The Association of G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor (GPER) Polymorphisms with Ionizing Radiation Exposure in Healthcare Workers.

Background/Objectives: The G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) is known to interact with cellular stress responses and DNA damage pathways. Therefore, exposure to ionizing radiation may modulate the biological consequences of single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the GPR30 gene. This study aims to evaluate the association between GPER polymorphisms and radiation sensitivity. Methods: The study included 50 healthcare workers exposed to ionizing radiation and 36 healthy individuals with no known occupational exposure to radiation. Genomic DNA was isolated and PCR products were purified using

Suggested Approaches on Communicating to the Public Implications of the Linear No-Threshold (LNT) Dose Response Model and the Fallacy That "There Are No Safe Levels of Radiation Exposure".

The linear no-threshold dose response model (LNT) is used to estimate health effects due to exposure to ionizing radiation. It has been used extensively by US regulatory agencies for many decades to establish radiation exposure limits and to estimate future health (primarily cancer) effects for both projected (e.g., for a proposed nuclear facility or activity) and previous radiation exposures. The model assumes a linear relationship between dose and health effects, even for very low doses within the range of natural background radiation, where biological effects may be difficult or impossible

Radiation-induced alterations in the cancer microenvironment (Review).

Radiation therapy is routinely used for the treatment of cancer; however, the development of radiation resistance in some tumor cells can lead to poor efficacy. Cancer cells can alter their metabolic status following exposure to radiation to reduce radiation-induced cytotoxicity, ultimately enabling them to survive radiation injury and adapt to the changed environment. It has been indicated that these metabolic changes in cancer cells affect the cancer microenvironment, and certain metabolite changes within the microenvironment may, in turn, promote cancer cell proliferation. Therefore, combin

Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts Promote Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition and Classical to Basal Subtype Shift in Pancreatic Cancer.

Environmental exposures represent a significant health hazard, which cumulatively may be responsible for up to 2/3 of all chronic non-communicable disease and associated mortality (Global Burden of Disease Study and The Lancet Commission on Pollution and Health), which has given rise to a new concept of the exposome: the sum of environmental factors in every individual's experience. Noise is part of the exposome and is increasingly being investigated as a health risk factor impacting neurological, cardiometabolic, endocrine, and immune health. Association between noise pollution exposure and incident breast cancer in the Sister Study.

Noise exposure may contribute to cancer risk via disrupting sleep patterns and the autonomic nervous system. While modest positive associations between noise exposure and breast cancer incidence were observed in Europe, no study has been done in the United States. We examined the association between noise exposure and incident breast cancer in a large nationwide prospective cohort of women in the U.S. We included 46,809 participants in the Sister Study (ages 35-74, enrolled 2003-2009). Median daytime and nighttime anthropogenic noise at the participants' baseline residence was estimated using

Evaluation of the relationship between noise exposure and arterial blood pressure and lipid profile disorders in wood industry workers: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Exposure to noise elevates stress hormones and alters metabolism, raising cholesterol and triglyceride levels, thereby increasing cardiovascular risk. This study investigates the link between occupational noise, blood pressure, and lipid profiles in wood industry workers. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 249 male employees with at least one year of full-time employment in the wood industry. Participants were categorized into two groups: 166 workers exposed to noise levels exceeding 85 decibels (dB) (case) and 83 workers exposed to lower noise levels (control). Personal d

Exposure to Occupational Risks and Labour Productivity in Africa: An Empirical Investigation From 1992 to 2021.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to occupational risks constitutes one of the major public health concerns in the world. Nonetheless, very little attention has been paid towards improving safety in the workplace by employers, probably because, the direct losses associated with occupational risks (including reduction in labour productivity) are not widely known, especially across African countries. This study therefore sets out to investigate the association between occupational risks and labour productivity across African countries. METHODS: The study uses secondary data on 42 countries in Africa over th

Environmental noise exposure in schools in São Paulo, Brazil: potential noise sources and health impacts among teachers.

Noise is an important environmental and occupational health risk factor linked to sustainable development. Schools are key environments where teachers may face harmful noise exposure, yet data from low- and middle-income countries remain limited. This study assessed school noise levels and related health impacts among teachers in western São Paulo. Using a short-term repeated-measures design, daily noise measurements were conducted over one school week in seven schools, complemented by cross-sectional multilevel analyses of teacher-reported outcomes. Continuous environmental noise data were co

Development intensity and incident stroke risk: a longitudinal study of the REGARDS cohort.

Stroke risk may be affected by the level of development in a neighborhood, which may in turn affect access to health-promoting environmental features, or exposure to noise and air pollution. This study investigated development intensity as a potential influence on stroke risk, using data from the United States Geological Survey National Land Cover Database (NLCD). We tested associations between development intensity and incident stroke among 25,330 adult participants in the REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke study. We measured development intensity in 8-km network buffers

Investigating the combined effect of artificial light at night and noise on educational achievements of schoolchildren.

