tonal with the spectrum peak always above 6 kHz, containing within 128 Hz frequency band 28-85% of the total noise energy in the PSD function. A cartridge type ball bearing

The effects of noise on vision efficiency.

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between intensity, noise duration and non-auditory effect represented by changes both in visual acuity and the near point of accommodation. Changes in vision efficiency determined by a black and white chess board were monitored during and after 1 h exposure to 4 levels of noise: 90 dB-A, 93 dB-A, 96 dB-A or 99 dB-A and 2 h exposure to 96 dB-A. Results indicated that vision impairment can be attributed to a complex relationship between the intensity and the duration of exposure to noise.

[Exposure to noise, vibration and radiation in Cracow].

The problems are discussed connected with exposure to noise, vibration and ionizing radiation. In Cracow traffic and industrial noise is particularly troublesome. The greatest intensity of traffic noise is in the old part of the city and noise level caused by city transport is from 65 to 85 dB/A. Among the industrial sources of noise the highest intensity is in the Lenin Steel Plant, Leg Electrothermal Plant, and Solway Soda Works. Vibration and ionizing radiation resulting from the industrial activities are a considerable risk for human health in the Cracow area. The building materials in con

Heart rate reactivity as a predictor of neuroendocrine responses to aversive and appetitive challenges.

The present paper examines the neuroendocrine influences of aversive and reward incentives (noise and shock versus monetary bonuses) presented during reaction time tasks administered to 71 healthy men (ages 21 to 35) classified as being high (N = 30) or low (N = 41) in heart rate reactivity. High heart rate reactivity was defined as a peak heart rate increase or greater than 19 bpm to a cold pressor test administered on a different day. Independent groups of subjects worked on one of two visual reaction time tasks: either to avoid exposure to noise (115-dBA bursts) and shock (3.5 mV, 2 sec), o

Sequence of exposure to noise and toluene can determine loss of auditory sensitivity in the rat.

Rats were exposed to noise (100 dB Leq, 10 h/d, 7 d/w, 4 w), or to toluene (1,000 ppm, 16 h/d, 7 d/w, 2 w), or to noise followed by toluene. Auditory sensitivity was tested before exposure, and 1 to 4 weeks after exposure, by brainstem audiometry using a 1/3-octave filtered sine wave stimulus at the frequencies 1.6, 3.15, 6.3, 12.5 and 20.0 kHz. Some auditory impairment was observed after all exposures. The sensitivity loss after exposure to noise followed by toluene was greater than that recorded after exposure to noise alone or toluene alone, but did not exceed the summated loss caused by no

Noise-induced hearing loss and blood pressure.

The study was carried out on 85 workers with long-term exposure to noise levels exceeding 85 dB(A). The control group consisted of 85 workers who had never been exposed to noise levels greater than recommended, i.e. 85 dB(A), in their working environment. All the workers in the exposed group had hearing loss which was confirmed by audiometry. The Mann-Whitney test was used for statistical assessment. The systolic as well as the diastolic blood pressure in the exposed group was increased (P less than 0.001), respectively (P less than 0.01).

Psychological stress of exposure to uncontrollable noise increases plasma oxytocin in high emotionality women.

Oxytocin (OT), arginine-vasopressin (AVP), memory, and mood changes were measured in relation to the psychological stress of exposure to uncontrollable noise (UN), with the physical stress of exposure to the identical, but controllable, noise (CN) as a comparison. Four experiments were performed. In the first, UN but not CN resulted in OT increases in women but not in men; neither treatment altered plasma AVP. No significant changes were detected in the second study, but in the third women again showed an OT response to UN. In both the first and third study the OT response was found in only a

The extra-auditory effects of noise and annoyance: an overview of research.

This paper is an overview of research on the extra-auditory effects of exposure to noise. The aim is to demonstrate the pervasiveness of the effects in support of noise reduction at the source for reasons that go well beyond hearing conservation. The areas discussed are performance effects, including vigilance, selective attention, sensory-motor behavior and memory; physical effects, including cardiovascular disease and sleep-related disorders, and annoyance, with special reference to psychological outcomes. The results show that high levels of noise are particularly disruptive for dual-task p

[Effects of submarine engine room steady noise on the compound action potential tuning curves and its relation to cochlear pathology in guinea pigs].

