Exploring Effects of Household Air Pollution on Pregnant Mothers and Their Offspring in Africa: A Scoping Review.

In recent decades, air pollution has been the cause of major mortality and morbidity worldwide. WHO attributes about 4.2 million of these to ambient pollution and 3.2 million to household sources. Pregnant women are no exception to those mortalities. Therefore, this review aims to explore and critique existing evidence on the implications of household air pollution in homes among pregnant women. In this review, we adhered to the 2018 PRISMA Scoping Review guidelines. We followed the iterative steps. The time horizon of the literature was 2014-2024. The literature search was conducted on databa

Impact of prenatal exposure to airborne particulate matter on local functional connections in the cerebral cortex of neonates.

Neuroimaging studies suggest that air pollution exposure interferes with brain functional development, potentially affecting long-term cognitive abilities. Early life may represent a critical window of vulnerability, yet most research has assessed exposure effects later in childhood, when postnatal influences accumulate. This study examined the early impact of prenatal exposure to airborne particulate matter (PM2.5) on the functional structure of local connections in the cerebral cortex of neonates. This population-based study was conducted in Barcelona between 2018 and 2021. PM₂.₅ exposure wa

Long-term exposure to air pollution and risk of adult-onset asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: Danish nationwide cohort study.

RATIONALE: Long-term exposure to air pollution contributes to chronic respiratory diseases, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). While the effect of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) are supported by evidence, the contribution of black carbon (bc), a combustion-related pollutant, remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To investigate associations of long-term exposure to bc as well as PM2.5 and NO2 with incidence of adult-onset asthma and COPD in Denmark. METHODS: We followed 3.2 million Danish residents aged 30 years or older on January 1, 2000 un

Prediction of premature rupture of fetal membranes using deep learning in East China.

If premature rupture of fetal membranes (PROM) can be forecasted, doctors can formulate individualized medical treatment plans and optimize the utilization efficiency of unevenly distributed medical resources in China to lower the odds of PROM, preterm birth, and neonatal mortality. We collected the medical records of 20,392 dyads of mothers and term-birth neonates who had received prenatal care services from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2019 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, East China. According to participants' home and working addresses, maternal exposure to air pollution and meteorologic

Quantifying personal exposure to traffic and household air pollution: a pilot study among street traders in Lagos, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Ambient and household air pollution (HAP) exposure is associated with adverse health outcomes. Heavy traffic congestion, street trading, and the use of biomass fuels are common in Lagos, Nigeria. We designed this study to evaluate the feasibility of measuring prolonged personal exposure to air pollution among street traders. We aimed to quantify average 24-hour exposure to air pollution and evaluate how proximity to major highways influences these levels. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study assessing recruitment and level of personal exposure to traffic-related air pollu

Long-Term Exposure to Ambient Air Pollution and Prevalence of Infertility.

Infertility affects 15% of reproductive-age people worldwide and continues to impose a significant health burden. Several recent studies have linked ambient air pollution to infertility, but the evidence remains limited and inconclusive. We obtained global data on prevalence of infertility for 534 global spatial units and high-resolution air pollutants from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study during 2005-2020. Using a difference-in-differences approach, we estimated that each 10 μg/m3 increase of exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) was significantly associated with

Non-negligible disparities in source-specific ambient PM2.5 across economic groups over space and time in China.

Inequality in exposure to air pollution is widespread within countries. Previous studies in the United States have explored the source contributions to exposure disparities, revealing the primary emissions that disproportionately affect minorities. However, the magnitude of exposure disparities stratified by source contributions remains unclear among economic groups in China over space and time. It's essential to examine whether mitigating air pollution from specific sources can yield improved exposure equality among populations. Here, we estimate the source contributions to ambient fine parti

Prenatal air pollution exposure is associated with altered neurodevelopmental outcomes in early childhood.

Prenatal air pollution exposure is associated with altered neurodevelopmental outcomes in childhood. It is unknown whether specific infant characteristics or prenatal exposure windows influence the relationship between prenatal exposure and neurodevelopmental outcomes. We studied 498 (262 male) toddlers born at 23+6-43+4 gestational weeks (125 born <37+0 weeks) who were recruited to the developing human connectome project. We characterised the association between average prenatal exposure to particulate matter [PM2.5 and PM10] and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) across gestation in each trimester model

Short-term exposure to outdoor air pollution significantly associated with severity of acute ischaemic stroke: evidence from the 4S registry.