Surrounded by artificial light and noise at night, schoolchildren do not sleep well and wake up tired in the morning, which can adversely affect their school grades. In this study, we verify this hypothesis by measuring nighttime light and noise in schoolchildren's bedrooms and comparing these measurements with educational achievements in various study subjects. During the six-week study, schoolchildren used the AndroSensor smartphone app to monitor illumination and noise and the ZeppLife app to monitor sleep. The measurements were compared to the grades obtained during the corresponding schoo

Noise exposure patterns and health risk assessment among nurses in a Chinese paediatric intensive care unit.

Starting from the hypothesis that occupational noise exposure among paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) nurses at our hospital exceeds the recommended health guidelines and is associated with adverse non-auditory health outcomes, the aim of this cross-sectional study was to quantify personal noise exposure patterns and assess correlations with perceived stress, sleep quality, and hearing handicap in a convenience sample of 60 registered nurses wearing personal noise dosimeters over a 12-hour shift. The participants also completed a survey including the 10-item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10)

Effects of noise exposure and long working hours on oxidative stress levels and high-frequency hearing threshold damage in occupational populations.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational noise-induced hearing loss remains a significant public health concern in China. This study aimed to investigate the associations between combined exposure to occupational noise and long working hours with oxidative stress levels and high-frequency hearing loss (HFHL) in an occupational population. METHODS: A total of 547 Chinese workers from eight manufacturing enterprises in Guangzhou who were engaged in noise-exposed occupations were recruited. Participants were divided into a noise exposure group (weekly working hours ≤40 h, n = 332) and a combined exposure grou

Combined exposure to noise and ototoxic solvents: contributions to the revision of legal limits based on the literature.

Work-related hearing loss resulting from combined exposure to noise and ototoxic solvents remains underestimated in occupational prevention practices. Substances such as toluene, xylene, and styrene, which are widely present in industrial environments, potentiate auditory damage even at levels below the tolerance limits considered safe. By conditioning the implementation of the Hearing Conservation Program solely on the action level for isolated noise exposure, Brazilian legislation proves insufficient in addressing the complexity of contemporary occupational risks. This opinion article propos

Cardiovascular composite events and the healthy worker effect among noise-exposed workers: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Occupational noise exposure is prevalent, but its cardiovascular effects are under recognized. Most studies are cross-sectional, focus on single endpoints, and rarely account for the healthy worker effect (HWE). This study aimed to identify risk factors for cardiovascular composite events in noise-exposed workers and further assess this effect. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study enrolled 1,381 noise-exposed workers with normal blood pressure and normal electrocardiogram at baseline in 2020. All participants were followed annually through 2023. The primary endpoint was a comp

Occupational exposure to noise and depression incidence: a nationwide cohort study of workers in Denmark, 2000-2017.

OBJECTIVES: Research on the association between occupational noise and incident depression is limited. We investigated whether long-term occupational noise was associated with depression risk, both independently and in combination with other stress-related factors. METHODS: In a Danish nationwide register-based cohort of 2 424 542 workers aged 25-64 years, individual-level occupational histories were linked to noise exposure using a job exposure matrix. Noise exposure was aggregated as 5-year running means. During follow-up from 2000 to 2017, 142 370 women and 119 900 men developed incident d

Reproductive potential in a wild boar population exposed for multiple generations to chronic low-dose radiation in Fukushima, Japan.

Releases of anthropogenic radionuclides can cause acute and long-term effects to organisms, reducing survival and recruitment and potentially leading to population-level and ecosystem-wide consequences. Acute radiotoxicity is known to induce oxidative stress, DNA damage, immunosuppression, and reproductive failure. Human biomedical studies of acute radiation exposure have demonstrated severe reproductive consequences including ovarian toxicity, sterilization, and premature reproductive senescence. Yet, little is known about the reproductive effects of chronic exposure to low-dose rates of ioni

Uncharted territory - an audiometric surveillance program for seafarers.

BACKGROUND: Occupational noise exposure causes noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). The International Maritime Organization Code on Noise Levels on Board Ships includes audiometric surveillance as an optional measure for monitoring auditory thresholds over time. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standard threshold shift (STS) criterion is widely used for surveillance. A standard threshold shift can occur due to aging, illness, cumulative exposure to noise and ototoxic agents, or test-retest variability. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first service implementation an

Extrapolating personal exposure measurements to air pollution from outdoor sources into annual mean estimates.

A persistent disconnect exists between epidemiological studies emphasising long-term health effects and exposure assessments relying on short-term measurements, as well as between health responses linked to outdoor (ambient) concentrations versus translation of that to indoor or personal environments. To fill these gaps, we developed an extrapolation method to estimate annual personal exposure to air pollutants from outdoor sources, including fine particles, nitrogen dioxide, ozone and black carbon, using measurements from personal exposure campaigns. The methodology accounts for (a) hourly va
