Occupation and 20-year hearing decline: findings from The HUNT Study.

BACKGROUND: Studies show that certain occupations are associated with an increased risk of hearing loss. However, many studies are cross-sectional, and the few longitudinal studies are mostly small or focus on only one occupation. AIMS: We aimed to quantify the long-term hearing decline among workers in different occupations and assess whether the change differs between the occupations. METHODS: The study population was 4525 adults who participated in two population-based health studies in Norway, HUNT2 1996-1998 and HUNT4 2017-2019. Linear regression models assessed the association between

Hair cortisol as a viable tool for the assessment of an association between environmental noise exposure and chronic stress.

Entrenched in the well-established link between stress and health, noise exposure as a potential contributor to stress-related health effects receives tremendous attention. Indeed, exposure to noise can act as a stressor as evidenced through increased heart rate, blood pressure, adrenaline, epinephrine, and cortisol. Cortisol is secreted from the adrenal glands in response to stressor-induced activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. For assessment of environmental noise and stress, repeated sampling in blood, saliva, or urine is necessary to evaluate the association between envir

The association of noise exposure with stroke incidence and mortality: A systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of cohort studies.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Noise exposure is a major public health challenge with important implications for cardiovascular health. However, the association between noise exposure and stroke risk remains controversial. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the role of noise exposure on stroke incidence and mortality by conducting a dose-response meta-analysis of cohort studies. METHODS: The relevant publications were retrieved via PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus up to June 26, 2022. The potential linear and curve relationship between noise and stroke were fitted using the generalized least squ

Airborne Sound Power Levels and Spectra of Noise Sources in Port Areas.

Airborne port noise has historically suffered from a lack of regulatory assessment compared to other transport infrastructures. This has led to several complaints from citizens living in the urban areas surrounding ports, which is a very common situation, especially in countries facing the Mediterranean sea. Only in relatively recent years has an effort been made to improve this situation, which has resulted in a call for and financing of numerous international cooperation research projects, within the framework of programs such as EU FP7, H2020, ENPI-CBC MED, LIFE, and INTERREG. These project

Increased Signs of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in Dental Students: A Multilevel Approach.

CONTEXT: Despite the fact that the new generations of rotary tools emit less noise, some recent studies suggest that dental students are still at risk of hearing impairment. AIMS: The aim of the study was to determine a possible association between noise exposure from dental equipment and early signs of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in dental students. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was carried out with dental and non-dental students from two universities in Chile. METHODS AND MATERIAL: A group of 102 dental students routinely exposed to noise emitted from dental equipment

Telehealth solutions for assessing auditory outcomes related to noise and ototoxic exposures in clinic and research.

Nearly 1.5 billion people globally have some decline in hearing ability throughout their lifetime. Many causes for hearing loss are preventable, such as that from exposure to noise and chemicals. According to the World Health Organization, nearly 50% of individuals 12-25 years old are at risk of hearing loss due to recreational noise exposure. In the occupational setting, an estimated 16% of disabling hearing loss is related to occupational noise exposure, highest in developing countries. Ototoxicity is another cause of acquired hearing loss. Audiologic assessment is essential for monitoring h

MicroRNA expression is associated with auditory dysfunction in workers exposed to ototoxic solvents and noise.

This study is part of a project on early hearing dysfunction induced by combined exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and noise in occupational settings. In a previous study, 56 microRNAs were found differentially expressed in exposed workers compared to controls. Here, we analyze the statistical association of microRNA expression with audiometric hearing level (HL) and distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) level in that subset of differentially expressed microRNAs. The highest negative correlations were found; for HL, with miR-195-5p and miR-122-5p, and, for DPOAEs, with mi

Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in Police Officers: Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is defined as the sensorineural hearing loss caused by acute acoustic trauma or chronic exposure to high-intensity noises. Exposure to noises can lead to irreversible damage to the inner ear and, consequently, to a permanent shift of the hearing threshold. Police officers are particularly at risk of acute or chronic hearing damages. The aim of this study is to evaluate the hearing loss of police officers in relation to the occupational risk factors and clinical-anamnestic characteristics by collecting and analyzing existing data and evidence avai

Relationship Between Occupational Noise and Hypertension in Modern Enterprise Workers: A Case-Control Study.

Objective: The association between occupational noise exposure and hypertension is controversial. Thus, we aimed to assess the relationship between occupational noise exposure and hypertension. Methods: This was a case‒control study, and 509 cases and 1,018 controls from an automobile company were included between July and October 2013. Occupational noise exposure was defined as exposure to noise level ≥80 dB(A) (Lex, 8 h) or cumulative noise exposure (CNE) ≥ 80 dB(A)-years. To assess the associations of noise level and CNE with hypertension, univariate and multivariate logistic regression wer

The roles of NADPH and isocitrate dehydrogenase in cochlear mitochondrial antioxidant defense and aging.

Hearing loss is the third most prevalent chronic health condition affecting older adults. Age-related hearing loss affects one in three adults over 65 years of age and is caused by both extrinsic and intrinsic factors, including genetics, aging, and exposure to noise and toxins. All cells possess antioxidant defense systems that play an important role in protecting cells against these factors. Reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) serves as a co-factor for antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione reductase and thioredoxin reductase and is produced by glucose-6-phosphate de

The association of road traffic noise with cognition in adolescents: A cohort study in Switzerland.

Environmental noise exposure has been shown to affect children's cognition, but the concept of cognition is multifaceted, and studies on associations with noise are still inconclusive and fragmented. We studied cognitive change within one year in 882 adolescents aged 10-17 years in response to road traffic noise exposure. Participants filled in a comprehensive questionnaire and underwent cognitive testing twice at an interval of one year. Figural and verbal memory was measured with the Intelligenz-Struktur-Test (IST), and concentration accuracy and constancy were measured with FAKT-II and d2 t