BACKGROUND: While associations between exposure to air pollution and the prevalence of acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) have been investigated, only a few studies have reported the relationship between air pollution and stroke severity. This study aimed to assess the impact of air pollution on AIS severity based on hourly monitoring data and a stroke-specific registry from 2017 to 2021 in Shanghai. METHODS: Hourly concentrations of particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), O3, SO2, CO and NO2 were monitored from 2017 to 2021. A conditional logistic regression model and a Quasi-Poisson model, both coup

Prenatal exposure to ambient air pollution and risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in offspring: A nationwide population-based cohort study - A commentary on Oh and Song 2026.

This commentary examines how prenatal exposure to ambient air pollution may contribute to the aetiology of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). Experimental work demonstrates that gestational exposure to air pollution and micro- and nanoplastics can induce neuroinflammation, synaptic disruption and autism- or attention-related phenotypes in rodents, supporting biological plausibility for pollutant-related NDD risk. Large-scale epidemiological studies have begun to link prenatal traffic-related pollutants with cognitive delay, behavioural difficulties and increased risk of ASD and ADHD, althoug

Global patterns of air pollution-attributable neonatal preterm birth mortality rates: a machine learning analysis using LSTM autoencoder and K-means clustering.

Neonatal preterm birth is a leading cause of neonatal mortality worldwide, and maternal exposure to air pollution is increasingly recognized as a contributing factor. Quantifying the global burden of deaths attributable to air pollution is essential for guiding interventions. Using data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study, we examined country-level neonatal preterm birth deaths attributable to air pollution between 1990 and 2023. A Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) autoencoder was employed to capture temporal patterns and anomalies in mortality rates, and K-means clustering (K-means) gro

Pollution to prevention: digital decision support for air pollution and exercise counselling in general practice.

BACKGROUND: Outdoor exercise supports physical, mental, and social wellbeing. However, exposure to air pollution during activity can increase cardiorespiratory risk. The Royal College of Physicians (A Breath of Fresh Air, 2025) urges clinicians to address environmental determinants of health, including air quality, during routine care, including annual checks. Patients increasingly use digital tools providing air-quality data and actionable behavioural recommendations, yet the quality, evidence base, and integration of these tools into clinical workflows remain unclear. AIM: To evaluate digit

Biological aging as a mediator of the association between air pollution and all-cause mortality and hospitalization: Evidence from the UK Biobank and Lifelines cohorts.

Air pollution is a major environmental risk factor for premature mortality and hospitalization, yet the biological pathways linking pollution exposure to disease and mortality remain incompletely understood. We investigated whether biological aging mediates the effects of long-term air pollution exposure on mortality and hospitalizations using data from the UK Biobank (n = 309,467; aged 37-73 years) and the Lifelines (n = 29,146; aged 18-93 years). Long-term residential exposures to PM₂.₅, PM₁₀, and NO₂ were estimated using land-use regression and dispersion models. Biological aging was quanti

Effect of Household Air Pollution on the Gut Microbiome and Virome of Adult Women Living in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Emerging observational studies suggest that air pollution can influence the gut microbiome. However, this association is often highly confounded by factors, such as diet and poverty. The gut virome may influence respiratory health independent of the gut microbiome. We recently demonstrated in a randomized waitlist-controlled trial (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03351504) that a clean lighting intervention reduced the level of personal exposure to air pollution among adult women in rural Uganda. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of a solar lighting intervention on changes to the gut micro

Biopsychosocial risk factors for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias in UK immigrants from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region represents the area of greatest projected growth in instances of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRDs) globally, yet, it remains virtually uncharacterized in health studies of aging and ADRDs. The UK Biobank is one of the largest and well characterized datasets of aging immigrants in the UK, offering an unprecedented opportunity to identify risk factors for ADRDs in individuals from MENA regions. Here we used the UK Biobank to compare sociodemographic, disease, lifestyle, genetic, and neuroimaging risk factors for ADRDs among UK immigr