Compound Action Potential Tuning Curves (CAP-TC) for tone pip of 2k, 4 kHz were examined in 8 guinea pigs before and after exposure to noise with main energy centered in the range of 0.25-4.0 kHz. CAP-TC was measured with the pure tone simultaneous masking profiles. AP was evoked by tone pip with an intensity of 10 dB above threshold. Masker level producing 40% reduction in AP amplitude was used. Relations between changes in CAP-TC and AP threshold shifts and the pathology of the stereocilia of hair cells were evaluated by surface preparation and SEM observation in 13 ears. Hair cell and supporting cell response to acoustic trauma in the chick cochlea.

Damage to the chick cochlea in response to progressively increased periods of noise exposure was studied with scanning electron microscopy. Ten day-old chick hatchlings were exposed to a 1500 Hz pure tone at 120 dB SPL for 4, 8, 12, 24, and 48 h. Measurements of hair cell and supporting cell surface areas within a defined region of the cochlea showed that the average hair cell surface area decreased over the first 12 h of exposure. Between 12 h and 48 h there was no significant change in hair cell surface area. Supporting cells showed a corresponding increase in surface area over the same peri

Intermediate filaments in the inner ear of normal and experimentally damaged guinea pigs.

The hypothesis that proteins known to occur in glial cells in the central nervous system may be present in inner-ear supporting cells was investigated. Immunocytochemical techniques were used to look for the existence of two classes of intermediate filaments, vimentin and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), in cellular elements of the inner-ear epithelium in normal and experimentally damaged guinea-pig cochleas. Vimentin is present in two types of supporting cells in the normal organ of Corti: Deiters' cells and inner pillar cells. Differences in intensity and distribution of vimentin immu

[Agreement between auditory threshold calculated from cortical evoked response audiometry and tone audiometry in occupational hearing loss].

In a group of 126 men the authors evaluated the auditory threshold from cortical ERA findings and comparison with their threshold sound audiometry. The mean age of the patients means = 52.5 years (min. = 25 years, max. = 69 years, s = 8.95). Noise exposure means = 16.5 years (min. = 4 years, max. = 30 years, s = 4.5). In 79.3% the men worked as miners in uranium mines, other mining occupations were represented only by small numbers. The arithmetic mean of the total percentage hearing loss (calculated according to Fowler) means = 49.7% (min. = 17%, max. = 100%, s = 15). The cumulative frequency

Sustained peripheral vasoconstriction while working in continuous intense noise.

The study examined the effects of exposure to continuous noise on pulse volume (vasoconstriction) and rate, as well as four-choice serial reaction time. There were 2 separate groups of 12 subjects that performed the 20-min task during simultaneous monitoring of their physiological response to continuous 93 dBA white noise or 70 dBA quiet control conditions. Pulse volume showed marked reduction, implying increased arousal, in the first 3-min exposure to noise. Although some habituation of the vasoconstriction response then occurred, pulse volume continued to remain significantly higher than in

Head injury in the workplace.

Work related head injuries do not occur frequently in comparison to other injuries, but their importance lies in their relative severity, both in terms of work days lost and long term morbidity, making it important for the occupational health nurse to have knowledge of how to deal with the initial injury and residual problems. In head injury, most of the treatment is aimed toward prevention of hypoxia, airway obstruction, hypercapnia, hypotension, and bleeding. The Glasgow Coma Scale is used for the severely head injured person. The residual cognitive impairment, emotional disturbances, and be

[Changes in the mouth mucosa during local UHF-hyperthermia and radiotherapy of malignant tumors of the maxillofacial region].

Morphological investigations under experimental conditions have demonstrated that local UHF-hyperthermia at 42-43 degrees C for 30 min does not cause alterative changes of the oral mucosa in animals. The revealed signs of activization of metabolic processes can probably increase radiosensitivity of tumors and their reparation. A favorable course of radiation mucositis was noted after experimental local hyperthermia and irradiation. Morphological changes of the oral mucosa, determined mainly by exposure to radiation, are characterized in the early period by alternative and dystrophic changes, a
