Modeling Patterns of Population Exposure With a Multiscale Framework Utilizing LOTOS-EUROS Chemical Transport Model, Mobility Surveys and Particulate Toxicity.

The present study proposes a high-resolution, multi-component framework to estimate human exposure to air pollution in tropical urban environments, addressing complex topography and limited historical mobility and exposure data. This framework is applied to the city of Medellín in the Aburrá Valley in Colombia. To assess population exposure to particulate matter, numerical simulations, mobility and toxicity data were integrated. The LOTOS-EUROS Chemical Transport Model, driven by the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, was used to simulate air quality at a spatial resolution of 1 km

Diesel Exhaust Particles Remodel Lipid Raft-Associated Molecular Features Potentially Relevant to SARS-CoV-2 Susceptibility in A549 Cells.

The overlap between the geographic distribution of COVID-19 outbreaks and pollution levels suggested a strong correlation between exposure to atmospheric particulate matter and an increased risk of developing severe forms of disease. This correlation has been highlighted by several epidemiological studies, indicating the existence of shared molecular mechanisms. Emerging evidence has highlighted the important role of lipid rafts in facilitating viral entry into cells. Specifically, the receptor binding domain of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein interacts with sialylated glycans of the monosialic g

Association between long-term exposure to air pollution and blood pressure in children: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Ambient air pollution is a modifiable environmental exposure that may contribute to early cardiovascular risk. Although long-term exposure has been linked to blood pressure (BP) dysregulation, research on its effects in children remains limited, despite their particular vulnerability during critical periods of cardiovascular development. This updated systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to estimate pollutant-specific associations of long-term air pollution exposure with BP and hypertension in children and adolescents. CONTENT: Following PRISMA guidelines, studies were ident

Associations of long-term exposure to multiple air pollutants with chronic pain among middle-aged and older adults: A retrospective cohort study in China.

Long-term exposure to air pollution is a significant public health concern, yet its association with chronic pain remains underexplored, particularly regarding the combined effects of multiple pollutants. This retrospective cohort study investigated the link between long-term exposure to five air pollutants (PM₂.₅, PM₁₀, NO₂, SO₂, CO) and the incidence of chronic pain among middle-aged and older adults in China. Utilizing data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study from 2011 to 2020, this study included 10,378 participants free of chronic pain at baseline. Individual pollutant

Residential indoor air monitoring to assess long-term exposure to air pollution in susceptible populations for epidemiology: overview and early findings.

While there has been accumulating evidence of the association between long-term exposure to air pollution and various health endpoints, most epidemiological studies relied on ambient air pollution which showed substantial deviation from indoor. This difference could lead to biased or imprecise health effect estimates, particularly for susceptible populations who spend most time indoors. Although a few studies focused on indoor air pollution, most monitoring was limited to one-time and/or relatively short-term periods. We aimed to provide an overview of an indoor monitoring campaign that was de

The Effect of Synbiotic Supplementation on Malondialdehyde Levels in Adolescents Exposed to Air Pollution: A Randomized, Single-Blind, Controlled Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to air pollution has been linked to elevated malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, a marker of oxidative stress, while synbiotics-by modulating the intestinal microbiota-may reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. Despite these possibilities, evidence on the effect of synbiotic supplementation in mitigating oxidative stress caused by air pollution in pediatric populations remains limited. METHODS: This single-blind randomized controlled trial aimed to assess the impact of synbiotic supplementation on MDA levels among 70 healthy children and adolescents aged 10-18 years exposed

Maternal sensitivity and child behavior problems in the context of intimate partner violence.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is defined as physical, sexual, or psychological violence perpetrated by a romantic partner. When IPV occurs prenatally, it can affect the developing stress regulatory system of the fetus and confer risk for later behavior problems. Postnatal exposure to IPV is also linked to greater behavior problems in children, potentially due to the way that high-stress home environments can interfere with the development of self-regulation. Maternal sensitivity, on the other hand, is an important parenting factor that promotes children's adaptive self-regulation. The presen

Different Effects of Antioxidants Against Ionizing Radiation: An Experimental Model of Micronuclei.

There is an urgent need to find and develop radiation countermeasures for both planned and unplanned exposures. However, in recent years, radioprotective substances, such as rosmarinic acid (RA), have been described, presenting contradictory and even paradoxical results. In this paper, we evaluated the genoprotective capacity of 29 substances against chromosomal damage induced by gamma radiation in a comparative study using the same technique, i.e., cytokinesis-block micronucleus (CBMN) assay to evaluate their genoprotective capacities, at the same concentrations and administered before and af
